As guiding hands for this first year we chose Miss Houston and Mr. Coppa as our sponsors and elected K. McBrayer as our president. Then came the heartbreak of the year. Our initiation into high school. Everybody came out of it whole but some were sore for quite some time. After giving us such a rousing intiation into high school the Sophomores decided maybe we weren't so bad after all and they gave us a big party just to show that there weren't any hard feelings. As part of our Freshman year we were allowed to have a picnic and we did. What a picnic. An all-day trip to Lake Mead and Boulder dam. Everybody had a swell time in spite of the sunburns which had to be treated As our assembly program this year we presented a fashion show with the boys showing all of the latest models for 1941. Our Sophomore year started off with a bang. We chose Miss Whaley as our class sponsor and elected George Gallison as president. We all sincerely hoped that he would be able to lead us through a satisfactory ini- tiation of the dumb freshmen. He did. Everybody had a grand old time, lust to show the Freshmen that in spite of their illiteracy we still liked them we threw them a swell party. With school again convening in September of 1942 we found that we had stepped one notch higher in the ladder to success. Miss Whaley was again cursed with being our sponsor and Nick Kristich had the job of seeing that we had a satisfactory class. After election we began thinking immediately of our plans for a prom. Although our class had been touched severely by the call of our government for men we presented our Junior-Senior Prom on the theme of There Are Such Things . The tin woodman, the scarecrow and the yellow brick road were very familiar to all before the evening was over. It was decided to let Swede Osterman and Kenny May write our play for class assembly program. They did a bang-up job. We presented the super-duper, thriller-chiller of a mystery by the title of The Mystery of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or Two Jerks from Albuquerque . On our return to school this last autumn we found that our ranks had been thinned considerably by the armed forces. Among those missing from class were Eugene Coursey, Hubert Neal, Jay Putnam, Don Whaley, K. Mc- Brayer, Kenneth May, and Tom Mulhem. As president we elected Bob Orange. Of course, we couldn't have gotten along without Miss Whaley as our sponsor so she came along with the class. Because of the growing shortage of manpower, Miss Whaley thought it wisest if we presented our class play early in the year. On December 17, 1943, the Senior class of 1944 presented a three-act comedy by George Batson entitled Every Family Has One . The work and energy that was expended in this production can never again be acquired. The members of the Senior class shall forever be indebted to Miss Whaley for her part in directing us in this play. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. It seemed that the faculty of the High School thought that the Senior class should put on an assembly program. Having nothing better to do, we presented a comedy skit of what our faculty looks like. We are sure that it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Senior class of 1944 thanks the Junior class and their sponsors for the splendid prom given in our behalf. It was really swell. On April 13, 1944. we ditched school and went to the Hualapai moun- tains Although some people seemed to have made themselves scarce a grand time was had by all. Ice cream, cake, sandwiches, and soda pop furnished the nourishment we needed for this excursion. Eighteen JOSEPH A. COPPA EDNA WRIGHT SP°nsor President JUNIOR CLASS The Junior Class had a busy year, although their activities were rather limited by the shortages brought on by the war. Coke and candy sales at school were affected, and they sold soft drinks at football games when the weather permitted. The chief source of income was Junior dances. Especially successful was the Sadie Hawkins dance. Planning the Prom was fun, and they were pretty proud of the results of their hard work. The date of the Prom was March 17th, with St. Patricks Day as the theme, and When Irish Eyes Are Smiling as the theme song. The length and width of the gym was covered with 2-inch green and white crepe paper streamers, and the Irish motif was carried out in programs and table decorations. The Prom was an event that will long be remembered by all who attended. They enjoyed their Junior year, and regret to see it end—but they look forward to being Seniors! They were good sports and the day was enjoyed by all. Later, on November 5, a party was given in honor of them. At the end of the semester Carl Wright and Don Keller entered the service, and another election was held to elect officers to fill the vacancies left by them. The following students were elected: President...........................................Tommy Laitem Vice-President......................................Claudia Ricca Student Council Member..............................Cliff Waetje Twenty-four First row: Jean Ricca, Bob Waters, Grace Beaver, Jimmy Lennox, Peggy Leith, Bill Logsdon, Delma Schaeffer, Jane Owen. H. S. to live and learn. We had class election and elected Pauline Simmons class president, and Miss Leila Ricketts, class sponsor. The Sophomores initiated us in good style and then they repented and gave us a party. It fell to our lot to give the first assembly which, as we were inexper- ienced, was pretty corny. • In the spring the Juniors invited the Freshmen girls to serve at the Junior- Senior Prom. This was a triumph as Sophomore girls usually served at the Prom. We had a candy sale and it was another success. The candy sold, the Freshman treasury was full again, and the rest went home with a sweet taste in their mouth. Our second assembly came in March. It was better than the first but no prize winner. So ends the freshman year for us in M. C. U. H. S. Next year we'll be Sophomores and can initiate some poor freshmen.
