We ha -e recorded the pictures of our beloved friends and the outstanding events of our school life. r CONTENTS: CLASSES • ACTIVITIES • ADS 1927-28-1933-34 llilli ij u a imii nun 11 I II IIIID Mr. Claud Grigg, Superintendent. Mr. B. N. Barnes, the first high school principal. High School library started with 8 maga- zines, Current Events, Charlotte Observer and $270.00 worth of books. Book cases and suitable books placed in grades 1-1 . Small library started at Davidson. The first home economics room equipped. Six weeks session of summer school instituted. Central playground enlarged. Front campus of Central beautified. East Kings Mountain School District consolidated with the Kings Mountain District. East School Building erected. Band instructor secured for 2 periods a week. Central School burned. Present Central School erected. 1934-35-1938-39 Mr. B. N. Barnes elected Superintendent. East Elementary, Central Elementary, and Davidson High School accredited. Central High School accepted by Southern Association of Secon- dary Schools and Colleges, and granted a charter for a chapter of the National Honor Society. Two rooms added to Davidson School. Home Economics Department wired for electric equip- ment. A George Reed Home Economics Department granted Kings Mountain High School. Class of 1937 donated proceeds from their class play to help defray expenses of the ninth month. Hullender property adjoining Central School purchased to en- large playground. Central School auditorium repaired after having been struck by lightning. Grounds of various schools improved under N. Y. A. Project. Policy of staggering terms of members of Kings Mountain Board of Education made law. Bible Depart- ment established. 1939-40-1943-44 Property purchased and developed into present athletic field. W. P. A. lunch rooms opened in all white schools. Corner lot adjoining Central School purchased for playground spac e. West School accredited. Music Department established at Davidson School. Twelve year program instituted. 1944-45-1948-49 Central School playground graded and beautified. County-wide bond election carried. Seats tjlaced in gymnasium, blood lights installed at athletic field by Kiwanis Club. Public address system placed in Central. School bus presented to high school by Neisler Mills. Teacbers’ home presented the City by the family of the late Jacob S. Mauney. Property adjoining West School pur- chased for playground. Educational projects in training veterans of World War II, white and colored, incorporated in Kings Moun- tain Schools. 1949-50-1951-52 Land adjoining West School purchased for playground. West School completely remodeled. Velma Craft Mill building rented for use of Veterans Cotton Manufacturing Program sponsored by Kings Mountain High School. Two instructors for the group un- secured. City schools celebrate silver anniversary of Superinten - dent B. N. Barnes as administrator of the system. Plans made for additional facilities at Davidson and for additional class rooms for the white schools. DEDICATION Mr. B. N. Barnes It is with deep respect and admiration that we dedi- cate this, the 1952 Milestones, to Superintendent B. N. Barnes— an administrator mild-mannered and kind, but staunch in the defense of his principles; hard- workina, but accessible in time of need.
