It is apparent that a lack of fellowship has been responsible for wars and much distress throughout the course of history. Today as we examine the political problems of the various na- tions, and especially those of Spain, Germany, and China we can see the results of a lack of fellowship. In the mainland United States and in our own Territory the settlement of the various labor crisis of today will depend on our imbuing the conflicting groups with a greater feeling of fellowship. The whole world views Hawaii with admiration because- we have shown that people of many races can live together in a friendly manner. Let us strive to maintain this spirit of friend- liness, and to live up to the maxim of the Colden Rule. ' CHARLES J. GRISWOLD C 8 J . 8 I Deaf 501-QA' as-48, Gaim ww Sf' W. Z f Ka Wana O Kona 0 1, .,i4,+--+7 ., Old Konawaena HISTORY OF KONAWAENA It is fifteen years since the establishment of the Konawaena High School, in 1921, at which time, Mr. Clyde Crawford was principal, and Miss Bertha Ben Taylor was supervising principal. Prior to this, it was an ele- mentary school of eight grades. Miss Bertha Taylor worked hard to establish this high school, and to her and a few others, we owe our respect. For three consecutive times, she tried to get an appropriation in the legislature, to build this institution, but was refused twice. However, her efforts were not wasted, for during the special session of 1920, the legislature finally appropriated 330,000 for the building of our school, and again in the regular session, the following year, 515,000 was granted. Thus the Konawaena High School was esta- blished, through the efforts of Miss Taylor and Mr. Julian Yates, who was and is supervisor for West Hawaii. Since then, our school has progressed greatly. The enrollment in- creased steadily, and eventually, teachers and new courses were added to meet the demands of the students. Buildings were also added, and the grounds were leveled and improved, for play and beautification, till now, Konavfaena boasts of having one of the most beautiful campuses on the big island. In 1926, a gymnasium was built, again through the efforts of Mr. Ju- lian Yates, and several others, with the public in back of them. This gym- nasium holds a capacity of approximately a thousand, and the floor space is said to be one of the largest on the big island. The gym has made pos- sible numerous activities, such as basketball games, assemblies, dances, and also is available for public use as the May Dav fair and public addresses. Not only did the school progress in sports and beautification of the campus, but also in social functions. The students take active part in de- bate, oratory, organization clubs, and in publications. The first annual was published in 1926, under the editorship of Oliver Yanaga, and through 4135 me B-W?-0 Qi fs ,,f--f:i1fif Ka Wena O K0I13lQ'7 Lf-'fl . 1 ' g x - 'sg '-....- ' l' r r - -4 I-,., .4-- 'f' S - s K .s - eff. Present Konawaena - Office Building constant improvements, the Ka Wena O Kona was awarded the Medalist award last year by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The first school paper was put out in 1925, called the Koniwaena News. Though the name is changed, a weekly school paper is published which is mimeograph- ed by the students. The Associated Students of Konawaena High School was first organiz- ed in 1925, and is still carried on to this day. This serves as an experience of self-government for the students and betters the understanding between students and teachers. Its purpose is to help students to become more worth while, to act for the good of others, and to acquire the habits of self-dependence. The cabinet, which is similar to the student council in some schools, consists of the principal, athletic coach, senate adviser, student body pre- sident, and secretary. This organization serves as an executive board for the Associated Students of Konawaena High School Association to ap- point members of the C.P.O. department from a list recommended by the senate, to take up matters of immediate importance concerning student dis- cipline and to maintain regulation in the school. Other organizations in our school are Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of Hawaii, Girl Reserves and Hi-Y. These' clubs stress moral conduct and develop better homemakers and farmers. It also promotes better friendship among girls and boys. Although the P.T.A. is an outside organization, it has done many things to improve conditions in our school. In 1930, a course in orchestra was offered, and now there are more than 75 pupils enrolled in it. To finance this class the school sponsors an operetta every year, which is also put on by the school children. f19l Old lo ?1,y Ka Wena 0 Kona 'QFQXLG . TEACHERS' DIRECTORY 1928 Mr. R. Richmond, M. Since then many chapters have been organized in various districts in the territory so that at present there are nearly 40 chapters. There are two types of Smith-Hughes vocational agricultural classes in the territory. Under type A class, the boys spend about 2 days a week working in the Held and the rest of the week in the classroom. Their field work consists largely of contract work with sugar or pineapple plantations. In addition to field work, the boys carry on one or two home projects such as poultry. swine, vegetable garden, t1'opical fruits. etc. Under type B fsuch as the set up we have in this schoolb, the boys do not do any field work but carry on one or two home projects. They spend 90 minutes daily for instruction in various agricultural enterprises. Many of our local district' boys have made good showings in F.F.A. work. Konawaena boasts of the largest number of Hawaii Planter degree recipients, including Masayuki Nagai, Yasuki Nakagawa, Kumakichi Higa- shihara, Yoshio Ito, Itsuo Shibuya, Yoshiichi Ujimori, Masao Ikeda, Ta- dao Igeta, Haruo Yamamoto, Masao Hada, and Kongo Kimura. Masayuki Nagai had gone further to earn himself an American Farmer degree. Yasuki Nakagawa is trying for a similar degree this year. Both Masayuki and Yasuki have had the honor of attending the F.F.A. National Conven- tion in Kansas City. Their expenses, of course, were covered by the Ter- ritorial Organization. 183i .1 To-veil'-A rw . W . A,,e. g -f' Ka Wann O Kona ,f4rj:.. H Y S E Top row, left to right: Enjoying his meal. ' BOYS' BASKETBALL Captain-Unoji Goto Coach-A. C. Young When the first call for boys' basketball practice was announced on the bulletin board by Coach Young, numerous prospects and all the regulars responded. With such a large number turning out, it was difficult for the coach to shape up a good team. Yet with his whole interest on the team he com- pleted another successful year for Konawaena High School. BIG ISLAND JUNIOR INTER-SCHOLASTIC LEAGUE Jan. 15. Wildcats-39 Honokaas-15 With the intention of defending their Junior Interscholastic Basket-I ball title, the Wildcat Quintet opened its first game of the league by defeat- ing the Honokaa Dragons 39 to 15, before a large enthusiastic crowd at- the school gym. The Konaites made an impressive showing throughout the game to- earn a clean victory. i362 - 5 fi-v-U Q, , . ,,Cf MKa Wena O Kona Q32 f?4,..1.. Jan. 22 Wildcats-55 Kohalas-35 Playing an inspiring ball game, the Wildcats threshed the powerful cowboys of Kohala to the tune of 55-35 on the Kona fioor. Both teams fought very closely and played a head up game. This victory added another step towards the championship cup. Jan. 29 Wildcats-44 Spartans--36 The Wildcat five, flashing well-groomed offensive work in the criti- -cal moments, drowned the fighting Hilo Intermediate's Spartan, 44-36, in an afternoon game. Both teams performed fine defensive and offensive work throughout the entire game but the Spartans were over-powered by the Wildcats in a man to man defense. This marked the third victory for the Wildcats. Feb. 5 Wildcats-15 Honokaas-20 In the return game on Feb. 5, the snarling Wildcats' winning streak was stopped by the Dragons of Honokaa in the latter's out-of-door court. This game marked the first set-back in the Junskol race for the Wildcats. The score was 20-15. Feb. 11 Wildcats-42 Kohalas-41 With the defeat by the Honokaas still on their mind, the revived Wild- cats invaded the Kohala campus on Friday, Feb. 11 for a return match. The Konaites, fighting hard from the opening whistle, were given the worst scare .of their lives when the Cowboys almost lassoed the Wildcats. The final score stood 42 to 41 in Kona's favor. This game marked the 4th victory in the junskol conipetition and also enabled the Wildcats to represent West Hawaii in the annual inter-island basketball tournament in Honolulu. . Feb. 20 Wildcats-31 Spartans-36 The last game of the Junior Inter-scholastic League was played against the Hilo Intermediates at Hilo to decide the championship. The Wildcats, being exhausted after the heated game of the previous night, were unable to perform their very best, thus losing the Big Island Junior Inter-scho- lastic League championship. 4379 O--Wil o i,y Ka Wena O Kona r f S.
