One applica- tion of the word means “‘an inscription in a book to a person in testimony of affection of respect’’-the Senior Class of 19841 has “dedicated” the Mliles- tones to Mrs. Susan Patterson, a very “dedicated” person-which is where the second “dedication” comes into use. “Dedication” in this second sense means the devoting of oneself wholly and earnestly to a cause. The shining attribute of Susan Patterson is her ‘““dedication’’ to Kings Mountain Senior High School. This curly-haired pixie of a person gets to school early and doesn’t mind working late. Along with the capable cooperation of Mrs. Mary Taylor, Susan Patterson has worked long and hard to make the Kings Mountain Senior High School newspaper, The Mountaineer an interesting, complete, and innova- tive source of news to the students. In order to provide money for the newspaper Mrs. Patterson has washed cars, sold cakes, conducted contests, held fashion shows, and even dressed up male stu- Dedication Mrs. Susan Patterson 1981 dents as female students. If her ““dedication’” ended there. that would be enough for a “dedication’’ award; but she does more. Susan was co-sponsor of the Muscular Dystro- phy Dance-a-thon last year, and did an excellent job.. She has entertained faculty members at her home and was always the gracious hostess. She even works to further her learning so that she can be better informed, which in turn will help her stu- dents. Perhaps the best example of Susan Patterson's “dedication” is in the classroom. She is sincerely concerned about all of her students and will do everything she can to help someone who comes to her for assistance. Mrs. Patterson is concerned with more than a person's performance in class. She worries about a student’s problems, dilemmas, and gripes in order to determine how she can best teach her students how fo learn. Because of all her dedication the Senior Class of 1981 is proud to dedicate the 1981 Milestones to Mrs. Susan Patterson. This year’s annual is one that we hope you all will enjoy. Through its pages we hope to bring back the memories of the 4980-841 school year, whether they are good or bad. Much work has gone into this year’s book and we hope you will appre- ciate all the hard work that has been put into it. We thought that movies are so much a part of a teenager's life, that a ‘movie theme would be fun to work with and would be enjoyed by all. Before school even starts, stu- dents are busy. Summer school, band practice, and football prac- tice are only a few of the things being started. Then the day comes: school starts. Classes are begun, clubs organized, and teams formed. The first of the school year is a busy time; the start of a suc- cessful year. After that first day, all activities get into full swing. First comes vol- leyball and girls tennis, and the fa- vorite sport of them all-football. The first pep rally is held and the Mountie spirit fills the school with ex- citement. Soohomores and Juniors look forward to many pep rallies to come and Seniors look forward to memories they will never forget. ee, Spirit Week ... the most awaited week of the fall season. Students dress in all fashions to show their spirit. This year students from all organizations helped to construct five floats to be in the Bicentennial Homecoming Parade. As usual, students showed their insurmountable spirit by participat- ing in all spirit week activities. “(on rye ‘pe ‘WAN woconanlet BARAK 7 KY AY I, | ‘ 10 Looking back over the year, re- member when you were looking through the microscope and you thought you had crushed the slide?, or in Chemistry when you studied for two hours and came to find out it was the wrong chapter? In choir when you weren’t looking at the director and everyone stopped singing except you? Or in Home Ec when you were having someone model your pants so you could get the hem just perfect?, and it slipped, causing that person to avoid you the whole year? Or in Cosmotology when you were go- ing to ‘work on” areal person, and you spilled everything all over them. Remember what a typical day was like? Fighting the morning traffic jam when you are already 15 minutes late, seeing your friends between classes and not having enough time to catch up on the latest gos- sip, then when the last bell finally rings, you want to stay around and talk, even though you said you couldn‘t wait to get out. 14 = Af LOO Hi aA 1 CAMPANEY BATTLE ieeurr Lsniaera Bas ; : : . y TOMMY oohs ae | Looking back-remembering the school year-you can’t help thinking, ‘Well, may- be this year wasn’t so bad!”’ Seeing your- self and your friends-laughing, crying, and smiling-will always make you remember the good times. senior Ifems Times of Your Life Good morning, yesterday; You wake up, and time has slipped away. And suddenly it’s hard to find the memories you left behind, remember. Do you remember the laughter and the tears, the shadows of misty yester years? The good times and the bad you've seen, and all others in between, remember. Do you remember the times of your life? Reach back for the joy and the sorrow, put them away in your mind; For mem'ties are the times that you borrow. To spend when you get to tomorrow. Here comes the setting sun; The seasons are passing one by one. So gather moments while you may; collect the dreams you dream today, remember. Will you remember the times of your life? Exhibiting leadership, the Senior Class of ‘81 has set examples for the underclass- men at KMSHS to follow. They have cheered our teams on through defeats and victories. Their spirit and enthusiasm have caught on at pep rallies and enliv- ened the student body. This fun-filled, busy year included the his- toric Bicentennial celebration of the Battle of Kings Mountain in which students were actively involved. The Homecoming Pa- rade became part of a mammoth Bicen- tennial Parade on a memorable holiday for everyone, October 7. The usual worries about college appli- cations, SAT scores, exams, report cards, Class rank are now in the past. Friends will soon go their various ways-some to col- lege, some to jobs, some to military ser- vice, leaving behind high school memories of football games, dates, proms, club meetings, and other activities that have made KMSHS a cherished part of their lives. Most class members have already made decisions about their goals in life. With a show of maturity, they are ready now to take the next step that will lead them to these goals. We feel so much older and important as the underclassmen look to us for examples. As seniors we also imitate the classes before us, demanding more senior priviledges, griping at the unfairness of authority, maybe raising a little too much hell, but most of all, trying to make our last year at KMSHS the best ever. We go through our final year saying, “This is our last half-time show, our last bonfire, our last time to participate in a sport as a student, our last cheer, our last pep rally, our last prom, and the final time we sing, “Dear ole KM High we love thee ...” at graduation. Most of us are glad to be leaving, but we will miss all the activities of high school. Seniors, trying to make the good times last as long as possible, may neglect school work. We are tired of working; this is a year to enjoy! The bad experiences which have made us grow and the happy times we've shared will remain with us forever. We have so many memories of friends, parties, dances, games, and the wonderful education we have received. We want to remember them all. With this annual we will be able to look back. The carefree spirit of the Class of ‘82 has evi- denced itself in several ways. Swelling the halls with their jollity and laughter, the largest class yet to enter KMSHS came bounding in ready to ex- pend their energy on activities awaiting them. Members of the class helped to project the base- ball team in 1980 to the State finals. As juniors, they raised more money for the prom than any other class. Even their class president won the title of “Miss Mountaineer” in a male beauty con- test sponsored by the school newspaper. As they look forward to their senior year, they face it determined to keep the school spirit glowing that they have already helped to generate. August through September, Friday nights are reserved for football games. All through the week preparations are made; players, band members cheerleaders practice, pep rallies are held to boost every- one’s spirit. Seasons change and the sport is different, moving the year along. The dreaa- ed magazine sale is soon underway prepar- ing for the long-awaited Jr.-Sr. Prom. Each year the traditions are handed down to the next class, hoping they can cope with the responsibility passed on to them. Sometimes we were targets of the juniors’ and seniors’ ridicule and scorn. At first angered but later determined to find our place in a new setting, we soon be- came a part of the Mountaineer life. Few teams in the state other than our own could boast a 21-41 record, a conference title, and a trip to the District tournament. Some of the games were close (51-50 over Shel- by) and some weren't (100-48 over East Rutherford) but all were exciting. Carl Smith’s imaginative fast- break layups and Gerald Byer’s tremendous slam dunks exhilarated the crowd. You could always count on Demetris Goode for the rebound and noone in the conference had the shooting touch of Terrence Blalock or Paul Ingram. Even though our team was overflowing with tal- ent, they still had to be coached. This job fell to John Blalock. He worked the team hard everyday and disciplined them well. We would like to give our highest praise to Coach Blalock for the fine job he has done. Graduation should not hurt the Mounties in next year’s quest for glory. Many of our top players are returning and some very talented players will be coming up from the J.V. team. The ball bounced; first on the front of the rim, then on the back. After what seemed to be a decade, the ball fell through the net and pandemonium struck. The score- board read 69-67. The Mounties had done what seemed to be impossible. January 6 was a night to remember. The R-S Central Hilltoppers were the defending state 3-A champions. They had won 43 games in a row and were one of the top high school basketball teams in the nation. The Moun- ties did not seem to be intimidat- ed by Central's apperance on paper though. The Mounties set their sights to the R-S game early in the season. They practiced very hard and this dedication payed off in the end. The Mounties wre underdogs going into the game, but they played head to head with the state champs and the score see-sawed back and forth. With 20 seconds left, the score was knotted at 67 all. The Mounties called time out with about 10 seconds on the clock. Play soon resumed and with just 6 seconds remaining, Carl Smith drove the lane and shot with that magic touch that only Smitty has. The shot dropped in and it became obvious that our team was for real. . . This group of young men finished with a 19-1 record and won the conference title for the second straight year. Our jayvee team was just that, a team. If one player had an off day, others were their to take up the slack. Coach McDowell had two very ca- pable point guards in David Peeler and Jimmy Brown, who came down from the varsity team. The Mounties also had a strong inside game, thanks to Avery Grier, David Hager, and Frank Parker. Despite an overtime loss to R-S Central, the Mounties play was unequalled by any team in the conference and they proved themselves to be Number 1. But Inexperience Shows In recent years, Kings Mountain‘s wrestling program has been on the rise. Much of this success can be attributed to the team’s outstanding coach, Steve Moffitt. This year though, it became obvious that last year’s graduation had taken its toll. The Mounties had six first year starters and had to forfeit three of the thirteen weight classes. Even with this shortage of manpower, the Mounties won their first four matches, all at home. The Mounties didn’t seem to excel on the road though, and wound up with a 4-4 record. As always, there were a few outstanding single perform- ers. Bernard Womic won the Gaston Invitational Tourna- ment and went into the conference tournament with only one loss. Bernard avegned this loss and went on to take the conference title, his second in two years. We expect Ber- nard to have a high ranking in the state at the end of the season. Joey Wyte also had a fine season. Although ham- pered by an injury early in the year, Joey came on strong and won the conference championship in the 105 lb. class. Jimmy Watkins and Tommy Welch adjusted very well from the Junior High program and have already proven them- selves as great assets to the team. It doesn’t seem that graduation will hit the Mounties as hard this year, and with a fine crop of Junior High wrestlers coming up, the Mounties should rebound to the top ... again! Lady Netters “Net” 9-3 Season Kings Mountain’s Lady Netters had another great season this year under the outstanding coaching of Mr. Ed Guy. During February the young ladies of our track team started getting in shape for the season to come. Low participation will hurt our team though. Very few girls came out for the team and this will probably hurt their chances at a high finish in the conference meet. Since track is technically an individual sport something should be said of the people involved. Kathy Stamey is a returning miler and Sheryl Goode is strong in the high jump. NOTTTA Ta TERRY BamicninOk ER _paH! 74 1P- A-DEF —poo As the school year approaches, one tends to reflect on the events that have taken place during the year. Football, basketball, dates and the prom are alll in the past and they blend into one pre- cious memory. But thoughts are not all on the past; Seniors are looking forward to graduation, the beach and college; Juniors look forward to summer vaca- tion and being seniors and Sophomores just look forward to being. 211 The end of the year is filled with many activities for Seniors. The Senior class play, Junior-Senior Prom, Awards Day, cap and gown pictures, Senior picnic, baccalaureate service and finally gradu- ation are only a few. For many it may be the last time they see their class- mates, but for others they may see each other in a daily school routine at college or maybe at a place of employment, however, May 29, 1984, will be the final day they know each other as stu- dents of KMSHS. This will be goodbye. . me es: es wy St ah” me My statistics And Thanks The 1980-81 edition of the Milestones is once again published by the Josten’s American Year- book Company; the third year that Kings Mountain Senior High School has had their yearbook published by this prestigious company. The Milestones con- tract falls under the Cameo program. Our yearbook isa 9 X 12 inch size book with a sewed binding and a rounded and backed spine. Seven hundred copies of the Milestones were ordered and the annual contains 216 pages. The base ink color is black which is printed on Dull 199 paper. As in the past the Milestones contains two multiples of type C color. The cover of the Milestones is a custom silk- screen. The artwork was done by Mrs. Diane Harper, art teacher at Kings Mountain Senior High School. The base color of the cover is Black 535 with the applied color being Pale Gold 328. The endsheets are Gold Dust 286 and the stamped names are in Gold Foil 380. The original contract was signed by Keith Math- ews. Our representative for this year, however, was Mr. W.D. “Dee” Ferrell. The Milestones staff would like to take this opportunity to thank both Josten’s American Yearbook Company and Mr. Dee Ferrell for an excellent job and outstanding service. It is fittingly apropos that the theme of this year’s annual is movies, considering that the Oscar nomi- nations have just been announced as | write this. Putting together a high school annual is an extreme- ly difficult task, and without the help of some unself- ish and talented people, this production would have been impossible. So | would like to announce my own Oscars as a way of saying “Thank You”’. Diane Harper receives the Oscar for Best Art and Art Director. She contributed the artwork for the cover and supervised the Senior Art. There was a tie for the Best Photography Oscar-between I.G. Alex- ander and Gary Stewart. Mr. Alexander always turns out quality work at a moments notice, he gives us excellent advice, and he is always pleasant to work with. Gary Stewart gave our own photog- raphers a short course in darkroom management and he never hesitated to loan us pictures. The Milestones could not have been produced without the invaluable help of these two gentlemen. There are several Oscars for best supporting role- an annual needs all the support it can get. | would like to thank the following for their supportive roles: The merchants of Kings Mountain, who help defray expenses; the Superintendent of Kings Mountain District Schools-Mr. Bill Davis, who provided some ia 4 le . 4 5 Nu OR ( gota AS Sel in e - iy dark room materials for the staff; the faculty of KMSHS who had to put up with interruptions and missing students; Mrs. Juanita Goforth, who pro- vided excellent copy on less than a moment's no- tice; the photographers, who got a lot of criticism and very little support from me; Mr. Robert L. Brad- ley, who helped the Homecoming Court get their picture made in court, and finally, the Milestones staff who sold ads, annuals, and popcorn and even helped put the book together. The last Oscars go to Kim Dixon and Dennis Ca- veny for their role as Best Directors. Kim has always been a tremendous help and | could not have made it through this year with out her help. Her “niceness” is a glowing tribute to her personality. And then there’s Dennis. He does a good job of being tall and losing pens but more importantly he has been a tremendous help throughout his three years on the annual staff. Whether he was drawing a layout in three minutes or working in the conces- sion stand, he always did an excellent job. This year he was saddled with a great responsibility and he “performed” well. I'll miss these two outstanding performers-thanks for a job well done JRR yee ae M4 PTGS piece xiluch Rr be , After several months of waiting the 1984 edition of Milestones is out. We hope that all the students here will enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed working on it. The theme of this year’s annual, mov- ies, is one we hope you can all identify with. After all, we are only the characters in the movie of life. We hope that all of you have been captured ‘on screen” in this book either by being in a club, screaming your lungs out at a pep rally, marching in the band, playing in a football game, or just clown- ing around with your friends. It seems like only yes- terday when we nervously arrived for our first day in elementary school. How can twelve years, espe- cially the last three, go by so fast? We hope you will look through this annual sometime in the future and remember the good times of 1984. | would like to take this opportunity to thank sev- eral people who have helped make this annual a success. First, | would like to say thanks to Mr. |.G. Alexander for his time in taking and developing Our color section and club pictures, all my teachers for letting me out of class “to go work on the annual”, the photographers for doing such a good job, the staff for their time and efforts which are shown on the preceeding pages and for putting up with me for nine months, Mrs. Carol Ann Peeler for being such a good friend and teacher, Elizabeth for her undy- ing support and friendship, Kim for being a terrific assistant, neighbor, and friend, Mr. Joe Rountr ee, without whose leadership, advice,-and friendship | could never have made it, and Lynn for always being there. To all these people, thanks. - — -_ — a i a CRIA tins . i Fi WE a S
