Destroyer Squadron Thirteen DESRON THIRTEEN is one of the Navy's longest continuously commis- sioned Squadrons. Its operational histo- ry began in july 1941 when rt was orga- nized as part of the U. S. Atlantic Fleet to participate in the Neutrality Patrol off the U. S. coastline and to escort convoys of U. S. shi s across the Atlantic prior to the entry ofythe United States into World War II. When the United States joined the Al- lies in World War ll, DESRUN THIR- TEEN took a very active part in all the Allied operations in the Africanflviedi- terranean Theater. When the Korean Conflict broke out, DESRON THIRTEEN ships supported the United Nations efforts by roviding shore bombardment, port blockades, patrols and escort services to carrier task forces. ln the Cold War years that followed the Korean Armistice, the Squadron con- tinued to make regular deployments to the Vtfestern Pacific, consistently main- taining a high state of readiness in all areas of destroyer operations. As the role of the United States in Vietnam in- creased, DESRON THIRTEEN was a ain ready for action. lN'hile on patrol, srips of the Squadron played a part in the Tonlain Cult incident that eventually resulted in air strikes over North Viet- nam.
