Frank Small unlocking the doors on the first day of school. Juniors and seniors strolling casually to their first class, laughing at the sophomores who rush frantically up and down the halls, clutch- ing a schedule, and searching desperately for room G-8. Going into Contemporary USS. Studies with no books and coming out with two and a homework assignment. Thinking that it’s not fair that flushing sophomores isn’t allowed any more. Finding out that you have a library book overdue since last year. Learning that lunches cost a nickel more but still taste the same. Will I make it through another year of school? BEGINNINGS 4 ESTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMILESTONESTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLM , ESTONESTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMILESTONESTUVWXYZAB | friend ¢ ship (fren(d) ship) n. 1. feeling of com- panionship. 2. Reunion. Finding out that your best friend is in all of your classes. Finding out that the good-looking guy you’ve been in love with for three years is your Biology II partner. Missing all of your friends who graduated last year, but making lots of new friends in the sopho- more class. Young love as you discover that the sophomore who had a crush on you last year grew up over the summer. Finding out that the teacher you thought was such a pain last year is really a terrific person. And learning that your friends are the best thing going at KMSHS. FRIENDSHIP 6 IKLMILESTONESTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMILESTONESTUVWXYZVW. spir -it (spir it) n. 1. vigorous sense of member- ship in a group: school spirit. 2. Cheering at pep rallies until you’re hoarse. Coming to football games wearing shorts when everybody else is freezing. Screaming and jumping up and down when the team wins; letting the tears of disap- pointment flow freely when they lose. Trying to understand what’s going on at a wrestling match. Getting lost on the way to a basketball game at South Point and finally getting there just as the game is ending. Going to a baseball game and groaning as somebody hits into a double play. Watching the boys’ tennis team freeze during a February match. Being a Mountie! SPIRIT ' H) 7 1 Y ZABCDEFGHIJKLMILESTONESTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMILESTONE Classes Seniors Juniors Sophomores Activities Clubs Sports Festivities Steve Baker — B.A. in Social Studies from Pfeiffer College. Junior High School teacher. Senior High School teacher, football, cross country, track and girls basketball coach. Learning Disabilities teacher since 1976. Married to Joan King Baker. Member and Sun- day School teacher at First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. If you’ve ever asked anyone about Steve Baker, you probably received an answer similar to this: “He will go any length to help his students, not for self gratifi- cation but because he cares deeply for each and every human he encounters.” The students at KMSHS have known that for a long time. Kings Mountain set a state record in 1978 with a Muscular Dyp- strophy Dance-a-thon that raised over $6,600. Mr. Baker conceived, organized, and was the driving force behind this suc- cess. At school each day, you can find him running around the halls making sure KMSHS is set for smooth sailing. How can you thank a man who has done so much for a community that it’s impossi- ble to write down all his contributions? The Senior Class you would like to try by dedicating the 1979 MILESTONES to . Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me ... would we, could we? Hugh O’ Brian Nominee Chip McGill, 1978 MOREHEAD SCHOLARSHIP NOMINEES A Morehead Award is an honorary award accompanied by a grant of money to finance the recipient’s undergraduate study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The grant for each year of college is $3,000 which covers the year’s tuition, room, board, laundry, books, all student fees and incidentals expenses. In making awards, the John Motley Morehead Foundation regards the qualities of (1) the evidence of moral force of character and of capabilities to lead and to take an interest in schoolmates, (2) scholastic ability and extra-curricular attainments, and (3) physical rigor, as shown by participation in competetive sports or in other ways. Students are nominated by a Nominating committee in their school. Nominees then proceed to the County Selection Committee in October. Three students are selected from Cleveland County to be interviewed by the District Selection Committee in January. Students selected by the District Committee will go before the Central Selection Committee at Chapel Hill in March. Until four years ago, only boys were eligible for the Morehead Scholarship. This year, for the first time, all of the County nominees and the alternate were girls. KMSHS’s Morehead Nominees were Todd Gatts, Lindsay Holmes, Cindy Wells, and Kenny Vance. Lindsay was one of those chosen by the County Selection Committee to proceed to district competition. Incidentally, two years ago, Kings Mountain’s Morehead Nominee who went on to be a Morehead recipient was Lindsay’s brother, Chris. Maybe it runs in the family. 100 | Marching B ——y a. = WT || Stan Alexander, Joe Ayers, Eric Bernette, David Barrett, Charlie Baumgardner, Tracy Baumgardner, Herbie Beam, Beverly Bell, Gina Bell, Reta Bennett, Penny Biddix, Karen Blackwell, Reggie Blalock, Penny Blanton, Liz Bradley, Jeff Campbell, Jennifer Campbell, Dennis Caveny, Janet Childers, Valerie Curry, David DeVane, Kim Dixon, Mark Dixon, Rex Dye, Rhonda Echols, Sandy Ford, Kim Gladden, Robin Green, Lanny Guyton, Eric Hagen, Henry Hager, Marcus Hager, Eddie Hamrick, Jamie Hamrick, Laurence Hamrick, Lindsay Holmes, Keith Holt, Janet Homesly, Anne Hord, Susan Howze, Kristal Huffstetler, Mark Hullender, Ruth Hullender, Sharon Huskey, Cynthia Jefferies, Kevin Jenkins, Darlene Jones, Nancy Lee, Stephen Lee, Robert Lutz, Jayne Lybrand, Carla Mauney, Sarah Mauney, Leigh Mauney, Billy McCarter, Quint McCoy, Cathy McDaniel, Elizabeth McGill, Chip McGill, Greg McGinnis, Mark McSwain, Barry Morrow, Jeff Moss, Jeff Moss, Kim Moss, Donna Myers, Eric Myers, Loretta Oates, Julie Owens, Julie Phifer, Janice Plonk, Mary Plyler, Jennifer Pruette, Sharon Putnam, Stacie Rhea, Rhonda Ross, Toni Ross, Jeff Rowell, Leanne Sanders, Edie Schronce, Sherry Short, Kathy Sincox, Mark Smith, Brad Tate, Roxanne Tate, Ann Thomasson, Kenny Vance, Chuck Walker, Susan Ware, Cindy Wells, Donna Whetstine, Kim Whisnant, Bridgette White, Kelli Wilson, Joni Wright, Phillip Wright, Lynn White, Lisa Yarboro Drum Majors Lindsay Holmes and Kelli Wilson 101 Majorettes |Viajo @ Kim Gladden Leanne Sanders Penny Biddix Karen Blackwell Roxanne Tate, Janet Childers, Carla Mauney, Jayne Lybrand, Kevin Jenkins, Kristal Huffstetler, Janet Homesly, Sarah Mauney, Susan Howze, Edie Schronce, Ann Tho- masson, Donna Myers Jeff Moss Kim Whisnant Rusty Baumgardner, Kim Whisnant, Julie Phifer, Sherry Short, Kenny Vance, Cindy Wells, Janice Plonk, David Barrett, Robin Green, Stacie Rhea, Cathy McDaniel, Rita Bennett, Joni Wright, Tracy Baumgardner, Jeff Moss, Nancy Lee, Laurence Hamrick, Eric Hagen, Reggie Blalock, Rhonda Echols, Sharon Putnam, Chuck Walker, David DeVane, Rex Dye, Eric Barnett, Keith Holt, Quint McCoy, Jeff Campbell, Beverly Bell, Chip McGill, Jeff Moss. Golf is a game played with a driver, brassie, spoon, baffy, cleek, midiron, midmashie, mashie iron, mashie, spade mashie, mashie niblick, pitching niblick, niblick, wedge, and putter. The golfer takes his driver (the club not the operator of his cart) and tees up the ball (better to be teed up than teed off) and addresses the ball (I don’t know where you address the ball or what the zip code is). The ball has dimples for more stability in flight; it is not necessary for the golfer to have dimples or to be stable. The golfer then hits the ball as hard as he can in order to lose the ball. Then he gets in his cart (remember that golf is a sport for exercise) and tries to find the ball he just lost. When he finds the ball he hits it and loses it again. He gets back in his cart (exercise remember) and starts looking for the ball again. He does this two or three times until he approaches the green. Surrounding the green are several sand piles for the golfer to play in if he gets tired of losing the ball. He then tries to get the little white ball into a grassy area. After much-squinting, looking, and figuring he hits the ball toward the cup. Then, for some unknown reason, the golfer jumps up and down, swears, and throws his club (I guess this is where the exercise comes in). He does this two or three times until the ball goes into the cup, which should be the end of the game, but no, he takes the ball out of the cup and starts all over again. I think the end of the game occurs at something called the nineteenth hole where all the golfers practice getting stable. 136 Spirit Week This year our varsity cheerleaders sold home- coming ribbons to promote spirit and raise money. The ribbons went quickly as both stu- dents and teachers alike bought them. Of all our Spirit Day, Fleuf Day was the most fun and creative. She is co-captain of the cheerleading squad and is involved in several school organizations, including SAE, The Beta Club, and the Pep Club. Her future plans in- clude attending the University of North Caroli- na at Chapel Hill. The ballots are counted and the name of the Homecoming Queen is announced. But there’s a lot of work that goes into selection of the Homecoming Queen. First, any school organization that pays the $10.00 registra- tion fee and enters a float in the Homecom- ing Parade may select a Homecoming nomi- nee. The student body then votes on the nominees and the top five are designated as the Homecoming Court. The students select the one lucky girl from the court to be the Homecoming Queen. b ve AN pitti dee UY a HHH Ny ls 144 Homecoming And Dances are becoming increasingly popular at our school. It’s hard to believe that just a few hours earlier the cafete- ria still looked like the cafete- ria. It took hours and hours of hard work to transform a plain dull cafeteria into the mystical fantasyland you’re standing in now. A wall mural of the Pavilion at Myrtle Beach as well as table decorations like sea shells, fish nets and sand buckets carried out the prom’s theme. Chase lights around the doorway and a mir- ror ball on the ceiling gave the impression of being on the Grand Strand at Myrtle Beach. The Junior-Senior was attended by many. The 1978 Senior Class presentation was The Perfect Idiot, a three act comedy by Eunice and Grant At - kinson. The story cen- ters around a teenage genius whose _intelli- gence, as well as his in- vention that hypnotizes people, gets him in plenty of trouble with his friends, his girl- friend, the school ad- ministrators, and _ his parents. His efforts to get out of trouble (in- cluding a faked nervous breakdown) only suc- ceed in getting him into more trouble. All in all, The Perfect Idiot was a truly delightful com- edy. The, £979 Senior Class play was The Re- markable Incident at Carson Corners, a play in three acts by Kristin Sergel adapted from the television show by Reginald Rose. Intially presented on Studio One, CBS-TV, the dra- ma revolves around the death of a young boy. The death was called accidental, at first, but months later evidence appears which leads the students to believe that the boy was murdered. The resulting “trial” shows that several peo- ple were indirectly re- sponsible for the death. One process is the use of American’s em- bossed die program, dies A-1 and A- 7. The second process is the use of artwork converted to silkscreen appli- cation. The application is white 325 with silver foil on the embossed date. The title, date and volume number also appear on the spine or backbone. The cover material is colored Basin 517 and the grain is typesetter. Our original yearbook salesman was Joe DeMaio who was replaced by Walt Davis. The plant consultant was Rog- er Baugh. We hope you enjoy the 1979 edition of the Milestones. It cannot be proved by the Bible that Jesus Christ ever smiled The average number of peanuts per shell is 2.35 . Sophomores soon to be juniors, juniors soon to be sen- iors, and seniors soon to be on their own. Signing annuals and trying to keep back the tears as you realize you may never see some of your class- mates again. Cleaning out your lock- er, throwing away old tests, history notes, and a sandwich you brought for lunch last December but never got around to eating. Is it just junk you’re tossing into the trash? Or is it a part of your life? Crying your eyes out as you play in your last band concert or sing in the final choral recital. Gradu- ating. Realizing that you’re not as glad to get out of KMSHS as you thought you would be. Getting your diploma, shaking Mr. Wheeler’s hand, saying you’re glad it’s over as tears stream down your cheeks. Each day my life is changed through the people and exper- iences I encounter; each day I’m taught to be the person I am. In this book we have frozen pieces of the past for you to gaze at ten years from now and remember the way we were, but when you look at this book the second or third time, look at yourselves the way others see you. See yourself screaming your fool head off at the football games. See yourself laughing at the stupid joke the kid behind you just told. See yourself crying at the last assembly. See your- self in style at your first Junior-Senior. See yourself as an integral part of Kings Mountain Senior High School. Each of the people in KMSHS has shaped my life as they have shaped others. I would like to thank a few by name. Mr. Rountree; thanks for your guidance and wisdom. I’ll probably never know how much you’ve shaped my life. Mrs. Bridges and Mrs. Lavender; your teachings (in and out of Class) have and will prove invaluable to me. To all'the people at Kings Mountain Senior High School; thanks for me. Todd After the last deadline has passed and all the Rule-A-Heads are packed away, the Miles- tones Staff has a chance to look back on their accomplishment. Now the deadlines don’t seem as frantic, crop wheels are simple and grease pencils can be found in abundance. I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this book a collection of memories we will all cherish. It seems hard to believe another year has come and gone. To graduate seems ever more surprising. How did twelve years go by so fast. If there was just some way to stop time so we could see everything going on around us. That’s whai this annual is for. Perhaps some of the moments we’ve stopped and put on paper will help you remember a special person, an exciting game or a class you made a “B” in that you never thought you’d pass. I would like to thank Joni, Janet and Leslie for the “Figets” and, wish them the best of luck with next years book. I hope you have as much fun as Todd and I had with this one. Most of all I would like to thank Joe Round- tree, oh excuse me Rountree. Without his guid- ance, support, and stories od Davidson we would have never been able to see our dream come true. If you can look through this book and remember all the good times you’ve had at KMSHS, our dream has been fulfilled. National Cartoon’s Annual House is now closed for the summer.
