With the ever increas- ing swiftness of travel the size of our globe seems to be shrinking. Therefore, a knowledge of the lan- guages of the people only a few hours distance from us is a necessity for gaining world-wide understand- ing. By studying the language of another area of the world, the student gains not only a knowledge of that language, but also an understanding of the people, customs, and traditions which comprise that culture. LIBRARY Miss Bust, Mr. Marvin, Mrs. McGill, Mr. McClanahan, Mrs. Smith. LIBRARY Kirkwcod ' s library has be- come the service center of the school. Not only does our library supply the students with a wide variety of books, magazines, and pamphlets; but also under the able guid- ance of the librarians, stud- ents are taught to make use of new materials and find new ways to use old ma- terials. ENGLISH Essential in cur everyday life is a thorough under- standing of our language and its correct usage. English involves much more than the study of dang- ling participles and gerunds. It includes a knowl- edge of the literary works of well known authors and contributes to an appreciation of the finer things in life. Likewise the ability to express oneself in words and in writing will prove an invaluable asset in this world of advanced communication. Jean ' s big moment. A-e-i-o-u ENGLISH Standing: Mr. Smith. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DRIVER ' S EDUCATION Strengthening our physical bodies while increasing our sportmanship, agil- ity, and enjoyment of sports is the re- sponsibility of the physical education department. Stimulating class activities and extra-curricular sports make P.E. a favorite activity of all those who partic- ipate in its program. Teaching safe driving skills is the responsibility of the Driver ' s Education Course. A program combining actual driving and class sessions produces many fine student drivers. FINE ARTS Appreciation of the fine arts is important in modern living. Americans have been accused of being over- ly materialistic, and of not enjoying the cultural as- pects of life. The emphasis on academics is partly responsible for this situation; therefore, a knowledge of music and art will produce a well-balanced indi- vidual.
