KH5 443 Konawa High School Band The Konawa High School,Band under the direction of Mr. Enix has already achieved much destinction for performances this year, and an attempt will be made to gain a few more honors before school closes. The Band began its season of fine performances with its annual concert on February 3, 1938. A former bandsman, Leon Brown was the soloest of the concert, and Boh Makovsky, head of the music department of A k M College, honored the occasion with his presence. The program included many interesting and varied numbers, new to the listeners. The next formal appearance of the band was in the annual Trl-State Band Festival held at Enid, April 7th, Bth, and 9th. There the band won a superior ranking and first place. The band was also honored by the Band Festival committee's invit- ing them to play in a concert of the outstanding winning organ- izations. Together with the orchestra and soloists, the school placed a very close second to Classen High School of Oklahoma City, for the sweepstakes award. On May 15, the band competed in the District Interschol- astic Contest held at Ada. And once more received a superior and first ranking. April 28, the band goes to the state contest, at Norman, and will try to establish eligibility for the National Contest, to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 19, to 2lat. gi

KH5 k'N 0TOh0Btr8 The forty-two piece orchestra, under the baton of direct- or E. Paul Enix, is just climaxing a successful season. For the first time in the history of the orchestra a standard symphony has been attemtped, 'The Schubert Unfinished Symphony', and it has proved so successful that Mr. Enix intends to pre- sent a similar work each year in order that performers and listeners alike will raise their standards of appreciation of finer music. The orchestra presented it's annual concert on March 12 in the first appearance of a musical group in the new high school auditorium. Included on the prog1am were the selectiions 'Unfinished Symphony' - Schubert, 'Valse Triste,' - Sibelieus, two numbers by the high school instrumental trio, 'Andante' from the Hayden 'Surprise Sym hony' and 'Mozart Suite' Cal Al- legro lb! Andante Tranquillo fel Allegro. On March 23, the orchestra presented 1t's concert in the Ada High School Auditorium for two audiences. The concert was very well received, especially 'Valse Triste' and 'The Sur- prise Symphony'. The following week, April B the orchestra competed in the orchestra division of the Tri-State Festival in Enid, and received a superior ranking in class C. Gnly one other orchestra of the 16 competing groups in the 3 classes received a superior ranking, that being Stillwater in class A. On April 15 the orchestra competed in the district con- test at Ada, where it also received a superior and first place ranking. April 29, will find the orchestra competing in the State Inter-Scholastic contest. String Department Instructor Mrs. Nathan Farb Since the basis for the orchestra is the string section, much of the orchestra's success is due to Mrs. Farb, insturctor for that department. The department includes some thrity-two violins, eight 'cel1os, four violas, and three string basses. The players rank all the way from third graders to Seniors. 'fri , si,-2 I
