The Cowboy eleven witnessed a fairly successful season, end- ing third in the conference stand- ings . Faces were gloomy after the first game for due to inexperi- ence, Killdeer was defeated by Mott 21- 17 . The Cowboys proved that the first impression does not always hold true, for Abbey being the heavier team, was turned back by Killdeer by a margin of 18-13. Homecoming became joyous with a 33-0 victory over the Bel- field Bantams . The journey to Beach didn't hinder the Killdeer roster as they trampled the Buc's 28-0. After traveling to Hettinger and being defeated by a much favored team 21-13, the Cowboys won over an aggressive Bowman squad 26-6 in their last game of the season. Paced perfectly by Coach Fischer the Kill- deer Cowboys captured their first district championship in fifteen years and gained a position in the Region Eight tourney. The first great accomplishment for the Cowboys occurred during a Christmas tourney held at Arnegard . The quint downed a strong Mandaree five and came home with the first place trophy. In the Dunn County tournament, late in ' January, the Cowboys turned back a persistent Halliday team to capture championship honors of the tourney. Queen Attendants, Shirley Bice, Janet Mittelsteadt, Rosemary Cuskelly. A11 the hustle and bustle that you saw and heard in and near the halls of K.H.S. in September, was due largely to the preparation for Homecoming. The an- nual festival with its pep rallys, snake dance, cor- onation, dance, and the football game was a big event for students and teachers as well as outsiders. Action began Homecoming Eve, September 27, with a pep rally in the gymnasium. Cheerleaders directed the students in pepping yells to urge the cowboy attired football team to victory the following day. Rousing marches were executed by the band and slides shown renewed memories of the 1955 Homecoming. Royalty was bestowed upon Evelyn Fettig and Bar- nard Buresh by JoAnn Skachenko, the regal queen of 1955. The newly crowned king and queen preceded the spectators outdoors where King Bernard lit the bonfire. Cheerleaders then guided the students away from the blazing fire in a weaving snake like manner through main street to another rousing pep rally. Back to the gym the group brought the evening's ac- tivities to an end by dancing. Streamers, banners, and cowboy adorned students welcomed in the big day! Floats, the band, royalty, and riders and their horses composed the parade. Stimulating yells were given and the procession res turned to school where the Cowboys met their op- ponents, the Belfield Bantoms. The result -- the first Homecoming victory for the Cowboys in seven years. Athletes and their cheerers then met in the gym for a brief social. Bringing the gala day to an end was a dance in the gymnasium. Students and adults were seen happily dancing the evening away to the music of the Royal Melodies Orrhesrra- King and Queen view parade Royalty is crowned.
