Back row, Coach Norma Io Stephens, Stacy McBride, Jeanna Herrall, Virginia Landa, Rhonda Ieffery, Susan Valenick, Betty Kossie and Coach Susan Boetting. Q31 Dawn Fletcher passes the ball around the court. L9 : Freshman basketball coaches Norma Io Stephens and Susan Boetting felt that the freshman girls basketball team was very inexperienced and had very little basketball background which was reflected on their season record. The team started to set various goals during district play and experienced success in reaching these goals, Coach Stephens said. This also gave the team some unity and cohesivenessff Among the team's strengths was their quickness and strong guard play. The lack of playing experience was the one factor that hampered the team throughout the season, Coach Boetting explained. Freshman Tina Schwettman reflected that the team's best moment was starting the season with a victory over Stratford. SPORTS 193 i Q

Experience often makes a good athlete and this was the case for the girls junior varsity squad who experienced their share of wins and losses. The girls showed a lot of heart and that the were true competitors, explainec? Coach Susan Boetting in summing up the cage season. With the leadership of sophomore captain Erlynt Querrero and Memory Clary.Thejuniorvarsitysquaddisplayed determination and enthusiasm, ac- cording to Coach Boetting. Many of the games played were close contests with the deciding baskets coming within seconds of the final buzzer. Although the IV'ers ended their season with a 8-18 mark, the girls were at their best for the Kingwood Tournament where the received first Y place in the consolation round. 192 SPORTS an Q13 Girls' JV team members are, front row, Tammy Lo, Memory Clary, Erlyne Guerrero, Lisa Coppoletta and Ienet Galvan. SOCCER all the to state 194 SPORTS kick way A state championship was not an unreasonable lgoal for the boys varsity soccer team w en the season began. After all, 11 lettermen were returning from a team that has went to the state playoffs. However, it was not to be. The team rolled along unbeaten for the majority of the season, maintaining a number-one ranked status in the state. Then, the Eagles were defeated by Kingwood, 1-0. The Eagles shook this loss off and proceeded to win the Region III championship for the second season in a row. However, the Eagles' quest for a state crown came to an end in a 1-0 loss to eventual state champ Richardson Pearce, ending up with a record of 24-2-0 overall and 13-1-0 in district.
