He envied the f-wsedom of the birds, soaring through the clear blue sky, unbound by the chains of Earth's gravity. For countless years man tried to break his bonds, to fly with the birds, always unsuccessfully. Finally two young men from Day- ton, Ohio, Wilbur and Orville Wright brought a flimsy craft to the wind-swept beaches of North Carolina. Their flight, though rela- tively short, was the first big step in man's reach for the heavens, and beyond. The Wright Brothers' suc- cess made Kitty Hawk . . . First in Flight. -ui si 4 s Continuing A Proud Heritage The aircraft carrier USS KITTY HAWK is the second U. S. Navy ship to bear the name of the small North Caroli- na town near which Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the first heavier-than-air manned aircraft on December 17, 1903. Aviation has come a long way Si11C6 that eventful day. Nine such 12-second, 120- foot flights would be required to travel from the bow to the stern of today's USS KITTY HAWK. The first Navy ship to bear the name was a 498-foot aircraft transport used in World War II. Built in 1932 as a commer- cial ship, she was acquired by the Navy in 1941 and modified to transport air- craft. She was decommissioned in 1945 and returned to her peacetime role. Today's KITTY HAWK was con- structed by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, New Jersey. Launched on May 21, 1960, she was com- missioned April 29, 1961. Carrying an air wing of more than 85 aircraft, the 80,000 ton ship of over 1,065 feet in length has a complement of more than 5,000efficers and men. g I ' In 1961, KITTY HAWK cruised around South America to her new home port of San Diego. There she prepared for her first Vwlestem Pacific deployment, which began in September 1962. During the next io years, KITTY HAWK and Air.Wing ELEVEN completed six Viet- nam conflictlgcombat cruises, winning one Presidential Unit Citation, four Navy Unit Commendations, a Meritori- ous Unit Commendation and many oth- er awards. A In 1973 and 1975, KITTY HAWK and her air wing again deployed to the West- ern Pacific, participating in many Sev- enth Fleet exercises to maintain oper ational readiness. The 1973 cruise in cluded a 68-day Indian Ocean stint. Early in IVIarCl1 1976, KITTY HAWK began a year-long overhaul during which exten- sive modernization and modifigation completed her conversion from an attack carrier to a general purpose carrier. Key changes enabled KITTY HAWK to oper- ate the Navy's new F-14 Tomcat fight- er and S-3 'V1king anti-submarine air- craft. On july 1, 1978 KITTY HAWK welcomed Air Wing FIFTEEN and began preparations for her next cruise. On May 30, 1979, KITTY HAWK and Air Wing FIFTEEN left San Diego for the Eastern Pacific. This scheduled May to December deployment, which includ- ed Indochina refugee search and assis- tance operations and Korea contingency operations, was extended for two months by Arabian Sea readiness operations in response to the Iranian crisis. The ship and air wing were awarded the Navy Ex- peditionary medal for this 74-day period. After nine months, KITTY HAWK re- turned to San Diego on February 25, 1980. In july, she was awarded the Battle Efficiency E and Meritorious Unit Ci- tation. On April 1, 1981, KITTY HAWK and her embarked Air Wing PIFTEEN left San Diego for her 13th deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. The ship and air wing were awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal and Humani- tarian Service Medal for the rescue of Vietnamese Boat People in the South China Sea. In January 1982, KITTY HAWK trav- eled to Bremerton, Washington, for a year-long comprehensive overhaul that was completed in January 1983. After a vigorous work-up period, KIT- TY HAWK deployed as the flagship for Battle Group Bravo. During Exercise Team Spirit '8-4 she was struck by a submerged Victor class submarine in the Sea of japan, forcing the submarine to be towed back to her home port. KIT- TY HAWK logged over 62,000 miles on the deployment, which included a two- month-plus on station period in the North Arabian Sea. She steamed into home port San Diego on August 1, 1984. AIMD handles almost any problem which may prevent the aircraft from tak- ing off. No art of the aircraft is too large or too small for AIMD. From auges to engines, from tires to repaciing the parachutes AIMD has it covered. They also repair the yellow gear which moves thc aircraft about the flight and hangar decks. With l-light operations. drills and the day-to-day routine ol' make ing the ship go through the water there s not much time left for the Hawk sailor to relax and unwind. But he does when he can. . The forms of relaxation are as varied as the individual sailor. Manx' take ad- vantage of educational opportunities, ei- ther Navy courses or college courses through the PACE program. '5elf-im- provernent is also physical in nature. Crewmembers make use of the Hawks we iiioiii to is-uild up or slim clown. ijii rio-ity citiiis the llignt deck is the riinnci's domain, T hc llight deck is also used as a make- shift beach. Qn holiday routine at sea the crew enjoys an old fashioned steel beach picnic. The order of the day is boxing. basketball. hamburgers and basking in the sun, The Hawk sailor s relaxation can be spontaneous, such as three buddies on the hangar deck kicking a hacky-sack. lt can be as quiet as reading a good book in the ships library or letting one s imagi- nation go. playing various strategy games - or the more traditional games of cards or chess. Relaxation can be as personal as writ- ing a letter home or raucous as bull ses- sion in the lounge. Shakespeare wrote To sleep, per- chance to dreamf He must have been on deployment. Sleep is perhaps the most popular pastime. 'Sleep is relaxation in it s most complete form. ln sleep the weary sailor can escape the rigors of the day and dream ot' going home. 14- 6.3.44-,ai4.:ln..1,..g,f2:'A,-1.52 xi' 'if HLA-4 'LL -vert? The record is in lar e part due to a core of professionals wio know how to get a job done right. More importantly they know how to do it safely. The eight man team, led by Com- mander Ed Powers, were constantly pa- trolling the ship. They look for anything which might pose a hazard to the ship or her crew. Their success speaks for itself. The USS Kitty Hawk Training Depart- ment coordinates the entire spectrum of training requirements needed for an air- craft carrier to complete its mission. The department's work force is divided into four main offices, I Division, Com- mand Career Counselors ICCCJ, Educa- tion Services Office KESOJ and Schools! TAD office. The I Division's primary function, as the Command Organization Effective- ness Specialist, is to assist the Com- manding Officer in implementing man- agerial and leadership programs, provide expertise in Equal Opportunity and Af- firmative Action issues, monitor drug and alcohol programs, and provide sup- port for Overseas Diplomacy programs. The Command Career Counselors QCCCJ are the program managers for the Commanding Officer's Retention Pro- gram. One of the major concerns of the CCC Officer is to conduct interviews on programs and benefits, It is also the re- sponsibility ofthe CCC to train and sup- port the Command Retention Team and to keep them informed of tfhartges in policy which may affect individual altr- tutles towards the Navy and this tom- matnd. The Commanding Office-r is in- formed on retention team activities and situations which have a positive or nega- tive impact on retention. The Educational Services Office and the Schools Office administer off-duty as well as on-duty training and educa- tion that is conducive to good morale and operation readiness. The primary func- tion of the ESO is the administration of the Navy-wide examinations for ad- vancement in rate. All requirements for the exam, such as professional advance- ment requirements, military leadership exams and military correspondence courses, are handled through the ESO. Two of the most successful and popular programs among crewmembers, Pro- gram for Afloat College Education IPACEQ and the functional Skills Pro- gram are handled by ESO as well. ln addition, there is the Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Support Program tD.-XNTESI i-.high is .i college correspondence program sri up through the Departrrient of Derertse and st-let-ted universities :iiiougitout the Limited Status Ellie 'lS:3.U stittt-E tract' ulitain- tirin- tas tor toirital xirilrti rv training lirlltting and tundrrig .iii t-z,:.iti.-rt to: tlttf-it N.it.'y 1tlttitil-Q JH' .il-tv lt.1!t.iir'i vsitlttlt iltt' '-nfttt' triliut i l I-. k1.lr..,. This Kenyan seaport played host to Kitty Hawk before, but that was years ago. For this crew, Mombasa - East Afri- ca - was a mystery waiting to be discov- ered. At first Hawk sailors were unsure of what they would encounter, but liberty parties soon found Mombasa a city of rare hospitality. Some explored the town, searching for that one-of-a-kind gift. Kenya is famous for its carvings of wood and soapstone and for its gems. Bargains were easy to find in the many quaint shops and booths. The Headquarters section is made up of the Administration Chief, Unit Diary clerk, DC and 3M systems management NCO, Supply NCO, Weapons Custodi- an, and the Training clerk. The orderlies assigned to the Captain and Admiral also belong to the Headquarters section. The Headquarters section performs the be- hind the scenes functions of the Guard and takes care of the paperwork and oth- er loose ends which may come about in the day-to-day operations of the detach- ment. The Marine Detachment Guard of the Day is divided into two duty sections, Port and Starboard. Each has its own Ser- geant of the Guard and falls under the direction of the Guard Chief and Guard Officer. They perform the everyday functions that are necessary for Marines assigned to Kitty Hawk to provide secti- rity. At times, working hand in hand with the Ship's Masters at Arm'-, they providi- firepower to the MAA force. Along with their regular duties- as security guards. the Marine Detachment i- taskvtl with 156 various other jobs. They provide the Honor Guards and Colors Details for Changes of Command and Burial De- tails, and render the appropriate honors for visiting dignitaries. In order to provide better all-around security, the Marines train qualified Na- val personnel in the use of weapons, such as the M-14 service rifle, M870 Shotgun, and the .45 caliber pistol. Their purpose: the Ships Self Defense Force. These sailors are called out in times of emergency to augment the Marines and MAA force. The iviarines train in depth. Both are LDO's, and as former Aviation Ordnancemen, they have brought tremendous experience and technical knowl- edge to a job usually filled by an officer from the aviation field. It takes many specialists to handle the dif- ferent jobs in the department. There are Cun- ner's Mates, Gunner's Mates Technicians, Aviation Ordnancemen, Torpedomen, Elec- trician's Mates, Machinist Mates, IC-men, and Yeomeng close to 180 personnel working together to provide the explosive punch of the KITTY HAWK. Additionally a five man EOD detachment provides critical support during every ordnance evolution. P f :IX-I- ' ,-e- .Qw Z4 Aloha, welcome to Hawaii. The traditional greeting of the islands was everywhere as Kitty Hawk made her last port visit of the '85 deployment. The 50th state is a study of contrasts. The hustle and bustle of the capital city of Honolulu is counter to the relaxed pace of the north shore and the solemni- ty of the Arizona Memorial. The one constant was the people, who were as open and friendly as you would expect from living in paradise. Kitty Hawk's crew had just enough time to enjoy the warm sun, sandy beaches and hospitable atmosphere of Hawaii. It was just long enough to create a lingering impression . . . until the next time. Aloha, farewell, until we meet again. l 4 I 1 was 'Y' 13, li -mf ,v ,gb 'I I :nn QT!! YT- Hhile in Hawaii, kitty Hawk :ook on more than SOO Tigers tor the trip to San Diego. The cruise gave the Tigers the rare opportunity to experience with their sponsors. the daily routine of lite on a carrier at sea. But it wasnt all routine. The ship ottered some pleasant sur- prises including an air show, a steel beach picnic and athletic events, But mainly the 'Tigers' had the chance to see firsthand, what their son or father does at work. Tiger cruise 'SS was a week filled with special moments for the Ti- gers and their sailors. ,po-.. l Qfw Q.-. --.. 4- --.p m .wt- in '! ,, pr ..- nv-l-...,, ..4l- 'g-ll. 1, 1 L-- .3 .F L - , h :- 'Tug 4, '- 4--' N- ,. ..'l '1'.r fl i ' .. -. -.W 1-Lk, -1.50 6 ...J I 4 Q It 1 ' V - - ' - ' f- wif' - ' 'r - r. - '.l?rn-.1:7'.vf:A'LY:f1?FF1s h.i!1's:', fwv' :-14 K lx' li Q-'lv-CHQJ H I I-I!-I , :'..,.x, i N, Y' 'Sai ll'-fr ..
