The world of teachers, admin- istrators, and classes opens com- panionship and new learning. Athletics give us a growth in competition and strength. In or- ganizations and social activities our interests are broadened, our responsibilities increased and our horizons expanded. These unexplored realms in which we travel at Kirkwood High School will make us better prepared for the wider world be- fore us as the doors of our high school close behind. 6un. Yes, Steinie as she is affec- tionately called, does indeed deserve more rec- ognition — the first Pioneer had a sale of one hundred and twenty-five copies; this year the Pioneer will be distributed to more than twelve hundred students. These figures indicate great growth, mainly a result of Mrs. Steinkamp ' s in- spiring leadership. Steinie has done more than lead the growth of the Pioneer; she has helped every individual on every staff become not only a better and more productive staff member, but also a better person. Everyone who has ever come in contact with Steinie will long remem- ber being called a doll or you sweet thing, and sometimes receiving the highest praise - that ' s just ultra, ultra! Mrs. Steinkamp is indeed a pioneer. We, of the Pioneer staff of 1960, join with all the staffs of past years in proudly dedicating the Pioneer of 1960 to Mrs. Steinkamp, with the hope that it will measure up to the standard of excellence in I right or am I wrcng? S Eleven ENGLISH Essential in cur everyday life is a thorough under- standing of our language and its correct usage. English involves much more than the study of dang- ling participles and gerunds. It includes a knowl- edge of the literary works of well known authors and contributes to an appreciation of the finer things in life. Likewise the ability to express oneself in words and in writing will prove an invaluable asset in this world of advanced communication. Jean ' s big moment. A-e-i-o-u ENGLISH Standing: Mr. Smith. Therefore, a knowledge of the lan- guages of the people only a few hours distance from us is a necessity for gaining world-wide understand- ing. By studying the language of another area of the world, the student gains not only a knowledge of that language, but also an understanding of the people, customs, and traditions which comprise that culture. LIBRARY Miss Bust, Mr. Marvin, Mrs. McGill, Mr. McClanahan, Mrs. Smith. LIBRARY Kirkwcod ' s library has be- come the service center of the school. Not only does our library supply the students with a wide variety of books, magazines, and pamphlets; but also under the able guid- ance of the librarians, stud- ents are taught to make use of new materials and find new ways to use old ma- terials. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DRIVER ' S EDUCATION Strengthening our physical bodies while increasing our sportmanship, agil- ity, and enjoyment of sports is the re- sponsibility of the physical education department. Stimulating class activities and extra-curricular sports make P.E. a favorite activity of all those who partic- ipate in its program. Teaching safe driving skills is the responsibility of the Driver ' s Education Course. A program combining actual driving and class sessions produces many fine student drivers. FINE ARTS Appreciation of the fine arts is important in modern living. Americans have been accused of being over- ly materialistic, and of not enjoying the cultural as- pects of life. The emphasis on academics is partly responsible for this situation; therefore, a knowledge of music and art will produce a well-balanced indi- vidual. Miss Shikles clarifies her point MB SOCIAL STUDIES Only by learning how people have lived in the past and how they are living in the present can we plan for the future. The social scientist strives to improve our society by contributing to the public a knowledge of previous and existing world condi- tions. Through the study of these conditions, both past and present, an individual may learn in what way he fits into the picture, and his proper role in our society. Wig brews lunch for the D3ys. This year ' s Millermen enjoyed one of the finest seasons in its history as they finished the season with a 22-8 record. The highlight of schedule came in the Normandy Tournament when the fourth seeded Pioneers defeated Du- bourg and Ladue, knocked off highly rated St. Charles, and upset a tough U. City squad to take first place honors. Between semesters, The Millermen engaged in the Webster Tourn- ament where they defeated Normandy, over- took U. City with a sixpoint splurge in the final 38 seconds, but lost to St. Charles in the finals to finish in the runner up position. The Kirk- wcod roundballers captured the district Tourn- ament at Mehlville by whipping Fox of Arnold, DuBourg, and rival Webster Groves, but they lost to St. Louis University High in the stale- playoffs at Washington University. This year ' s squad was led by Captain Roger Schurig, who captured the school ' s individual scoring record for one game with 45 and for one season with 680. Rog Schurig also made the first team all-district and first team all-state in the newspaper honor polls. Dan Sarver and Steve Miller were placed on the all-district honorable mention squad, and Jim Waller re- ceived all-suburban league honorable mention recognition. Rounding out the team ' s top play- ers were John Loomis, Rich Morley, Chuck Himes, and Mike Bywater. Bill Spiller, Jim Schmidt, Terry Russell, John DeGarmo, and Bob Press joined first year members Elliot Schubert, Mike Bruckdorfer, Ollie Williams, Bill Finnie, and Bill Badenoch to make one of the most enthusiastic teams of KHS. After only a few weeks of hard conditioning, the boys fell to CBC, their first opponents, 21-39 (Low Score wins). A week later, they bowed to strong Normandy runners, 22-36. But, after running in the Beaumont Invitational, the team hit their best stride and defeated Bishop DuBourg, 23-56. At District, Bob Press and Bill Spiller qualified for State. Encouraging sportsmanship and participation in athletics, K-Club has developed an elabo- rate intramural program in which any girl may participate. From these intramurals, the class teams and varsities are chosen. By participat- ing in these programs, a girl earns points, and after accumulating the required number of points, she is admitted into K-Club. K-Club feels, however, that ability in athletics is not of major importance and that good sportsmanship and an ability to work with others are equally as important. Therefore, aside from encour- aging athletics, K-Club promotes team spirit and good will. Under the leadership of Mrs. Gentry and Mrs. Skoudy, K-Club has also been very active socially by sponsoring the Buzz Book, a father-daughter banquet, and two suc- cessful backward dances, Indian Summer, and The Hatchet Hop. From its high aims and accomplishments, K-Club has proven itself to be one of the very important cogs in the wheels of a well-rounded girl. WW Susie scores again. VARSITY HOCKEY Field Hockey has always been a favorite sport among the girls at K.H.S. The intramural competition was keen, making the selection of the team a difficult task. The varsity team this year had a record of one win, one loss and no ties. In the opening game of the season they defeated Bayless 2-0, only to drop the next con- test with Ladue 2-0. VARSITY SOFTBALL For the second year in a row Kirkwood ' s 1959 varsity Softball team was undefeated. They suffered their only loss to Bayless 27-28, and defeated Webster and Ladue in the final games of the season 22-12 and 31-18 respectively. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Volleyball is a popular spcrt at Kirkwood. This year the selection of the class and varsity teams was dif- ficult because so many girls took part in the intramural program.
