ATHLETIC BANQUET Approximately 150 athletes, parents, faculty members, and friends enjoyed a bountiful cooperative dinner at 6:30 P.M. on Thursday, April 10, 1959, to honor the athletic squads ofKirkwood High School. Preceding the meal, Rev, Robert Rushing pronounced the invocation. Following the meal, Principal Edward Johnson welcomed all those present then introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr. Keith Parker of Granite City, Illinois. Mr. Parker discussed the importance of athletics to the school and to the boy himself. Stress was placed also on the boy's responsibility to himself and to the athletic program provided for him. Football and basketball awards were presented by the coaches, Mr. Read and Mr. Clements. Special awards in football went to John Simmons, Captain, and Larry Foster, voted Most Valuable Player by the squad. The Jr. Varsity Captain was Bruce Wolf and MVP, Ron Sullivan. In basketball, the Varsity Captain was Joe Henry, and teammates voted Larry Keener MVP. Bruce Wolf was also Captain of the Jr. Varsity Basketball Squad, and Gary Avery was named MVP. Varsity cheerleaders receiving awards were Nancy Rhinehart, Lynne Work, lva Kay Lindberg, and Karen Chandler. Letters were also presented to Kathy Cavanaugh, Elva Bickell, Sandra Nelson, and Nancy Smith, Jr. Varsity cheerleaders.
