Z f Ka Wana O Kona 0 1, .,i4,+--+7 ., Old Konawaena HISTORY OF KONAWAENA It is fifteen years since the establishment of the Konawaena High School, in 1921, at which time, Mr. Clyde Crawford was principal, and Miss Bertha Ben Taylor was supervising principal. Prior to this, it was an ele- mentary school of eight grades. Miss Bertha Taylor worked hard to establish this high school, and to her and a few others, we owe our respect. For three consecutive times, she tried to get an appropriation in the legislature, to build this institution, but was refused twice. However, her efforts were not wasted, for during the special session of 1920, the legislature finally appropriated 330,000 for the building of our school, and again in the regular session, the following year, 515,000 was granted. Thus the Konawaena High School was esta- blished, through the efforts of Miss Taylor and Mr. Julian Yates, who was and is supervisor for West Hawaii. Since then, our school has progressed greatly. The enrollment in- creased steadily, and eventually, teachers and new courses were added to meet the demands of the students. Buildings were also added, and the grounds were leveled and improved, for play and beautification, till now, Konavfaena boasts of having one of the most beautiful campuses on the big island. In 1926, a gymnasium was built, again through the efforts of Mr. Ju- lian Yates, and several others, with the public in back of them. This gym- nasium holds a capacity of approximately a thousand, and the floor space is said to be one of the largest on the big island. The gym has made pos- sible numerous activities, such as basketball games, assemblies, dances, and also is available for public use as the May Dav fair and public addresses. Not only did the school progress in sports and beautification of the campus, but also in social functions. The students take active part in de- bate, oratory, organization clubs, and in publications. The first annual was published in 1926, under the editorship of Oliver Yanaga, and through 4135
