Although he is known by many names, some NOt TOO pleasanr, he is usually referred to as Froney. His job is a difficult one. He is the one who has to discipline the class cut-up, the fighter, the truancies, and the tardies. He rarely gets to compliment a good performance, outstanding behavior, or hard worl. Froney is the one who hears the irate parents complain, explains why the bus driver was too early, too late, or nor there af all, and who won't believe the most believable excuse. Although some people can’t spell or even say his name correctly, they respect him and appreciate his efforts toward helping students stay in school, solve problems, and plan for the future. Because of Froney’s helping hand and his easy-going manner, the Milestones staff, the Senior Class, and the student body would like to congratulate him on a job well done. “They say that life is a highway, and its milestones are the years’’. The years you spend ar Kings Mountain Senior High School, though they seem like they'll never end, are only three small milestones along the highway of your life. Compared to the length of the highway, these milestones are very brief periods of time, which can become merely blurred memories. This year's Milestones would like to keep those memories clear and fresh, so that in ten years, when you thumb through this publication, you can once again live in the world of your high school years. Here YOU will see pictures of friends, important events, and the Milestones you will always cherish. A great deal of time and work has gone into this year's edition of the Milestones. Producing an entire yearbook is not as easy as some people believe it to be. Deadlines have to be mer, layouts drawn, pictures taken, final layouts drawn, copy written, pictures posted on MSTC boards, and the material proofread and mailed. There is also the tedious taslk of counting votes for Senior Items and the difficulty of keeping Dedication a secret. Another problem, is dealing with some people who are dissatisfied with that “icky ’ picture of themselves going into the Annual. One more responsibility the annual staff has, is to keep the price of the Annual as low as possible to the students. We keep this cost down by selling ads to businesses. We hope you enjoy our work. i : : : Milestones .. . Important events in our high school years. The Junior-Senior Prom, the Senior Play, and finally Graduation. All of these are ending milestones for the Senior Class. Summer football practice, band prac- tice, and Senior portraits, these are miles- tones thar mark the beginning of another year. Endings, and beginnings Milestones ... Walking out and away from the school, looking out into the distance, seeing the football stadium — a place where school spirit swells, and students are drawn closer together as they cheer for a common goal. Suddenly, the band strikes UP a Tune as the stands fill with people. As the football players storm the field, the fans jump from their seats clapping wildly and cheering. Banners, tacked up behind the bleachers, stream across the stadium urging the team to Gol Fight! Win! Stand Up and Cheer! Each school day presents students with a regular series of classes, teachers, and a new clutch of memories to store. So many things to study and learn, but finally there's a pep rally where students can let themselves go and scream, chant, and laugh to their hearts’ content. The confetti, the shine of the band’s horns, the faces, the posters, all blur into a wonderfully warm memory that may be kept always. wit ee a lid ily Milestones . .. The memories of school — home- work, teachers, clubs, foorball games, and friends — these milestones will always be with us. Perhaps in time, the memories will fade or be distorted by time, bur they will always be there. These milestones will influence us — for good or bad — for the rest of our lives. The memories might not all be pleasant, but we would rather have these memories, good or bad, than never to have known them ar all. 454 sae a ay AS t SBN ng Si Pe NES Be REESE Rater ea te Tasca CI 16 Senior Ifems Class Colors: Black And Gold Class Flower: Red Rose Class Song: Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) Class Motto: Times May Be More Beautiful, But This One Is Ours cas THEME FROM MAHOGANY (Do you know where you're going to?) For ex- ample, it is the last class required to take Contemporary US History or Studies as Seniors and the last class requiring only 13 units to graduate. Ir is also the first class requiring the Competency Test for gradu- ation, the first class to graduate under Bob McRae, the first class to graduate in the new decade, and the first class in several years fo be required to take final exams unless exempted by an A or B average or perfect attendance second semester. IN 1962, when most members of the Class of 1980 were born, John F. Kennedy was President of the US. Now, as. this class's graduation approaches, his brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, has an- nounced his presidential candidacy. Also in 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth. Now, Ameri- cans are having difficulty finding enough gasoline to make it around the block, and the price of gasoline, which was 29¢ in 1962, is now up to 99¢ average. The Senior Class Officers are Laura McGinnis — President, Leslie Hambright — Vice-President, Janet Childers — Secre- tary, Eric Barnett — Treasurer. oS ae ee? ts ” rk ee) Dp. reg bar Ua take t J BPR oS NES 7 tga: SPOR LR ea ORS SOR . 20 Seniors Brenda Adams Debbie Appling Wayne Adams Teresa Baggett Tammy Adcock Bryan Baker Dale Barnett Sherry Barnett David Alexander Pam Ball Eric Barnett Sranley Barrett 22 Tracy Baumgardner Rita Beatry Kathy Belk Beverly Bell Bobby Bell Carol Bennerr Reta Bennett Susan Bennett Lee Bickley Billy Biggers Karen Blackwell Ina Blanton Keith Blanton Kim Blanton Nina Blanton Penny Blanton Sandy Blanton Robbie Bolin Pam Bolton Ernst Borchert Miles Boyce, nor pictured Robert Bradley Carla Bridges Daryl Brown Duane Brown Tommy Buchanan Debbie Bumgardner Andrew Burris Carl Burton Billy Campbell Curtis Camp A Scott Cabiniss Jeff Campbell Jerry Camp a — 24 Jeff Cannova Glenn Carroll Lisa Carroll Sonali Carson Robin Cash Mike Chambers ee Ee eS ager | Ricky Chapman Janet Childers Ronnie Chapman Sandy Childers Sharon Chapman Melany Clark Jeff Cloninger Jeannette Costner Wynn Crawford Ann Conner Scott Crawford Kenny Curry, not pictured Valerie Curry | 2 Marl Deaton, Jeff Dixon nor pictured Audie Duncan Vickie Curry David DeVane Rex Dye Bobby Davis Eric Dixon Rhonda Echols Sharon Edwards John Estes Donna Farris, nor pictured Vickie Feemster Lisa Fortenberry Scott Fredell Todd Friday Gary Gibbons Kim Gladden Andrena Goode Rodney Gorden Ann Grant Sharon Greason Martha Greene Mickey Gregory, not pictured Gladys Grier Donnie Griffin Tricia Griffin Dennis Grigg Kenny Guinn, not pictured Jeff Guyton Lanny Guyton Kristen Hagen Henry Hager Delk Haigler Karen Hallman David Hambright Leslie Hambright Todd Hambrighr Lindsay Hamm Lisa Hampron Kay Hanna Ann Harbison Cathy Hargett, not pictured Lyn Hayes, nor pictured Lori Heavener Jeff Heinbacls Newr Henson Roy Hipps Donna Holman Kenny Horne Karla Howell Mark Howell Mike Howell Randy Howell Susan Howze Tina Hughes Mark Hullender Ruth Hullender Sherri Hullender Sophia Hunter Robin Hurdr Chris Huskey, nor pictured Mary Huskey Sharon Huskey James Huskey DS Tae Jeff. This Junior Class will be the first class required to have 15 units to graduate as well as the first to take Contemporary US History Studies in the ‘1th grade. However, these Juniors will also follow some of the traditions of past classes. They will experience the joys of ordering those all-important class rings, and the trauma of attending their first Jr.-Sr. Prom. Often it seems thar Juniors are caught in the middle, never being first, seldom being last. Bur these Juniors, like all Juniors before them, will live through this difficult year and become the Seniors of 1981. The Sophomores will encounter many new experiences upon entering high school. First day jitters, drivers’ ed., seniors, mid- term exams, and tough teachers are just a few of the burdens Sophomores must shoulder. This Sophomore Class, like all classes before them will contribute to the rotal success of the high school. Making the transition from the junior high to the high school is a major step in a student's life and we of the annual staff believe thar they have made the transition well. Here is a brief profile of Kings Mountain Senior High's new principal. Mr. McRae received his B.A. in history from Wake Forest and his Masters in Education at Appalachian. He larer received his Advanced Administration certificate at UNC-CH. When asked how he would evaluate his first six months here at Kings Mountain, he replied that he was pleased with the school’s progress so far. Mr. McRae said he would like to become more familiar with the school and its problems before making any major changes. However, he feels that our school is a ‘well-rounded and sound educational institution’’ and does not foresee hav- ing to make any drastic changes in the near furure. Mr. McRae said he was quite impressed with the great percentage of people, both teachers and students, who appear to be interested and concerned about their school. He believes the spirit here at KMSHS is one of the high school’s biggest assets. Questioned about areas needing improvement McRae stated that offerings for the academically talented students needed to be increased at KMSHS. He also said that the faculty, school board, and students need to place into writing some policies about aspects of school life for a point of reference. Mr. McRae was then asked about his goals for KMS HS. He hopes to “coordinate the building of a better program for : students to develop themselves,’’ and create more opportu- nities for the individual. He also feels that the overall aca- demic program needs to be strengthened. We will follow the progress of both Mr. McRae and KMSHS in the future with great interest! Wendy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Stringfellow, and is active in school activities. She is the captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, a member of the turorial pro- gram and sports editor of the annual staff. The fact thar the students of Kings Mountain chose Wendy Stringfellow as their Homecoming Queen for 1979 exhibits their good taste. Tina Ware, Cathy McDaniel, Wendy Stringfellow, Donna Myers, Julie Owens ah, Homecoming Activities Many exciting events happen during the week of Home- coming. One of these exciting events was the Friday after- Noon pep rally in which students and teachers alike partici- pated. : After the pep rally some students left to pur final fouches on their floats and others went home to prepare for the 1979-80 Homecoming Parade. After the parade, fans, students and spectators went home to get ready for the showdown between Kings Mountain and South Point. The Homecoming activities were highlighted by the crowning of Wendy Stringfellow, our Homecoming Queen. Powder Puff — Football? The 1979 Powder Puff foorball game, sponsored by the Beta Club of KMSHS, was the second game in what is hoped will be a lasting tradition here at KM. The game, which was a contest be- tween the Juniors and Seniors, ended with a score of 12-0 in favor of the Seniors. The two touchdowns were achieved by the combined efforts of Karen Blackwell passing and Trudy Whisnant receiving. Way to go Seniors! 105 Nights On Broadway This year’s Junior-Senior Prom was a wonderfully unique experience. As you walked through the front doors of the high school you imag- ined yourself on the streets of New Yorl City with the signs of Broadway plays and chasing lights through the breezeway. As you entered into the com- mons area you were engulfed by the sound of the Time Square Band. After listening to the band, you made your way fo the cafeteria and were amazed at how the cafe- teria had changed into a dazzling dining room with white tablecloths and the soft glow of candlelighr. The Junior-Senior Prom was a night of dreams for you and your special date. A wonderful milestone in your life. Carrousel Princess And Nominees A big event every year in Charlotte is the Thanksgiving Carrousel Parade. For one girl this will hold a special place in her memory. During the summer, the cheer- leaders attend camp where they learn the latest cheers, chants, and dances. One of the principal duties of the (ela =y=14| 10 10-16 KOM ©)£0)(0 = = elliaremerare) inspiring pep rallies. The most memora- ble pep rallies was the one in which the cheerleaders portrayed each of the football coaches and captains on the “NFL Today.”’ In one skit Mr. McRae sat on top of a ladder, and as the students yelled louder and louder, Marty climbed each rung of the ladder with a pie in her hand. When she reached the top, she smeared his face with the Sticky pie. In their final game of the season, the Mountaineers shut our archrival Shelby with a score of 27-0. This victory left the Mounties’ overall record at 8-2. This victory over Shelby, in which each and every Mountie played his heart out, was the break in a line of Shelby over KM games. The Mountaineer attack, which kept the Shelby of- fense on the sidelines, also accumulated 368 yards, and only allowed Shelby to have the ball for 6 minutes and 6 seconds in the entire first half. - InN a contest where the momentum shifred constantly, the South Point Red Raiders, (who went on to win the North Carolina 3-A Conference Championship), beat the Moun- taineers 15-12. 3 Yet the Raiders had all they could handle with the determined Mounties, who had their own play-off hopes jolted when an interception in the last rwo minutes killed a threar inside the Raider 10. After giving their all, losing the game was a big let- down for the Mounties. Coaches Generate Enthusiasm In his second year as head foorball coach, Dan Brooks brings another enthusiastic corps of coaches to the Kings Mtn. football program; Bob Jones, David Brinkley, and Steve Fos- ter. As head mentor of K.M.'s grid squad, Brooks has established a 13-7 record. He didn't even play football his sophomore year, and probably never would have if head foorball coach Dan Brooks hadn't seen him playing J-V basketball. Brooks was impressed. He spoke with Kevin Mack and the next year Mack began his foorball career. Kevin Mack went on to set three rushing records af KMHS and to receive the MVP award his senior year. He is now being scouted by many major universities. After being beaten by Burns, the 3-A division Mounties came back to roll over 4-A Ashbrook 23-0. 1979 MOUNTIE CAPTAINS The Captains of the 1979 Mountie grid- ders are seniors Glenn Carroll (right) and Johnny Ross. Elected by their teammates, both are held in the highest respect by the players, coaches, and entire stu- dent body. 151 JN's Spark Enthusiasm And Show Promise What would a school’s athletic program be without Junior Varisty teams? It probably wouldn't be very good. Junior Varsity teams train athletes and give them the knowledge they need to participate in Varsity sports. That is exactly what our JV football team and cheerleaders have proven. The football ream was young and started off slowly this year, bur by the end of the season it showed much improvement and became a fine competitor. Coached by Charlie Burns, the JV's record was 2-4-1. Spirited and enthusiastic, the JV cheerleaders show much promise also. One could always see them cheering in rain or shine, NO matter how cold the weather was. Patty Strong serves as captain of the squad, and Mrs. Susan Patterson is the sponsor. The JV teams don't receive the glory and honor as varsity teams, but if there were no JV teams, the younger players wouldn't gain the experience they need. Rather, they would have to sit on the bench and watch the older players. 152 Front row: Patty Strong, Cindy Weaver and Ann Ballard; Back row: Tammy Barrer, Lori Scruggs, Sonya Smith, Debbie Sayers and Marty Clemmer. Bernard (pictured af right) ran two miles in addition to Coach John Blalock’s daily workout of abour three or four miles a day. Bernard was named all conference this year and placed fifth in the entire SWC. The cross country team didn’t place first this year in many meets but they fought hard and usually — were among the top contenders. Although this year’s cross country team only won one meet our of five, Coach John Blalock is predicting improvement in the coming year. Coach Blalock commented on the lack of sophomores participating in cross country and thar tenth ‘graders are needed to develop experience for their more important junior and senior years. An example i s Bernard Womic, the only runner to begin in his sophomore year. He was ranked fifteenth in the Sectionals in this his junior year and was all conference both years. “Marathon” At A Steady Pace . MSs oR, Front row: Ricky Procter, Bernard Womic, Robbie Lovelace. Back row: Lanny Guyton, Terry Odums, Eric Moore, Eric Dixon. Volleyball: Bump, Set, Spikes! A Winning Season The 1979 Volleyball ream was one of the most respected teams in the SWC. The team consisted of many outstanding players. One of these fine i ox: players was Debbie Appling, who was nominated for all conference. Another outstanding performer on the team was Diane Williams who was selected player of the year in the SWC. Finally, the team coach, Kathy Brooks, was selected co-winner of the SWC Volleyball Coach of the Year award. This was a special honor for Coach Brooks because it was her first year as volleyball coach. The team’s record was 10 wins and 6 losses. ti i ‘y i) ‘ } ae Front Row: Leslie Hamrick, Lisa Crawford, Cindy Sutherland, Jennifer Campbell, Edie Potter, Leslie Sherrer. The new coach of the Kings Mountain Girls’ Basketball Team introduced a change in practice procedures. Mr. David Brinkley didn't change his own style of coaching just because he is now working with females. He stresses discipline and hard work in the daily practice sessions. The girls respect him as a basketball coach and are trustworthy of his knowledge of the sport. Their team is young bur the hard practices and play show. A close player-coach relationship keeps the team enthusiastic. As they wind up the season with an 8-11 record Coach Brinkley and his players hope to dominate in tournament play. Coaches and fans have commented on Chery! Goode’s ability to dominate under the basket. Her type of performance has proven thar she is a capable center and an asset to the team. Two other outstanding Juniors are Diane Williams and Bridget Glass. They demonstrated their ability many times over by their hustle and intensity on the court. Kim Gladden and Debbie Appling are two outstanding Seniors who will be missed for their leadership, experience, and talent. Future success will depend on the returning players. Two promising sophomore players are Angie Bell and Tammy Bolton. Coach Brinkley’s hopes for next year are continued improvement. Above left: Diane Williams drives for the basket. Above: Cheryl Good hauls down another rebound. Below: Coach Brinkley discusses strategy during a timeout. Bottom: Bridget Glass and Cheryl Goode await the tip off to begin action. This year the Girls’ J.V. Basketball team weathered a frustrating 3-7 record. Although disappointed, Coach Bumgardner commented that “we could have just as easily been 7 and 3. We lost four games by no more than four points.’’ Regardless of the record this year’s team received valuable experience and training in fundamental skills which will better prepare them for varsity competition. In his three years as wrestling coach, Mr. Sreve Moffitt has proved to be truly outstanding. The matmen have won the conference champion- ship every year since he began coaching here. While watching him coach at matches, one can see that Mr. Moffitt is whole-heartedly concerned with each of his wrestlers. He doesn't just sit in a chair showing encouragement for certain wres- tlers; he usually stands, and jumps, and shouts well-founded strategy for each individual wres- tler. The team thinks Mr. Moffitt is GREAT. reve say, ‘He's the best coach in the SWC. He ‘learns’ you. He puts it into words you can understand. Nor only did the team win the conference and state sectional championships, many of the wrestlers are expected to go as far as the state finals. Johnny “Knot’’ Ross and Jeff Rowell, both seniors, remained un- defeated all season, and Knot was voted ‘SWC Wrestler of the Year.” Two other seniors also did a good job, Avery Smith lost only one match, and Maurice Jamerson only lost two. In addition to his fine sea- son, Maurice was named “‘outstand- ing wrestler’’ at the state sectionals. Mr. Moffitt said thar the wrestler’s hard work and desire to learn helped the team a great deal. Also the fact that seven of the wrestlers were seniors, and that he had some good sophomores on the team; was decisive in the season's eminent out- come. Probably the most exciting match was the one against Ashbrook, a 4- A school, whose wrestlers were ranked second in North Carolina. KM won the match 24-23. Jeff Rowell’s pin was the only one of the match. Overall, the wrestlers recorded a 9-1 regular season. They are expect- ed fo go on fo greater things in post- season play. KM Grappler shoots a half. Kevin Mack, Mirion White, Kenny Womic, and Robert Bradley are just a few of the top performers on the track team. Coach Steve Foster is encouraged by his team’s performance so far. Coach Barry Gibson's baseball Mountaineers are expect- iINg A promising season with 11 players returning from last year's outstanding team, which was beaten in the final game of the conference championship series. The team that beat the Mounties eventually took the state runner-up title. The 1980 Mounties are looked upon as one of the teams to beat, along with Burns and South Poin. Strong defense and pitching should be the key to the Mounties success. Ace lefthander Tim Leach will head the starting mound staff. Ricky Proctor and Jeff Cloninger are other starters. Junior Todd Blalock and Sophomores Robert Anderson, Kevin Jones, and Scott Shaw will also assist the hurlers. Senior Lyn Hayes will give the Mounties good defense behind the plate. Terry Chapman will be the reserve catch- er. Eric Dixon will play first base, with Ricky Chapman at second, and Tony Boyce at third. Mike Spears will be at the shortstop position. : Proctor may also play some at first base and in the outfield. Brent Bell will be the back-up at second base, Terry Bullock behind Spears, and Alan Van Dyke will play reserve af third. Mark Schuman and Eric Moore are likely starters in left and center field. Spears, Cloninger and Proctor should share in the right field duties. Coach Gibson is assisted by Bud Bumgardner whose experience and knowledge have proved valuable. Front: Rusty Bumgardner, Tommy Leach, Terry Chapman, Tony Boyce, Terry Bullock, Brent Bell, Alan Van Dyke, Ricky Leach, and Robert Anderson. Back: Ricky Chapman, Todd Blalock, Mark Schuman, Kevin Jones, Timmy Leach, Jeff Cloninger, Eric Dixon, Scott Shaw, Eric Moore, Ricky Proctor, Lyn Hayes, and Mike Spears. 177 Despite Below — ‘‘Par’’ Weather, Golf Team Putt-ers Along Perhaps the most difficult aspect of preparing a golf team for the Spring matches is not hours of grueling practice or scouting your opponent, but working around the weather. One day is typically spring with flowers blooming as the sun shines. The next day is typically winter with people sledding on the golf course rather than practicing approach shots or putting. Despite the erratic weather Kings Mountain's golf team must be doing something right. In their first match against Chase, Crest, and Burns, Kings Mountain was the winner by 45 shots. Sammy Wolfe was medalist at 80, and a greatly improved Dexter Tate was second at 84. Kings Mountain's team is quided by a capable golfer in Coach Bob Jones. And with weather permitting the KM golfers should prove thar they can putt-er around with the best. Below, kneeling: David Rhea, Lee Neisler, Jimmy Bumgardner, Chucky Adams. P80ee 1288s The Milestones staff has tried to capture all the emotions, events, and memories of the 1979-1980 school year and compile them into this year’s annual. We hope you grasp the meaning behind our theme, milestones. We spent countless hours agonizing over this theme. Because the school year 1979-1980 represents the end of a decade and the beginning of another, we felt that milestones would provide us with the means fo relive our memories and to anticipate our dreams. The editors would like to take this opportunity to thank the annual staff for all their hard work; the students and teachers for their cooperation; and the local businesses for their financial support, all of which helped make the publication of this book a success. We would also like to express our appreciation to Mr. |.G. Alexander for the giving of his time and efforts throughout the year. He didn’t even complain when he was forced to leave his warm classroom to walk to the Junior High on those cold, winter mornings to take club pictures. And last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank Mr. Rountree for being there when we needed him, and sometimes when we didn’t. Without his constructive criticism, undying sarcasm, and enduring patience, the completion of this book would not have been possible. The design on the front endsheet is a blind embossed graphic representation of Kings Mountain using the word MILESTONES, which was also done by Kristen Hagen. The Senior Class song, ‘Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)’’ by Gerry Goffin Mi- chael Masser, Copyright (c) 1973, 1975 by Screen Gems- EMI Music Inc. and Jobete Music Co., Inc., is used by permission. All administrative rights are controlled by Screen Gems-EMI Music Inc. All rights reserved. Our initial sales representative was Walt Davis who was replaced by Keith Mathews. Our plant representative is Roger Baugh. The MILESTONES staff would like to thank Kim Sisk for allowing the annual staff to take pictures of the Carrousel Court at her house, and we would like to thank Home Savings and Loan for allowing us to take pictures of the Homecoming Court at their new facility. We would like to thank Richard Hamrick and Kings Mountain Junior High for the loan of their enlarger. The yearbook staff is grateful fo Gary Stewart for the use of his many photographs. The 1979-80 MILESTONES greatly appreciates the unselfish and quality work of Mr. 1.G. Alexander who provided pictures, equipment, advice, and assistance whenever necessary. Our appreciation goes to those artists on page 182 and 183 who gave of their time and talent. The artists on page 182 are: Robert Ruff, Diane Harper, Tim McDaniel, Kristen Hagen, Donna Queen, and Randy Howell. Those who provided art for 183 are: Tim McDaniel, Diane Harp- er, Ronny Chapman, Kristen Hagen, Penny Blanton, and Billy Page. Finally, as adviser, | would like to thank Janet Childers, Leslie Hambright, and Joni Wright on behalf of the staff and student body. These three co-editors have been on the staff for three years and have helped make my job easier. Were it not for their efforts, decisions; disputes, and “agonizing’’, there would be no MILESTONES for 1980. HRiSTEW HAGEN ae 223
