It really is amazing, how the amount of statistics concerning teachers, builc Kilgore, and people in general that Mrs. Lowranct available at her fingertips. Administering to ne: job applicants and keeping things running srnc when Mr. Dodson is away on school business are a few of her duties. CNE of Kilgore s most outstanding citizens is a title that might easily be applied to W. L. Dodson, Superintendent of the Kilgore Independent School District. He was born in Kentucky but came to Texas while still a child. First college training was received at Sam Houston State Teachers College. He took undergraduate and grad- uate degrees at the University of Texas. Aspiring early to become a teacher, he real- ized his ambition, teaching first at Winona and later holding the position of superin- tendent at Gilmer and Brownsville. He came to Kilgore in 1932. During Mr. Dodson's administration, the public schools, like Kilgore, have had a mushroom growth, springing from a solitary red school building, housing several hundred children, to the present magnificent plant which is valued in excess of one million dollars. The faculty of eight in 1932 has grown to 160 teachers who daily administer to more than four thousand students. Always concerned with community welfare, Superintendent Dodson is active in Red Cross and Boy Scout work, is a member of the Lions Club and is a Mason. He is known in professional circles throughout the State for his work in setting up and directing visual education in the classroom. xecufive 'NING a combination general information booth td loafing room for off-duty teachers is enough to I most school secretaries into a frenzy, but Muriel tp, who presides in Mr. Newsome's office, seems to a on this diet. Chief dislikes are people who call Merle and her first name, Hattie. She holds a it grudge against the Dean of Boys who allegedly ed her shiny new desk, and against teachers who ot follow printed instructions, but it is all in fun. .y, she is a good sport and a nice person to know. X NEVER too busyuto listen to the other fellow's problems is Principal C. L. Newsome of Kilgore High School. Sincerity and understanding of human nature are two personal traits that impress all who know him. His first ambition in life was to become a school teacher and he attended Commerce State Teachers College with this in view. Changing his mind upon graduation, he treated himself to a business course and obtained a position as assistant bookkeeper in the Security National Bank of Dallas. Business life was not to his liking, however, and he turned to pedagogy, fill- ing positions in Lake Creek and Nelta before coming to Kilgore in 1929. Exterior calmness is not just skin deep with Mr. Newsome. lnwardly he receives great satisfaction from his hobby of collecting stamps and old clocks. When discov- ered in the act of appropriating cancelled postage from the wastebaskets, he often says, I take them home to the children. Although engrossed at present in a study of the public schools of Kilgore, Mr. New- some finds time to take part in civic affairs, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary International. The American Legion claims him as an ex-service man because of his two years of active duty with the United States Navy during the World War. Ranked as Yeoman, he was stationed at Newport, Rhode Island. inanciefz. MEMBERS of the school board are such a busy Q of men that getting them together for a picti almost an impossibility. Once mentioned by c gore newspaper columnist as one of the prettiest s taries in the city, Miss Wade Moore finds most enjoy her association with students and faculty mem She agrees with her boss as to pet peeves, hers k the job of checking reserved seats and season pass the college ball games. HIS early ambition to work in a bank seems to have had its effect on O. G. Chandler whose signature is a welcome sight to teachers Cespecially on contracts and pay checksl. As business manager of the Kilgore lndependent School District, he must oversee and protect the million dollar investment of Kilgore citizens. Perhaps he is not far from realizing his dreams as he draws financial s u p p o rt from one of the world's wealthiest school districts Chaving a tax evaluation of thirty-five million dollarsl. Mr. Chandler Cwhose first name is Orin and middle name just GJ is a life-long resident of Kilgore. He was educated at San Marcos State Teachers College and taught in Rusk County before coming to the local school in l932 to take the position which he now holds. He was a member of the school board for three years and now is secre- tary to that group. Hardest task, he says, is performing the tremendous amount of work required in keep- ing tab on college athletics.
