Editorial E, the Senior Class of Kingston Memorial High School of 1934, have been educated and trained by our Community to the best of her ability. In doing this, our Community has fol- lowed the advice of Thaddeus Stevens, the Father of Free Education in Pennsylvania who said: lf education be of admitted importance to the people under all forms of government, and of unquestioned necessity when they govern themselves, it follows of course that its cultiva- tion and diffusion is a matter of public concern, and a duty which every government owes to its peoples. In accordance with this principle, our Commonwealth and our Community have not only given us this splendid education and training for our sake alone, but for their sakeg since the Community is usually judged by the people in it, and an excellent training and education always raises the standing and position of an individual. In educating and training us, our Community has fulfilled its duty to us, but now it is up to us to pay our debt to the Community by applying the principles that we have been taught. To do this, it would be well for us to study and apply the Oath which was taken by the young man of Athens when he had attained a certain age in training, and when the Elders of the City decided that it was now his duty to serve the Community. The Oath, briefly written, states: 'We will never bring disgrace on this, our City, by an act of dishonesty or cowardice. We will fight for the ideals of the City both alone and with many. We will revere and obey the City's laws, and will do our best to incite a like reverence and respect in those above us who are prone to annul them or set them at naught. We will strive increasingly to quicken the public's sense of civic duty. Thus in all these ways we will transmit this city, not only not less, but greater, better, and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us These four brief statements made by a people who advocated free education thousands of years ago, are the only rules we need to apply in serving and in paying our debt to our Community Athens was one of the ancient republics which were famous for their liberal education and the training of their youth Taking this and many other similar cities as examples, Thaddeus Stevens said Knowledge 15 the only foundation on which Republics stand The United States is a republic and therefore a well educated people is essential to its own well being Our forefathers have seen fit to make laws which have given us our training, and we as patriots and beneliciaries, have been educated to support our country We have also been educated so that we may be able to face Life with a background of knowledge and fight Life s battles more easily, and there 15 no reason why any one of us should ai A hundred years ago there was no free education or free schools Children who went to school and whose parents lacked the necessary funds to pay for their tuition were termed paupers children Education, at that time was a luxury which few could afford and not the important necessity of today Free Education its opponents stated, was an unnecessary expense to the people and an expense which provided no returns So great a reaction set in against education that a bill was passed which repealed the Common School Law of Pennsylvania But brilliant men, like the Hon Thaddeus Stevens, Governor Wolfe and Senator Samuel Breik fought this bill with all their strength and courage, so that the Act of 1834 providing for the organization of a system of Common Schools in Pennsylvania, was ratified a step which has not yet been regretted by the Commonwealth Students, educated with the few grains of knowledge of past generations have made a success of their lives Therefore why shouldnt we who have received instruction based upon years of research knowledge that we are bound to succeed? It IS true that the times have changed but where there s a will there s a way Let us remember the debt and service we owe our Community so that the Class of 1934 may be an example of civic loyalty in the annals of Kingston Lester M Saidman 15 img 'Y ',4.,fQrt A The KINGSTONIAN fe , erkffba, f if ,Ll ,...
