Now we have reached our commencement And a new journey is in sight. What lies ahead? - The Future - Ajourney to Unknown Heights. CAROL ANN GARDNER NV! Dcdimlion This year we have the pleasure of dedicat- ing our yearbook to two people who we think are worthy of receiving this honor. Both of them are now serving their country inthe armed forces. Andrew Andy Victor came to our fair high school in 1949 as wrestling coach and as an assistant coach in football and base- ball. ln 1949 and 1950 he coached two c h a m p io n s h i p wrestling teams which brought honor to our school. While here those two years, Mr. Victor was active in extra-curricular activities and was the origi- nator of the K-Teens Club. All of the eighth graders remember him as their English, his- tory, and geography teacher and also as a wonderful person, but then, there isn't anyone in K.H.S. who does not like Andy, He will always be remembered for his smiling face and sense of humor. We of the Class of '52 want to wish him all the luck in the world. HARRY B. WILLIAMS Captain ANDREW VICTOR Lieutenant Mr. Harry Hank Williams is another be- loved person in that he always went out of his way for others. Last year, as Advisor, he had a prominent position in the editing of the yearbook. ln addition to that, he was assistant coach in football, wrestling, and track, however, wrestling is his favorite sport. Mr. Williams was assistant coach in 1941 for Mr. Pugh's championship football team of the Valley and the Eastern region. When he came to teach here, he was liked by everyone and the feeling was one of regret when he entered the service on April 21, 1951. Mr. Williams is overseas in Korea and we know that God will be with him. -, A',..H...... ' c s ,--p--- n . ' i 0 M - . , N , -Y it i -We -----w ,............ ,..,,,...,,,, ,,...,, W W-, a,,.,,,,. It is composed of seven men, who are all individually prominent in our community. They are Dr. A. W. Grover, Mr. Arthur R. Powell, Mr. Lundy Wright, Mr. William L. Morgan, Mr. Albert Fairchild, Mr. Louis Leger, and Mr. George M. Huey. They study conditions throughout the school district and make the decisions as to the operation of all the schools under their iuriscliction. These gentlemen serving on the school board have shown great interest in the activities carried on at the high school. We are indeed greatly indebted to them. The duties of Secretary, for the Board of Education, are capably discharged by Mrs. Marita Noone. The solicitor for the school district is Attorney William Brewster. The capable head of all Kingston schools is Mr. John Kennedy, Superintendent of schools. On his shoulders rests the responsibility of the repairs and improve- ment of all the schools in Kingston. He checks thoroughly and then approves plans concerned with the betterment of our schools. ln charge of the administration of our school is our Principal, Mr. Burton Hankey. The decisions involved in the management of the high school are well handled by him and his efficient office staff. He has cooperated fully with the programs of our faculty and the student body involving extra- curricular activities and any other school matters. He has given freely of his time and effort to help make these programs great successes. ln the ful- fillment of his duties Mr. Hankey has never been lacking. 3 it 55 BURTON W. HAN KEY Admin! fmfizfe .Assistants In his capacity as Director of Activities, Mr. lveson comes in contact with all the students at one time or other, and he is respected and admired by them all. He is especially well-known among the upper-class- men because he is Business Advisor of both the Junior and Senior classes. Kingston High School is very fortunate in having Mr. lveson as a member of the administrative staff. Our Capable Dean of Men in the high school is Mr. James Jones. lt is his duty to help boys needing advice on various problems. To the colleges which require them, he gives character references on former students applying for admission to college. Also, he participates in management of sports in the high school. Mr. Jones has many other duties which he attends diligently. Miss Williams has been a source of good advice to many girls who have been in need of counsel. Besides working with student problems, she directs the English department, participates in school programs, and is in charge of Kingston's participation in cultural inter- scholastic competition. Because Miss Williams treats those who come to her with sympathy and understand- ing, and because she capably handles those cases placed before her, we feel that we are indeed fortunate to have her as our Dean of Women. The Guidance Department, under the capable direc- tion of Mr. Bennett, advises the students in choosing their subiects and planning their careers. In addition, this department also has a tea for the college preparatory students, sponsors a career day, show films on various occupations, and prepares stu- dents for college board tests. This department is indeed worthy of the respect, admiration and confidence bestowed upon it by both the faculty and the students. Gaiden 5 6015114 elm' s HANNAH JAYNE HELEN DEVENDORF KATHERINE CRONIN The counselors, Miss Anita Williams, Miss Helen Devendorf, Miss Katherine Cronin, and Miss Hannah Jayne, and Mr. Anthony E. Hock work with some of the most serious problems of the high school students. There's a counselor for each class from the Freshman year to the end of one's high school career. Mr. Hock is the head of the Psychology Department in the school district. Hzzculfy Q? XV! No, the beginning, The beginning of a new life, a new task, a new triumph, So it is, and so will it always be. Commencement-the beginning. We must face foe and fortune yet unseen, We must carve our names in the stone of fame-or oblivion We know not what is to come and yet We are willing and eager to face the destiny we must meet. We are unafraid. Why? We fear not, for as we gaze backward into the past We can see the faces- The familiar faces of our parents, teachers, and schoolmates All have a faith in us All have entrusted us With some skill or knowledge. We must use these things well, We must use them for honor, and for good. So, no more looking back but ever onward, We go forth to serve- To serve God, our country, and selves. We have come to the gateway- Our commencement-the beginning. CAROL ANN GARDNER February 25, 1952 Senia 611155 Msfary ln September, l948, we entered Kingston High School as frightened Freshmen, and set as our goal, June 6, 1952. To us as Freshmen June seemed remote and far away. Our friendly teachers and Advisors did not give us much time to feel inadequate, as we be- came acquainted with IVANHOE, mid-year, and final examinations. Although we did not enter into many activities, we were ardent supporters of the sport dances and sport events. The year ended with all of us eagerly awaiting our role as Sophomores. It was September again and the beginning of our Sophomore year. Now we felt as if we knew our way around the school and we were no longer the targets for iokes about tickets to chapel and elevators to carry students from floor to floor. We entered into various activities, some choosing athletics, others ioining many clubs. When spring brought to a close our second year, we began to feel wiser and closer to our goal. Our Junior year! To start the year off, a magazine campaign was held for the purpose of raising funds for our class trip to Washington, D. C. Emerging from the campaign, the class was ready to present its annual Junior Play, which was MOTHER IS A FRESHMANX' It was received with great applause. Our talented Juniors designated a special day for entertainment in chapel. The class production was an out-growth of Tallulah Bankhead's BIG SHOW. To really show that it was Junior Day, a colossal sport dance was held in the evening. The Junior Prom, with its sweet music and dancing couples, brought the memorable year to a close. September, 1951, marked the beginning of our big year. Everything seemed to run smoothly and live up to our greatest expectations. The 1951 foot- ball squad won many games and our wrestlers cap- tured the title of Wyoming Valley Champions for the third consecutive year. The Class of 52 proved to have exceptional talent, for we were asked to repeat our Senior Play, THE BARRETTS OF WIM- POLE STREET. Co-operation reigned as numerous bake sales and campaigns were held to increase the number of figures in our bank account for the class trip. Finally, the amount was reached and there was a stir of excitement in the air as everyone pre- pared for the iourney. Following the visit to Wash- ington, D. C., came the worrying about final exams and then the carefree preparation for the Junior- Senior Prom. Commencement, with its air of solem- nity and dignity, concluded our four years. Our goal has been successfully reached. Fondly shall we always remember the hard work and com- panionship that combined to make such happy days for us at Kingston High School! These members, advised by Miss Murphy and Mr. lveson, decided that a school election was to be held for nominees for the presidency of the council. The requirements were that each nominee was to be a Senior and have a passing average. The five people who received the highest number of votes were considered the candidates. Each of these tive was given one chapel period in which to present his platform and to campaign in any other way he chose. On January 24 two voting machines were set up in the auditorium, and everyone was given the opportunity of voting for the candidate of his choice. Elliott Pritchard was chosen President. At the meeting the Council members voted among themselves tor the other officers. Although the council is still in its infancy, it has written its constitution, se- cured housing for 200 delegates who will come to Forty Fort's Student Council Convention this fall, and held a tree sport dance. After careful consideration the entire Senior Class elected those pictured on these pages to positions on the staff. This capable staff held a meeting early in the year in order to choose a yearbook cover, From this point on, the editorial staff worked diligently in order to gather information and write the editorials concerning sports, plays, and all other extra-curricular activities. After the material had. been checked by the English De- partment, the typing staff prepared it for the printer, then the business staff enthusiastically launched a campaign to sell our year- books. This was all done under the excellent supervision of Mr. Kohn, Mr. lveson, Mr. Wm. Morgan, Miss Cahalan, Mrs. Schulz and Miss Weis. We, the class of '52, sincerely hope that you may gain as much pleasure in reading this book as we have had working on it. May this yearbook be an everlasting link in your pleasant chain of memories! DAVID JONES This year the Kingston High School DEBATING TEAM, under the able direction of Mr. David Jones, will tackle the Question: Resolve That The American People Should Be Subiect To Con- scription ln Time Of War. The Contests will probably be held with Ashley, Hanover, and St. Mary's High School as they were last year. lt is the custom to hold duel debates, that is, while the affirmative of Kingston is debating with the negative opponent at Kingston, the negative of Kingston is debating with the af- firmative opponent at his school. In this way two separate debates are being held at the same time. The debating team this year expects a good season, for there are three experienced debators on the squad, and the three new members also appear to be very competent. Hi-V Advisor ,-,-,,-,AAYA .,.-,,. The playflhe Barretts of Wimpole Street,'was presented with professionalism. Every character was cast to perfection. ln fact the first production was so successful that the play was presented a second time. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who was drawn between the strange love of her father and the man she loved, was played by Barbara Fitch. Robert Browning, portrayed by Mike Lamade, pictured a man who understood only that he loved Elizabeth Barrett and that there was no reason why he couldn't have her. Edward Moulton-Barrett, played by Harold Friedman, represented a man who loved only one of his children and who wanted that love all to himself. A light of humor was Cast on the play by Octavius Barrett, the stuttering brother of the family, played by George Shinal. All the other players also helped to make this play a wonderful success. But of course this great production could not have been made if it were not for the patient direction of our own Marjorie Brown Thomas wg. i l i K sr First row, left to right: Michael Lamade, Patricia Stout, Dorothy Wallison, Barbara Fitch, Carol Ann Gardner, Linda Abbot, Second row: Joseph Petrovitz, Paul Gallagher, George Shinal, Richard Stein- hauer, Harold Friedman, James McHugh, Arthur Olack, Allan Rosenberg, ,Gy sv' ,funin Way 5 I 'I Laughter resounds through the auditorium, suspense causes breathless anticipation, and well-deserved applause bursts forth. This is the reaction of the audience at the Junior Play, Home Sweet Homicide, on February 9, 1952. The murder of a neighbor causes April, Archie, and Dina to become involved hunting the criminal, hiding the victir'n's husband from the police, and helping along a love affair between their mother, a mystery-story writer, and the handsome police lieutenant. The acting under the capable direction of Mrs. Maiorie Brown Thomas, and the set, a beautiful garden scene designed by Mr. Strunk, combined to make top-notch entertainment. W if i? 3' if X i Q . HENDERSON Director THE PIT BAND This is a mysterious group of musicians who are famous for not reporting to the homeroom in the morning! This causes the daily mystery of Where are they'? The answer is that they are in the auditorium getting ready to play for morning assembly. You see, this is one of their main duties which they must perform every morning. Also, the Pit Band plays for all class plays, pep sessions, and Commencement. As you can see, this band is made up of hard working members who are taken from the Concert or Marching Band. Despite its many trials and tribulations, the Pit Band has always played upon request and I am sure its music has been enioyed by all. THE MARCHING BAND Kingston High School Marching Band -here it comes! lt is a snappy example of marching musicians who strive to bring color, interest, and enioyment to our fall scholastic program and community parades. The entire band consists of approxi- mately ninety-four members, including the colorful color guards, maiorettes, and nine peppy, vivacious cheerleaders. This year something new has been added. They are Mina Coon and Rosemary Alexis, our very own fire twirlers who have thrilled the crowds at several fine performances. Eddie Greenwood with his hot iazz trumpet has kept up the spirit of the band. And with the smart rat-a-tat of our drum ranks everyone can hear the band approaching. The band is known throughout the valley as one of the finest looking organiza- tions not only because of its bright uniforms but also because of its excellent marching. Midway in August Coach Kopicki issued his call for football candidates to represent Kingston in the 1951 Gridiron season. After weeks of hard training and conditioning, they were ready for their first game. Swoyersville provided the opposition. After a hard fought first half, Kingston was finally beaten by a strong Swoyersville club. Kinsgton went on to win seven straight games. In the Plymouth game, Bellis was a standout running the opening kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown. Jim Mihal was instrumental in our win over Nanticoke by blocking two kicks. Bellis, while having an iniured ankle, entered the Meyers game and was responsible for the margin of victory for K.H.S. After leading throughout the G.A.R. game, the Huskies were beaten in the final minutes. Thanksgiving brought the annual Thanksgiving day game, between K.H.S. and Coughlin. After a bad start in the first quarter, the Huskies played them to a standstill but lost finally 14-7. Credit should be given to Coach Kopicki and assistants, Coach Reese, Coach Morgan and Coach Hilbert for their fine work. Kingston was given recognition by having Charles Skiptunas selected for the All-Scholastic team. FOOTBALL RECORD M R . Under the capable supervision of Coach Phil Morgan, who did a stellar iob this season, the team was rounded out within a few weeks. Also deserving praise is Coach Kopicki for his fine work with the Junior Varsity. This year's team was a high-scoring combination as the ll3e68 victory over Coughlin and the 94 points scored on Berwick shows. That 113-68 victory is a Wyoming Valley record and also tops the school record. The team lost some heart-breakers by two points but it doesn't tell the true story. Many thrilling games were played against Newport, Plymouth, and Nanti- coke. The Newport game, however, stands out as the most thrilling. It was not until the final minute of play did the Huskies pull through to triumph. The Huskies eliminated Newport from the conference championship in the first half of the flag race, then repeated' their performance by defeating Newport on their own floor, thus eliminating them from second half flag race honors. The five victories that followed were stepping-stones to that big match with their archrival Forty-Fort. The meet was expected to be one of those close heart- throbbing affairs but as it happened the Huskies breezed to an over-whelming 38-6 victory.
