S. golf team returning this year, Coach Lenich and his turfmen seem to be headed toward a very powerful year. Last year's team although finishing third in the Suburban League rose to great heights at the end of last spring by capturing the St. Louis District Championship. H o n o r s went to Ken I-Ieileman as he won first place in the tournament held at St. Charles. Led by lettermen Heileman, Myles Roche, the team captain, Bob Smith, lim Greber, Bill O'Toole, Dave Morgan, and Steve Powell, the Pioneers rolled to a record of ten wins and three losses, including wins over Rites nour, Webster, University City, St. Charles, Brentwood, and Parkway: while losing to Normandy, Ladue, and St. Louis Univer- sity High. With Roche, S m i t h , Greber, Morgan, and Powell returning this year, Coach Lenich, after having a terrific team last spring in his first year of coaching, is again expecting a very sucessful season. K-Klub fosters the idea of sportsmanship, leadership, and skill in many activities. Organization of intramural sports, choosing the girls' hockey, basketball, volley- ball and softball class teams, and selecting the varsity teams are the main sporting activities of ofafifing jacbfiond K-Klub. Under the able leadership of their spon- sors, Mrs. Gentry and Mrs. Skouby, K-Klub gave two very successful dances. South Pacific held in October was exceedingly re- alistic with its authentic palm trees, canoe, and thatched hut. Members help to accomplish this in rriany ways. Among these are providing ,Vlrivlu-luur busses to the many football and basketball games at other schools, This club also planned and sponsored the pre-game parades, the larg- est of which was the Tacky Day Parade. A few of Pep Club's many other projects include sell' ing red and white shakers and football pencils as well as planning and putting on the skits for the different pep assemblies. Their annual backward dance, Rhapsody in Blue held in lanuary was a big success. One of Pep Club's biggest projects this year was purchasing the large pennants from different schools, hanging in our gym. Girls' Chorus is a worthy and popular organ- ization at K. H. S. which aids in providing excellent musical programs during the year. In connection with A Cappella, the girls perform at the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. Under the able leadership of Mrs. McGill, these programs have supplied the school with beau- Om- Hundred Thirty-Iwo tiful music, which will long be remembered by the student body and faculty. Much time was spent in planning and practicing for these bril- liant performances. The students who take this course gain a true knowledge of the fundamen- tals of music which will bring pleasure in future years. The newest vocal class at Kirkwood High is designed tor those interested students who are relatively new in the field of music. While teaching these aspiring singers principles ot music appreciation, their director, Mrs. McGill, conducts their rehearsals in order that they might appear in concert with the A Cappella Choir and Girls' Chorus. The fundamental voice training in the course and the useful musical knowledge acquired here provide a basis for membership in the other singing groups in school. Arduous practice ot vocal exercises, melodies, and harmonies, sometimes broken with lighter moments, will remind a student of his days in Mixed Chorus, MIXED CHORUS 'lknp Row: Reirn, Havnnr, Wagenknecht, Moor, Purdue, Aitch, McNew, Cwens, Roy, Nickel, Russ, Kessler, Roth, Rosonbrough, Zirrirnvrrriari. ltow Two: Mrs. McGill, Schell, Gucrclrnan, Hartmann, Clarkson, Benton, Carwell, LaBarr', Beckman, Parks, Elberts, Lyons, Vtlillrrrore, llrwzrm. llrwltturrr ltciw: Sarles, Srlirrritz, Barnett, Wolte, Harry, Schaeter, Swacker, Hcncke, Reed, Canliold, Towle, Sobery, Stroup, Maretti. t Y 3 L Q V , : tg it ts , - A I :bi .' 5 '.- - , R U. Say, look at those paved park- ing lots, no more muddy feet? We're glad to have you back at K. H. S., Mr. Moore. Congratu- lations to the Call on its 50th anniversary-the dance was great. That and the first Teen Town with the K-Tones really started our dull !?l nights rockin'! Hey, all you Sammy Sneeds, remem- ber to replace your divots. tThe girls are taking up golf, or is it taking thern?!l Although we lost our first game with DuBourg, we're still looking forward to a great football season. Smile,- Pioneer pictures are finally over, for now! OCTQBERZ October has drifted in with fall- ing leaves and failing seniors! Mr. Horn, were you really the Veiled Prophet? The K-Klub backwards, South Pacific, was, this year as always, one of the most popular dances of the year. After a hard week of campaigning, the new class presidents emerged as Dave, Don, and Ieff. Congratulations, boys! We're glad you all took us up and bought, bought, bought a Pioneer! While some of our gang was strut- ting its stuff on St. Louis Hop, our great Pio- neers were slaughtering C. B. C. 25 to 19. Good going guys! With a football game, parties, and the usual good clean fun, Cshaving cream is a form of gap, isn't it?l another Halloween has decoratively passed. NOVEMBER! Have all you seniors started your college applications yet? College Day really opened our eyes as to how present our future is! The Art Club Dance, Le Bal Mas- que, started busy November with a bang. And wasn't the Little Theater play, Death Takes a Holiday, tremendous? You say you've got problems? So do the Everly Brothers and Tom Dooley. Tacky Day really rolled out the weird costumes. !Speakir1g of gorilla warfarell The One Hundred F orty-six fabulous Pep Club skit, the parade, and the eleven damp bonfires fired up our spirits for the really cold T-Day game. You'll get the jug back next year, Websterl Iudy reigned as Kirkwood's Queen at the Friendship Dance, with Felicia, Margie, Sybil, Ianet, and Alice as her special maids. DECEMBER: They tell us winter is here even though it doesn't feel like it! This month really bounced out the basketballs. Com' on Miller- men, let's fight! Gaily embellished doors, old familiar Christmas carols, and pine-scented rooms really helped to put us in the Christmas spirit during these last few days of 1958. On the list of holiday activities was a festive din- ner party given by the Call editors where the reporters were pinned. One of the most gala events during vacation was Steinie's tea. Feli- citations on your wedding day, Miss Harris! After whirling dreamily away to music at the Xmas Formal, our heads whirled merrily t?l away with the old year on New Year's Eve! HAPPY NEW' YEAR EVERYBODY l I IANUARY: Through sleet and snow and dark of day, we plunge our ever weary way back to school after a wonderful two weeks vacation tspent on term papersll Felicia and Larry are the most popular seniors at K. H. S. according to the votes of Sophomores, Iuniors, and Seniors. Congratulations you-all, you really deserved it! The annual Pep Club dance was a Rhapsody in Blue on the tenth. The poor tortured girls sporting bright red K's are finally convinced that their syrupy hair was worth it. Haw were the K-Klub initiations?! The March of Dimes committee teamed up with the Hi-Y boys to put on a really magnificent talent show. R- Day has struck again! How were YOUR re- port cards? The many basketball games and wrestling meets helped to lighten the load of the end-of-semester tests. ML FEBRUARY! Little Theater again entertained us at an assembly where we learned just What's Wrong With The Girlsl We christ- ened our new cafeteria at the annual Pioneer Prance-Congratulations to Queen Anne and her maids Cindi, Donna, Frostie, Iulie, and Mitziel Coach Miller was honored at a great game with Webster on Millemight, and aren't we proud of Mr. Walther and our Matmenl Wi1l it hurt? That was a common question be- fore KHS'ers were clued in on what really goes on during those TB patch tests. The new Quill and Scroll members were initiated at an im- pressive banquet at Sue Hogan's home on the twenty-third. Seniors measuring for caps and gowns, planning for commencement day, and Iuniors madly getting ready for the Ir.-Sr. Prom, remind us that the school year is rapidly com- ing to a close. MARCH: Run, boysl Sadie Hawkin's Day is nothing like the week before the Hatchet Hop! Lyle was the deserving Hatchet Man, the other candidates being Larry, F rank, Iohn, Del, Emie, Tom, a:r1d Phil. We had a welcome break on the eleventh when the Grinnell College Choir entertained us and the Seniors chose their com- mencement speakers-Cindi, Doe, Ieff, Ernie, and Webb. Go, Millermen, gol was the cheer at the district basketball toumament, while just plain let's go was heard on the twentieth when the teachers had their meeting. t Tijuana Jail is still going strongll Congrats to the eight Merit Scholarship finalists from K. Come on, Kirkwoodl is a familiar shout as track season gets in full swing. Buy a Call and see who the 1959 May Maids are Congratulations to janet, Mitzie, Sybil, Nancy, Cindi, Ardeth, and Felicia. MAY: The teasers for the hilarious Senior play, january Thaw, and KXOK's Junior Town Meeting supplied frantic May with two very entertaining assemblies! The hard-hittin,' far-throwin' baseball team is going strong, while on the more traditional side of May, the beauti- ful May Queen reigned over the May Pete, its delicious dinner, and the dreamy Coronation Prom. Congratulations to the new cheerleaders, and the Call and Pioneer staffs! And don't you- all love this yea1 s Pioneerl Memorial Day is viewed by all as a well-earned vacation, but the seniors face it with a mixture of awe and dis- belief, for no longer will they walk the dear ole' halls of K. H. S. as students but only old grads. IUNE: As graduation day approaches, it is faced with mixed emotions. But as we look back, we remember the spirit of Turkey Day and Miller-night, the inspiration of learning we found in our classes, the enchantment of proms and May Fetes, and, most of all, the wonderful friendships we have made. Never will we for- get the excitement of our freshman year, the sophomore apprehensions we felt in a new high school, the complacency of being juniors, and the prestige and delight that went with our senior year. We've looked back with a smile and a tear, but we look ahead with growing anticipation, for now we have passed another milestone toward maturity. Good-bye, Good luck!
