Zhey Worked behind the Scenes Klamath Falls can be proud of the outstanding educational system that has been established under Superintendent Arnold Gra-lapp in his ten years in Klamath Falls. He heads the entire city school system as well as our high school. Co-operation and interest in every field of student endeavor has been shown by the K.U. school board. The school board serves as a link between the public and the students. During our years in Klamath Falls schools the board has put in many long hours, all without pay, to develop the city's outstanding educational system. Thanks to these people K.U.H.S. will continue to grow bigger and better. SCHOOL BOARD Left to right: C. S. Elliot, Arnold Gralapp, Charles Carlson, Harold Ashley, Scott Warren, Ed Robinson, S. Honorable Mentions went to Dick Lundsten and Doug las Campbell. Hitch hiking?? CAL GILMORE The annually awarded most inspirational player trophy was presented to Cal Gilmore this year. Cal, playing one of the finest brands of ball Klamath has seen in a long time, figured very highly in the Pel's wins. VERN PRYOR The best lineman trophy went to Vernon Pryor who has played Pel ball for 3 years. His blocking led the way to many Pel touchdowns while his tackling stopped quite a few opponents. Dr. Wright was the first and only graduate from K.U.H.S. in 1895. He was valedictorian, salutatorian, and all the rest up the line. The students voted and it was agreed that the baseball field would be named Dr. G. I. Wright Field, At halftime of Bend-Klamath game Dr. Wright was presented a K blanket and the dedication naming the baseball field Dr. G. I. High isn't it?? After losing the largest and most important part of their height with last year's graduating class together with inexoerience proved fatal for the Pels. After taking the district title for two years and second in state two years ago the Pels opened the season hoping to repeat themselves. They did open their season—by dropping a pair to Redding. Then came University High from Eugene, who were easily defeated by the Pels. The Pels then traveled to Chico, California, where they were swamped by the California lads. Bend power-housed the Pelicans. Roseburg dropped two to the Pels and then came the district play with the Pels having a preceding record of four wins and six losses. 52 Take two?? to tango Hold me. Thrill me. Kiss me The Pels, hopes still riding high, opened district play by defeating Ashland and on the following evening dropping one to Ashland. Then came another split, this against Grants Pass. Medford swamped the Pels both games. Then came Grants Pass again who the Pels again beat by one point and on the following night lost. Coach McCall's boys then settled down and defeated Ashland twice on Pelican court. The Pels ended the season by splitting with Medford, the district champions for 1953, thus ending in second place. For four straight years the Pels copped the state championship and then last year dropped to fourth place. This year the Pels again went through the regular season undefeated and again won the district championship. In the state meet at Corvallis in March they moved up to second place, placing next best behind Newberg. The Pels added two more to their lost list of state champions: Dean Johnson, who defended his 148-pound title successfully, and Jay Dearing, who took the 136-pound title. The same problem is faced during track season as in baseball and tennis season. The yearbook is at the printers; thus last year's track squad is shown on these pages. Since last year's team consisted of Sophomores and Juniors, with the exception of one or two, the team should do quite well because it has over half of last year's team returning. After three years of hard work, the class of 54 under the competent leadership of President George Knight, Vice Prexy Sylvia Gerber, Secretary Dena Lampropulos, Yell Leader Stan Kuhlman, and Advisor Eva Burkhalter is well prepared to lead K.U. through next year's activities. When entering their junior year the class of 54 had sponsored many projects in order to earn money for the junior-senior prom, which it was their honor to sponsor free for the seniors in 1953.
