THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1939 Their Pictures and a Brief History of Kirkwood Schools 640 HAIL KIRKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL The first step in the life of Kirkwood High School was taken by our forefathers on February 17, 1865, when the school district became incorporated. At the School Board meeting of Iune 18, 1866, it was de- cided to erect a temporary building which would not cost more than 352,500 This one room frame building stood on the corner of Adams and Clay for three years until the permanent school was built. The first building was moved and became the Booker T. Washington negro school. The same year the McGuffey reader came into use by a recommendation of the School Board. The highest grade taught the first year of the new school was the fourth. The classes became so crowded that they overflowed into the building of the Heinzelmann's Grocery. After a rather insignifi- cant fire in 1874 two new rooms were added. ln the historical year 1876, Mr. Tracey of Kirkwood was a commissioner to the Centennial Exposition of Philadelphia, so there were concerts and programs given here for the state's exhibit. lt was now possible to finish two years of high school in Kirkwood. A printed announcement by the School Board in 1882 stated: The branches and exercises taught in the District School shall be Reading, Vv'riting on slates, Manual Drill, Vocal Music, Geo- graphy, Drawing, History and Constitution of the United States, Composition, Elocution, and Algebra. In 1890 the brick building fronting Adams Avenue was erected. This consisted of a hall and two rooms on the east side. Five years later an addition of two rooms was made on the west and several on the south. Early in the morning of March 13, 1900, a great catastrophe occurred. The high school building burned to the ground. The Adams School was dedicated Ianuary 4, 1901. The first graduation exercises were held at the Armory Build- ing on North Kirkwood Road fthe site of the present Pitman Schooll in 1897 and were in honor of eleven graduates. At this time the school hours were from nine to three-thirty and each student was required to take five subjects, with no study hall periods provided. Athletics then were not considered important, so the only athletic field was a vacant lot one-half mile away which was prepared by any interested students. In 1896 the first after-school activity was beguny it was called the Kirkwood High School Literary Society. The program at Commencement of the first Senior class of the new school was quite classical and consisted largely of speeches on complicated and involved subjects by members of the class. Here are several examples of the topics: Electricity , Early History of Missouri , Pagan Ideals of Paradise , and Character Sketches . From 1902 to 1903 the enrollment for the four high school years and the sub-high school was 149 pupils. The students decided they had grown enough to need a paperg so in October, 1902, Volume 1, Number 1 of the Kirkwood lournal was published. It was in booklet form and cost twenty-five cents for a term sub- scription. One of the notices in an early issue read: Seniors alone are given their choice of seats in the study hall. The athletic news reported the election of the football captain and the preparations for the first game, which was with the team of the Business Men. A purse of 88.50 was made up for the preparation of the gridiron. In the fall of 1903 there were 35 tuition students from out of town. Many of them were from Clayton, which later built its own schools. One of the well known traditions of Kirkwood High is the annual Iunior-Senior boat ride. The custom began on May 22, 1903. when the first Senior Float was held. Two boats were hired and the boys rowed almost to Valley Park and then turned cmd all floated down to the Highlands. There was a time when the boys and girls were segregated on the grounds: for there was a high board fence which divided the rear of the school grounds in half. There was strict silence in the halls and the classes were formal, but the pupils were school-spirited and wore red and white ribbons to each game. The graduating class of 1904 contained Irish, Dutch, and German pupils and during the exercises the boys wore the same very short pants they always wore to school. The earliest school rival in sports and activities was Haight's Military Academy. About the year 1921 the name of the school paper was changed. The reason for the change is easily explained when it is observed that Webster Groves had just established a paper, THE ECHO, thus Kirkwood became THE CALL. One of the first articles in the newly named publication was a report of the short stop in Kirkwood of General Pershing and Field Marshal Foch, The next year the dances after the basketball games were revived with increased success: the debate team won the county championship: and the school tax failed to pass the voters. In the last few years there have been additions in buildings, courses, faculty, and outside activities. lust as we have looked back upon the beginnings of our school, it will be for those who follow us to pass judgment on Our times.
