Like the moth, we are weaving a “cocoon” that envelopes and identifies us. We scorn, however, the single thread of the moth. Our threads are variegated and colorful — rough and silky. We combine the hard denim of work, the shiny satin and frothy lace of social events, the strong burlap of sports, and the bold patterns of knitted yarns to make our “coat of many colors” truly reflect our own personalities. There is smoothness like a ribbon of laughter woven among the coarseness of disappointments and failures. No two garments are the same — our interests, skills, and abilities form different designs. What we do, what we think, and what we feel are reflected in the material which we produce. It is our fervent hope that each added pattern be complete and interest- ing ; that our fibers be strong and true ; and that our colors be pure and rich. This coat becomes our magic carpet which transports us from the realm of learning into the active world of achievement. The fabric and we are the same — you see . . . . THIS IS THE FAB RIC OF OUR LIVES A HEARTFELT DEDICATION Your keen interest in our high school and your understanding of her students has envoked in us a de- sire for knowledge, an assurance of ourselves, and an awareness of our personal responsibilities. We shall always be inspired by your spicy wit and ever-present sense of hum- or. These are but a few of the fine characteristics that make you out- standing. Mrs. Withers at home with Mark and Grafton. To you, Mr. Withers, we sincerely offer a place in our personal Hall of Fame as . . . “The greatest.” Mr. Withers concentrates on pressing problems. ACADEMIC We are the looms through which each thread must pass. The weav- ing is continuous and the threads must not be broken in order to achieve the desired finished product. Each strand of learning makes our cloth stronger, more durable, and more beautiful. Our teachers have fashioned patterns of time and space which blend secrets of mystic knowledge with the reality of clearest vision. Our enrichment of the fabric is only accomplished through labor, which we often resist, but which is essential in the shaping and molding process by which we become truly educated. In our class rooms we have daily oppor- tunities to widen our horizons, strengthen our moral fibers, and enhance our total personalities. As we slowly and painstakingly acquire knowledge and skills, we are aware of a change in our concept of ideals and standards. The superficial is discarded, and we yearn for increased wisdom for its own sake as well as for achievement of personal goals. We find our “place in the sun” only after a firm foundation is laid. 8 Administration Chairman F. Plonk, Mr. 0. Williams, Dr. P. Padgett, Mr. H. Harry, Mrs. J. McGill KINGS MOUNTAIN BOARD OF EDUCATION School business in Kings Mountain has be- come “big business”, and the men and wom- en comprising our school board have given unstintingly of both time and effort in plan- ning, executing, and formulating school policy for the entire system. The tremendous job with its heavy burden of responsibility would stagger men of less vision and courage than our board possesses. Moving forward steadily toward the realiza- tion of a community dream — a new high school plant, we can anticipate a time in the future when our students will occupy a mod- ern structure with a broadened curriculum and wider range of study. Too often we forget to say thank you for past performance and future achievements, but niay the MILESTONES staff do so now with sincerity and gratitude. 10 Miss Alice Averitt, A.B., Atlantic Christian; M.A., George Peabody SUPERVISOR COORDINATES TEACHING AND TESTING PROGRAM In a position of vast responsibility Miss Averitt serves with warmth, understanding, and deep perception of the problems of stu- dents and teachers alike. The elementary and high school programs are enriched through the circulation of current teaching materials and audio-visual aids from her of- fice. Her belief in sound education for all children is demonstrated each day through her work and accomplishments. Miss Averitt and Mr. Kay of the Guidance Department discuss testing. In this second year of consolidation, we are well on the way to achieving the results predicted. It was generally felt that through consolidation we could have a high school of sufficient size to offer an excellent educa- tional program. Through the cooperation given by patrons and students, our school is making splendid progress. A bond issue has provided funds for a new high school. A large site has been purchased, and we expect in the near future to have the building and facilities necessary for our school’s progress. It has been a source of satisfaction to us to see how the student body has made use of the present facilities and how well the students have worked together forming a strong unit with an excellent sehool snirit. Our people have cooperated and have shown tney want a good school and are willing to do whatever is necessary to support one. There have been inconveniences, as were expected, due to crowded conditions ; but these have been ac- cepted during this period of transition from three high schools to one. We realize that a good school does not come by chance. It has to come through de- sign, careful planning, and cooperation. With the spirit that we see existing in our school unit, especially among the pupils in the high school, we have no fear for the future. Mr. B. N. Barnes, Superintendent Mrs. Wanza Davis, secretary to the Superintendent, demonstrates her ability in the office; she retains an abiding interest in all the students. Past president of the Kiwanis Club, Mr. Barnes is active in civic organizations. SOUND ADMINISTRATION EFFECTED THROUGH HARD WORK OF COMPETENT SUPERINTENDENT Cheryel McAbee, Mary Evans, Brenda Lovelace, and Marilyn Dixon help with work in Mr. Barnes’ office. It takes a Superintendent “on the move” to cover entire district. Mr. Harry E. Jaynes, Principal The school year 1962-63 at Kings Moun- tain High School will not reach its inevitable sunset without leaving numerous marks of distinction. Our entire student body was gravely affected by the Cuban Crisis. This nuclear war threat and the thorough pre- paration you made will long remain a dis- tinction. The additions of a complete Guid- ance Department and elementary special education classes have given you a new out- look on yourself and others. The use of the entire building for high school work has en- abled us to officially omit the name Central from our high school. The senior class holds the distinction of being the largest in the history of this school. It also ranks above most senior classes in leading the student body in its quest for excellence in education. The senior class holds still another distinction. This distinction is their leadership in one of our finest activities programs. We have excelled and expanded in many activities which will help us to keep the fine reputation presently enjoyed by all of us. As the year ends, everyone is faced with a vital school challenge. This challenge is the preparation and planning for our new high school. You, the faculty and student body, will have many opportunities to help estab- lish routines and to set standards for the new school. Let us all join together in this task, complete this planning and assure our community that the new high school will in- herit the rich educational traditions you have had a part in establishing. Its versatility makes it a perfect companion for our moods, and it satisfies our need for expression in a form other than through books in classrooms. Just as an afghan is knitted of the yarns of many colors form- ing numerous designs, so must our lives be enlarged with many activities to avoid monotony, to encourage growth, and to promote understanding. When we look at the afghan, we think of warmth, which represents the close club friendships with classmates and faculty; the defi- nite patterns, which we realize we must also follow so that we may be of service; and lastly, the glorious colors, which surely make us think of happiness, gaiety, and youth. Patterns ,colors, and textures provide the interest and excitement in our perfect fabric. We experience a feeling of pride as the sound of the gavel echoes still in our hearts. 86 Clubs DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES DEMONSTRATED THROUGH STUDENT PARTICIPATION ORGANIZATION First row: Mary Wright, Joan Howard, Jewel Robbs, Dora Kircus, Linda Brown, Sandra Spangler. TIME, TALENT, AND TOIL EXPENDED IN EDITING OF MILESTONES Only those people on the editorial staff can describe the endless hours spent be- hind mountains of paper, trying to meet deadlines. Writing copy and captions, drawing up layout pages, arranging for pictures, proofreading — this work demands an imaginative, creative mind, not to men- tion time and that “never give-up” at- titude. The spirit of KMHS is reflected in the pages of this yearbook. It is a record of all the memories of our high school years, which otherwise might soon fade away. 90 Jewel Robbs Editor Truett Moore Photographer Gail Huffstetler and Petie Lynn discuss Features section with Mrs. Finger. Each j person ' s service is gratefully acknowledged and deeply appreciated. ] 1 s I Eugene Williams, Jimmy Davis, Robert Lee Smith, Odessa Lindsay ATHLETICS On the playing fields and in the gymnasium of KMHS we send forth our representatives — the “cream of the crop”. The core of our athletic program centers around the major sports, football and basketball, and the entire student body is caught up in the excitement of the seasons. Our moments of triumph add zest to our lives and to the spirit of our school. As burlap symbolizes toughness, strength, and durability in our cloth, so does athletics add these dimensions to our lives. Through gruelling hours of practice, our athletes acquire skills, strength, patience, and determination. Win or lose, an important lesson is imparted through competition — to do our best for the team, take “bad breaks” without bitterness, and rejoice in the warm glow of earned victories. The increased resolve within us to be good sports wherever we go adds a desirable pattern. 130 Football First row: Ronnie Rhea, Mike Butler, Mickey Bell, Tommy Black, Tonnie Ware, Mike Tignor, Dennis Floyd, Ronnie Dover, Charles Ruff, L. MOMENTS OF TRIUMPH AND The 1962 football season was the year of the inexperienced for the Kings Mountain Mountaineers. It was to be the rebuilding year — a year which the “freshman” head coach would use to teach his squad of inex- perienced and uninitiated gridders the basic rudiments of the gridiron sport. After a slow start, the relatively inexper- ienced aggregation came to life with the fourth game of the season and rolled to the season’s end as the most improved team in the conference. The first game for the new squad was a split affair in which both the Mountaineers and East Rutherford dominated play for one half. At the game’s conclusion each team breathed a sigh of relief at the 0-0 final score. Next came the venture into Palmetto land to test one of South Carolina’s best teams, York. The Mountaineers never got a chance to get rolling in this one, but they made the Green Dragons battle for every inch of turf before falling 20-6. They were less impressive in the next week as they downed Chase 18-0 in the first home game of the season. They could not take ad- vantage of the breaks in this encounter which should have been more of a run-away. It was an altogether different story in the county seat the following Friday. Kings Mountain suffered an opening lapse and fell to the Golden Lions of Shelby by the margin of a “foot”, 7-6. Following the opening score by the Lions, it was “all Mountaineer” as they pushed Shelby from one end of the field to the other. This was the game that made Von Holcomb, Richard White, Butch Riley, Steve Carpenter, Dale Putnam, Jimmy Owens, Tommy Plonk. DEJECTION MARK MOUNTAINEER SEASON Kings Mountain the team to beat throughout the remainder of the season. They did it the next week against the Little Six Conference champions, Bessemer City. Only a preponderance of penalties in the first half held the winning margin to 13-7 at the final gun. Against the defending WNCHSAA Champ- ions, Mooresville, in the sixth game, the Mountaineers were the victims of two “home- run” plays as they lost 20-13. October 19 saw the improving Kings Moun- tain eleven give a large Lincolnton Homecom- ing crowd the scare of its life before bowing in the final minutes 19-13. The Wolves trailed by a single point until the last minute TD pulled the game out of the fire. Rutherfordton-Spindale was the next to suffer at the hands of the Mountaineers. A pre-season dark-horse, the Hilltoppers fell to the Bates team. The score was only 7-0, but it didn’t tell the entire story. The team that was said to have nothing at the season’s beginning moved into third place in the conference in the ninth game. The 13-0 shut out left Belmont still looking for its first win over Kings Mountain. Cherryville came to town for the season’s finale. The Ironmen were battling for a winning season. Kings Mountain was holding precariously to the third rung on the con- ference ladder. Penalties against the Moun- taineers demolished this hope as the team was defeated 6-0. This was the year of reconstruction. Next year could be the year of attainment. I Tommy Hope on the loose in Chase game. Hubert’s in on another tackle. Such attributes as scholarship, school patriotism, character, and personal attrac- tiveness are qualities upon which selection is based. The winner is invited by the local chapter to a district meeting of all “Good Citizens” held at the Kings Mountain National Battle- ground. Belmont 230 IM Our own KMHS baseball team this year won the Southwestern Confer ence championship. Having an 11-3 record during the regular season, it met its defeat in a 3-0 game with Hickory. The boys on the team should be proud of their excellent showing. We offer them our heartiest congratulations for a job well done. Managers; Kenneth Parker, David Clippard, and Joe Payne. You’re out. 231 Batter-up! THEY’RE OFF! Unlike other high school sports, track participants compete as individuals. With the exception of the relay race, each boy on the team must prove his own worth. The track team attended three scheduled meets, and those outstanding boys who qualified competed in the bi-conference meet. Competition at these meets was keen, but our boys came through each time with a good ac- count of themselves. GOLF TEAM ESTABLISHES 7-2 RECORD Terry Leonard and George Plonk 234 I I SPRING ADDITIONS TO THE KMHS FACULTY Mr. Boyd We were proud to welcome to our school this semester two new teachers. Mr. Boyd, a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, taught math and civics. Mr. Bradley, our student teacher, was a pleasant addition to our busi- ness education department. Both men gave generously of their time and talents to improve further the quality of teaching in our high school. We shall miss Mr. Bradley, and we shall gladly welcome back Mr. Boyd next fall. 235 Mr. Bradley PAGEANT PORTRAYS MEANING OF EASTER Bible Club members during presentation of “The Unrecorded Miracle.” A most inspiring Easter play was given by the Bible Club this spring. The pageant, written by Quay Moss and Edward Love- lace, was the story of a Roman centurion who became a Christian. It was chosen from a number of plays written by Bible students. Appropriate to the Easter season, the pag- eant served as a fitting reminder of the true meaning of the Resurrection of Christ. Quay Moss and Edward Lovelace confer on production problems. First row: Ike Patterson, Judy Callahan, Jeff Pat- Barnes, Mickey Bell, Butch Vess. Third row: Wendell terson, Billy King. Second row: Quay Moss, Kenneth Phifer, Edward Lovelace, David Adams, Gary Wilson. i Once again, KMHS students had the opportunity to display their talents in the annual Ki- i wanis Talent Show. The win- ners of the high school preli- minary performed in the city- wide show, the proceeds of which will help finance a local i youth project. The show proved I to be an interesting program for the spectators, as well as a “proving ground” for aspiring entertainers. Winning “Weejins” display triumphant smiles. { EAGER CONTESTANTS DELIGHT AUDIENCE SENIORS HONORED AT LUAU An Hawaiian hut, a rolling surf, swaying palm trees, pretty girls in grass skirts — what bet- ter setting for an unforgettable Junior-Senior Prom. Guests were greeted at the door with “Aloha” and festive leis. After the pro- menade, the newly-crowned Queen of the Prom reigned over the dance. It will always be re- membered by the seniors as one of the highlights of their last year at KMHS. Eye-catching sign is “conversation piece.” 238 Waitresses welcome guests with leis. This is the day we have looked for- ward to for twelve years ; but now that it is here, we don’t know whether to laugh or cry. We want to laugh, because we know we have accomplished something and are ready to go out and meet the world. We want to cry because we know it is time to leave all our good times and all our won- derful memories behind. But this is the day that will forever have a special place in ou rhearts — Graduation Day. fsl w Silent preparations for “big moment.” 244 Graduation — a moment to remember 1 fT- t.
