Ninth Grade Girls Rats ...,......,......,.... . , Seventh and Eighth Grade Girls Mug Day Pageant 1940 Written and Directed by Sara Loie Pfahler THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN With your kind permission, folks, and Robert Browning's, too- We'll take his poem about rats and make it all come true: In the town of Hamelin, beside the Weser stream, The townsfolk very happy were and lived just like a dream. There was a day of Festival, land there begins my dittyl, When in the town the rats did run-Destruction! 'Twas a pity! Great rats, small rats, lean rats, brawny ones, Brown rats, black rats, gray rats, tawny ones - The women shrieked loudly, the Mayor just trembled- And his soldiers did shake when the rats were assembled. With May Pole streamers flying, the children had been dancing When suddenly upon them the rats did come aprancing- The rats did prance, the children fled- The people stood like lumps of lead. Until the Mayor did raise his hand Soldiers , said he, Drive out this band. The soldiers then with a thrust and a parry Fought off the rats Cwho did not tarryb. But they'd come again soon the people all knew So they warned the Mayor that they would sue. Just then, very low, they heard a strange sound, Nearer it came and all looked around. From afar, an odd figure came Playing a tune they could not name. He finally came before the Mayor, doffed his hat and bowed, All came closer to hear him talk, his voice was not a bit loud. Please, your Honor, I have a charm ' That will rid for you the rats that harm. They promised their pearls, their swords, and the crown, If only the Piper would make the rats drown- The Piper played and down the rats tumbled, They muttered and squeeked, they rumbled and grumbled. From place to place he piped advancing- And step for step they followed dancing. The women did a dance in glee The soldiers paraded merrily- The Piper came back to demand his pay The Mayor said, Be on your way- The rats are gone and you be gone, too, Here is a penny-that's all that is due - So again a tune the Piper played And the children followed, unafraid! Their parents stood as in a dream They could not move nor could they scream- The rats were gone, but their children, too! Because they'd not given the Piper his due- There, unhappily, the poem ends. If you don't mind, we'll make amends- Enter a lovely Fairy Queen accompanied by two elves- The people knew why she had come and shamed they were of 'selves If you will keep your promises in days that are to come, Then I will bring your children back. -They promised, everyone. She gave a signal, her elves did flee To do her bidding immediately. The children returned, the Piper, too, So he could receive what was his just due. And when he had received the Mayor's crown of gold He placed it on the Fairy Queen's head ........ our tale is told.
