Gnce again, the ceremony was held after a graduation practice, but there was a different, added twist: unlike other years, winners did not know what award they were to receive until the announcement was made on stage. This added to the overall suspense and excitement in the ceremony. Principal Vernon Smith, master of ceremonies, stated that the Class of '84 had received in excess over a half million dollars in scholarships and grants. He thanked the senior counselors for helping the graduates prepare their scholarship applications and giving recommendations in order for them to receive their awards. Smith also said, We're very proud of the Class of '84. Individually and collectively, they have brought us recognition in three significant areas. The three areas were the Academic Decathlon, the District 15-5A literary meet, and their help in assisting Klein Forest in being named one of the 12 exemplary schools in Texas. Awards given ranged from perfect attendance to honor graduates and National Honor Society, from Outstanding Achievement in Calculus to Best Drama Student. Scholarships were given from such prestigious schools as Harvard, Rice, SMU, University ofTexas and Boston University. Each winner walked across the stage to the sound of applause from family and friends. In closing, Smith said, We congratulate you fseniorsj on 12 years oflong, hard work. You have risen to the challenges presented by parents, school, and time. You now face even greater challenges. We wish you the very best in whatever you do. 52 SEN IORS
