Boys’ Track FIRST ROW: Jim Taper, Lyle Evans, Walter Leong, Frank Batchelor, Harland Kercher, Gene Kangas, Conrad Bredlear, Dan Kost, SECOND ROW: Fred Broberg, Ed Broberg, Randy Simonsen, Robert Kost, John Kangas, Steve Smith, Robert Pfund, Mark Johnson, Ron Ford. Coach Mr. Bolton Establishing four new school records, Knappa’s track men, coached by Mr. Chuck Bolton, gave out¬ standing performances for the sea¬ son. Two school records were set and two were broken: John K. -220 in 22.3 sec; Conrad B. -2 mile in 11 min. 15. 5 sec. ; Ed B. , Randy S. Conrad B. , Fred B. -Mile Relay in 3 min. 45. 8 sec. ; Steve S. , Fred B. , Ed B. , John K. -440 Relay in 47. 4 seconds. An exceptional individual, John Kangas, managed to snap up about every first in the eight meets in the 220 and 100 yd. dash and also col¬ lected quite a few firsts in the broad jump. In the 100 yd. dash, he was 1 10 second away from the school record with a time of 10.2 sec. Ron Ford was another top trackster with his best javelin throw for the season being 163 feet. At the district track meet the tracksters took 3rd with 9 placing: Gary S. -3rd high jump; Walter L. -4th jave¬ lin; Ed B. -3rd 440; Randy S. -4th high hurdles; Fred B. -4th 220; Conrad B. -4th mile; John K. 1st 100 yd. dash, 220 Ron F. - 1st javelin; Ed B. , Randy S., Con¬ rad B. , Fred B. -2nd Mile Relay; Steve S. , Fred B. , Ed B. , John K. -2nd 440 Relay. John K. , Ron F. , Fred B. , Conrad B. , Steve S. , Randy S. , and Ed B. , compete d in the state track meet at Pleasant Hill, May 19 and 20, with none placing.

BACK ROW: Harold Salo, Fred Kor- honen, Carl Salo, Kevin Ryon, Gary Kent, Heikki Ylipelto- cap tain; Steve Gerttula, Bob Hammond, Nip Hum- masti. Coach Mr. George Winning 11 of its 12 games, Knappa's baseball team, coached by Mr. Archie George, became the year's District Champs. In the quarter-finals game at Stayton for state competition, Knappa lost to Regis 3-0. Kevin Ryon received the batting trophy with a season average of . 484. Nip Hummasti was second lead¬ ing batter with a . 400 average. Hummasti, who was the top pitcher with a record of 5-1, distinguished himself this season when he threw i a no-hit game. 19
