After a dismal beginning, Coach Stephenson ' s 1971-72 football squad gained a measure of respectability through a fantastic finish. Led by running back Dwight Fulce, the Lions finished strong with a streak of four undefeated games. Fulce and his fellow seniors provided much of the leadership to mold the under- class-dominated squad into a com- petitive group. The season was clearly a building season, and Coach Stephenson kept no secret of the fact. Sophomores and juniors saw much action in several key positions. It was an inspired, young squad which fought a heavily-favored Washington team and gave La Salle ' s coaching staff its greatest thrill through victory. Reaping few rewards from this sea- son ' s efforts, the tennis squad looks forward to a fruitful season next year. Among the returning veterans are Jim Myers, M.V.P. Pat Gorbitz, Terry Adamo, Steve Dono- von, and Jerry Fisher. An excellent coach draws a crowd of players seeking his wisdom The 1971-72 basketball team repre- sented La Salle in the finest style. A spirited nucleus of seniors overcame height advantages by many oppo- nents with their constant hustling and endless energy. Among the great achievements of the team was La Salle ' s first Holiday Tourney championship. Also, Coach Leonakis ' team reached the fourth position in the state ranking. As compared with last year ' s team of superstars, this year ' s squad put together a formi- dable team attack. Often six players scored over ten points, with each of the starting six leading the team in scoring on different occasions. A key moment in the season was reached in a one-point loss to Mich- igan City in a see-saw battle. The loss to city rival St. Joseph ' s caused LaSalle to finish second in the NI VC. 52 Holiday Tourney Abm-e Left: Bob Warren releases his free throw. I i r fi 59 9-1 Season Proves Best Ever The 1971-72 season was rewarding for the La Salle Wrestling team: had it not been for a one point loss to Niles, Coach Vargo ' s squad would have fashioned a perfect 10-0 season. The resulting 9-1 record and team championships in the NIVC and sec- tional tournaments marked this wrestling squad as the best in La- Salle ' s history. Six wrestlers repre- sented LaSalle at the regional wres- tling meet with Bernie Hill and John Powell emerging as individual cham- pions. In the state finals, Bernie Hill placed second, suffering his only de- feat of the year at the hands of the state champion from Kokomo. The mighty blend of seniors, juniors, and sophomores promises LaSalle a strong team for the next years. Peace, you guys. 1971 Varsity and B-Team wrestling squads: First Row; M. Smorin, B. Bratton, D. LaSalle ' s Premier Hockey Team pro- vided the student body with another form of athletic representation. Fea- turing enthusiasm and a fighting spirit, the 1971-72 squad gained valuable experience in team play. Maximum eiforts were not enough, however, as tough and efficient foes skated past the icemen with alarm- ing regularity. Skaters set up for power play action. Hockey Team: Front Row: R. Rains, M. He gazed forlornly at the Heeing hordes of 3:00. Then he en- tered the tiny, windowless Yearbook Office. He was alone with a lay-out sheet, a grease pencil, and decrepit typewriter. He sat in the stillness and racked his brain, but the brilliant ideas wouldn ' t come. The deadline was al- most here .... If the yearbook is a failure .... the kids will say .... He stared at the drawing of the vol- uptous mushroom for inspiration. Nothing. The faces in the pictures before him leered at his panic. address for three stores that pride themselves in personal service. Martin ' s Super Market is one of few who have been able to combine m od- em efficiency with old-fashioned service. Martin ' s is open daily from 9 to 9 and Saturdays from 8 to 8. Huff ' s Pharmacy, next door, per- forms a valuable service to the com- munity. Besides the usual items such as medicine and cosmetics, they handle emergency products like cards for the last minute, almost for- gotten birthday, or holiday. The Ben Franklin Store, the third member of our friendly trio, is one of two servicing the northwest part of town. They have something to fill everyone ' s needs. Their service is friendly and their help convenient. ISO To Lay the Foundation and Paper Pf. -% the Walls I I Kuert leads the Industrial Park on Lincolnway West. No job is too small for Kuert Concrete. Every five-year old needs sand for that sand box in the back yard. Sand, along with gravel and ready-mixed concrete, may be purchased quickly through this faithful LaSalle supporter. The Industrial Park contains many LaSalle boosters and sponsors. On Bendix Drive Weyerhauser is the leader. Paper has become increas- ingly important with our advance- ments. This is what Weyerhauser is all about-paper. 181 For Times of Gaiety, Sorrow, or Solemnity For watches, rings, or other pieces of fine jewelry. Van Home ' s should be the first stop. The customer always receives personal, unhurried attention. Welsheimer ' s service to the commu- nity is one of the most valuable. Al- though this time is sad for the fam- ily involved, Welsheimer ' s do their best to help them. Peltz ' s music store is located at 416 West LaSalle. To Many of LaSalle ' s students, music plays an important part in their curriculum. Many re- ceive their guidance from Peltz ' s fine instructors. The quality of the musical instruments is backed by Peltz ' s high reputation. 182 To Heat Your Home, Help Your High, or Heal Your Heart ' iillllliihi - With the winters in South Bend, fuel for heat is a necessity. Guarantee Oil fills not only this need but also solves the problem of the extra bills with their special budget plan. One of the largest in the state, The Pink Elephant has the supplies for any party. In the jungle, lions and elephants don ' t always get along. But in South Bend the Pink Ele- phant has a lot of spirit for the suc- cess of the Lions. Flov ers mean many things to many people. Ehninger ' s Florist realizes this individualism. For prom, birth- days, and holidays, let the occasion mean more with flowers from Ehninger ' s. ]83 More Fun at McDonald ' s To catch that special smile or look is the specialty of McDonald Studio. Dis- appointment never happens with the high quality photographs taken by Mr. Patnaude. If you are looking for a special gift, a photograph will be your an- swer. Take a look at the displays in the windows at 201 N. Michigan Street. 184 Let I M Turn You On There ' s always somebody who can ' t grasp a new idea. Fortunately, there are a lot of other people . . . those who get ideas, and those who listen to them and do something ... so that there ' s progress in our world. Like a lot of American businesses, we ' ve built our whole company on new ideas. Like the total-electric home, and the all-electric sch ool, and reducing the cost of our product while everyone else was raising theirs. A lot of our ideas came to us from young people who joined our company, and from others outside, in other industries. But the important thing is what we did with those ideas. And what we hope to do with more to come to us in the future. Business needs ideas. Got any? 185 Balfour Gives the Best Graduation is a special time of achievement for seniors and parents. Remember the occasion with an- nouncements and memory albums from Balfour Company. Balfour han- dles all necessities for graduating seniors. Their jewelry is among the finest. La Salle class rings show indi- vidual taste and personal memories. Class keys are also available to sen- iors. So get it together with Balfour. 186 For Fine Food Fan Belts and Fast Starts TAHDAfO Kreamo, the fresh bread company, brings daily nourishment to La Salle students and to many South Bend homes. Located at 1910 Lincolnway West, it has long been a loyal backer of La Salle activities. Mike Willis and Mark Nye hold a few of the high performance auto parts and accessories seen stored in the large warehouse of The Ridge Company at 1535 S. Main. Ridge has been the favorite place to purchase auto parts in South Bend for over 40 years and is open until 8:00 evenings.
