VARSITY BASKETBALL 1955 The 1955 Krng School Basketball Team clrmaxed a mednocre season by wrnnrng the Southern Connec trcut Prrvate School League Tournament held at St Marys School Durrng the regular campargn the qumtet won four and lost six Coach Evald Olsons charges drd not begm to set a wrnnmg pace untrl the final games of the serres whrch helped account for the tournament vrctory Thrs year s team consrstcd of five returnrng lettermen Captarn Pete Talbott Roger Bacon Fred Wrllrs ack Chesney and Brll Clrff Reynolds and Brll Sherrdan rounded out the squad The Kmgsmen opened the season rn the Stark School gym where all home games were played op posrng therr arch rrvals from New Canaan Lukes The Hrlltoppers had just a lrttle too much for the Colonral Roaders as they squeezed through wrth a 48 43 wxn The game was very close all the way St Luke s leading by fise pornts at the half 79 74 The Maroon and Whrte were just begrnnmg to move rn the thrrd quarter when Talbott Sebra and Chesney fouled out of the game Thrs was a tough break and the Knngsmens opponents stepped up the pace to the vrctory The second game of the campargn was played rn the Stamford Armory agarnst Daycroft and the charges of Coach Olson came through wrth a wrn 38 30 The Colonral Roaders trarled throughout the first half and Krngsmen took command and handrly outplayed therr opponents for the wxn Chesney was the hrgh scorer for Krng wrth fourteen pomts The Maroon and Whrte returned home for their next game and were defeated by Roosevelt 55 50 Roosevelt led by a small margm throughout the game untrl the thrrd quarter when the Kmgsmen tied the score at forty all Then the vlsrtors got four quick pornts and were never rn danger agam Chesney , ' I , .J , I X ' . . Yb- Talbott and Sebra tallied seventeen fourteen and thirteen points respectively for the losers The fourth game of the season was also played at home is the King quintet was edged by Cherry Lawn 49 48 Cherry lawn led throughout the game but the Krngsmen were nexer more than three points behind Willis had eighteen for the losers Coreh Olsons charges lost their fourth straight gime rn Greenwich against Brunswick 67 49 The game was tight up to the end of the first half as the Klngsmen trailed by only one point Then in the third period the Bruins fast breaks became too much for the King five and the Maroon and White were nexer in the game from then on Willis Tal bott and Chesney seored fifteen thirteen and thirteen points respectnely The Maroon and Wfhite got back to the winning side w ith a 54 59 win over Cherry Lawn at the Holmes School in Darien Coach Olsons team was never rn danger as it led by fifteen points throughout the game The rebounding of Talbott and Smith coupled with the fast breaks of Bacon Willis and Chesney gave the Krngsmen the upper hand Talbott was high scorer with fifteen while Smrth and Chesney tallied thirteen and twelve respectively The Colonial Roaders played their next game rn Wilton in a return match with St Luks and were defeated 51 44 Throughout the first half it looked like an upset might be rn the making as the King five led 24 20 at the half The game continued to be nip and tuck up to the fourth quarter Then the Hrlltoppers poured some quick points through the hoop and went on to win Chesney and Talbott were high seorers for King with fifteen and fourteen re spectrvely The Maroon and White returned to their home gym at Stark School and were handed their sixth and final defeat by Brunswick 50 35 A slow start plus the Bruins fast break1ng proved to be the downfall of the Krngsmen Being behind by eight points at the
