1635 1935 Qmeriods Qldest School To Celebrate Its Teroentenory 9 Interesting Highlights in the History of the Public Latin School of Boston, M assarhnsetis On the 13th of the second month, 1635 .... Att a Generall meeting upon publique notice .... it was .... generally agreed upon that our brother Philemon Pormort shall be intreated to become schoolmaster for the teaching and nourtering of children with us .... thus the Boston Town Records give notice of the beginning of the oldest educational institution, with con- tinuous existence, in the country-Boston's Public Latin School. The school, itself, was founded on April 23, 1635, more than a year before Harvard College was founded, and more than three years before that college opened. As an old history of the school says, Its first masters might have seen Shakespeare act in his own plays, its second master preceded John Milton and John Harvard at Cambridge by nearly a quarter of a century. And as most of you readers of the Pic probably know-Harvard holds the rank of oldest college in the countryf, lllany Distinguished Pupils As one would naturally conclude-a school whose traditions extend over the span of three centuries, and whose location is in the heart of New Eng- land-the practical birthplace of the nation-has been responsible for the early education of many famous men. Of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence, the following were students of Public Latin School: John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Ben- jamin Franklin, Robert Treat Paine, and William Hooper. One of the first pupils of the school was the well-known Cotton Mather. The tercentenary of this fine old school for boys is arousing the interest of high and preparatory school circles throughout the country. The Editor The Business Manager A. G.
