KEEP OFF THE GRASS Grass grows by inches ---- and dies by feet, These are the words found on a sign placed in a public park somewhere in these United States. Can anyone question the truth contained in those few words ? It has been said many times how wonderful and mag- nificent is our country. Although it doesn't have as many historic landmarks and buildings as some of the old countries, it possesses a higher standard of living and provides more comfortable living conditions than any other country in the world. C US TODIAN HISTORY OF NELL MCGOWEN JUNIOR HIGH Although we have moved into the former high school building, we will never forget the first Nell McGowen Junior High. The building we left was constructed in 1892 as the Knoxville High School. It remained that until, because of overcrowded conditions, a. new high school was dedicated in 1917. The former high school building then became the first Knoxville Junior High School. It housed the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Miss Nell McGowen, one of the first teachers in it, became the principal in 1922. She held this position for 28 years when she had to retire because of illness. The town realized the service she had done for the school and dedicated it in her honor on October 19, 1950, It became the Nell McGowen Junior High. The need for another high- school was realized and in 1953 construction began on a new high school. It was completed in February of 1955. We started classes in our present Nell McGowen Junior High on February 8, 1955, with 121 Freshmen, 93 eighth graders, 113 seventh graders, and 103 sixth graders. We are all getting adjusted to this building and hope we will have as many happy me mor ies of it as we have of our old Junior High. -- Mic ke y Schmidt, PORTER'S FOOD MARKET SCOT'I S PETROLEUM COMPANY Qimfe 8 BACK ROW: Robert Dixon, Mickey Schmidt, Alex Barbour, Mike May, Doyle Birkenholz, Larry DeGeest, Andrew Emanuel, Jim Shafland, Ronald Reed, James Birk, Jerry Klein.
