Att a Generall meeting upon publique notice .... it was .... generally agreed upon that our brother Philemon Pormort shall be intreated to become schoolmaster for the teaching and nourtering of children with us .... thus the Boston Town Records give notice of the beginning of the oldest educational institution, with con- tinuous existence, in the country-Boston's Public Latin School. The school, itself, was founded on April 23, 1635, more than a year before Harvard College was founded, and more than three years before that college opened. As an old history of the school says, Its first masters might have seen Shakespeare act in his own plays, its second master preceded John Milton and John Harvard at Cambridge by nearly a quarter of a century. And as most of you readers of the Pic probably know-Harvard holds the rank of oldest college in the countryf, lllany Distinguished Pupils As one would naturally conclude-a school whose traditions extend over the span of three centuries, and whose location is in the heart of New Eng- land-the practical birthplace of the nation-has been responsible for the early education of many famous men. Of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence, the following were students of Public Latin School: John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Ben- jamin Franklin, Robert Treat Paine, and William Hooper. One of the first pupils of the school was the well-known Cotton Mather. The tercentenary of this fine old school for boys is arousing the interest of high and preparatory school circles throughout the country. The Editor The Business Manager A. G. HLMA MATER 4 More than 60 years of educational progression have passed since the first institution was established that eventually became our High School. It was in 1874 that Dr. Alexander gave the funds to build the first edifice of learn- ing that was named in his honor. NVhen financial conditions made it impos- sible for the Alexander Institute to carry on, it was moved to jacksonville in 1894. Alexander Institute then became what is now known as Lon Morris College, financed and supported by the Methodist Church. The old college buildings remained in their previous locations and the pros- perous little town of Kilgore was without educational facilities but a short time. Kilgore Public Academy, a school of ten grades, continued until the present site was donated and a red brick building was constructed in 1912. It was in that year that Kilgore High School assumed its present name and received its first aid from the state. In the winter of 1933 we moved into our present S250,000 building where we have the choice of 30 credited units. In summarizing our progress, let us compare the faculty and senior class of '35 with that of the first in 1912. In 1912 Kilgore High School was taught by a faculty of four and the graduating class numbered three. In 1935 the faculty consists of twenty-five in the I-Iigh School alone, while the graduat- ing class numbers 125 from a student body of Soo. Board of Education JOHN T. CMM, President j. If ,N xx p 1 1 ' SHIRLEY JENKINS HILDRED JORDAN ROBERT REEvEs REVIEW of the SEASON With only forty boys reporting to the field to work for football coaches, Waters and Matthews are going to prove that a mere handful of willing boys can do more than a whole army without teamwork. After a month of training the Kilgore High School Bulldogs went to Tyler to play Henderson at the fair grounds. At the final whistle the score remained the same as at the first of the game, o-o. This did not leave any hard feelings for the Bulldogs for they won the game with jacksonville, October 6, 1934, to the tune of 13-12. October I2 came around and it was time to play the Stephen F. Austin Freshmen. This game resulted in favor of the visitors to the sum of 12-o. Several of the star play-ers received injuries. One of the season's biggest games took place at Tyler on October 19, when the fighting and raring-to-go Bulldogs downed the strong Tyler Lions in one of the greatest upsets of the year in District Io. The Bulldogs had the game going in their favor until the last minute of the play. At the end of the game the final score resulted 13-6. The next game of our schedule was played with Texarkana, October 26. A few bad breaks, a ragged brand of football and undecided officials caused the first conference loss of the Kilgore Bulldogs. The field was dusty and full of holes. The game was also played at night, and the first night game for some of the Bulldogs. The final score was: Kilgore, 18g Texarkana, 26. The team that had never scored a point in any game this season, Glade- water, took advantage of our Bulldogs and tied the score, 1 3-13. The Glade- water High School Bears were played at the Bear stadium in Gladewater, which they also dedicated that day. .gk swf ' Amos jixcxsox A steady performing guard was Amos, for the past two years. Quill and Scroll numbers over one thousand chapters. These are located in every state of the Union, in Hawaii, England, China, British Honduras and Alaska. Fifteen thousand young journalists from schools which are outstanding in the quality of their publication work, wear the badge of the society. The purpose of Quill and Scroll is to instill in students the ideal of scholarshipg to advance the standards of the profession of journalism by developing better journalists and by inculcating a higher code of ethicsg to promote exact and dispassionate thinking. clear and forceful writing. Second How: Betty lluekabee, Nelli- Arnold, Bryan A, Barton, Mrs. S. L. Russell, A, G, Morton, George Hayes, Ralph Wheeler, Mrs. Ruth Ross. Ruth Ross Clzafvfcr The first scholarship honor society tllhi Heta Sigmaj was founded in IQOO by Dr. XYn1. H. Owen 'hen he was principal of t' old South Side Academy of Chicago. After the worth of this socie' d been proved, many other non-secret societies were organized for the recognition of scholar- ship. ln many instances the schools of a certain type have united and agreed upon the same standard of scholarship and Slllllllll' methods of recog- nition for the entire group of schools. Thus the honor society had its birth. At a meeting of the National Association of Secondary-Sclumol Prin- cipals in 1919, G. Masters of Omaha, was appointed chairman of the com- mittee on a national honor society. The association favored the formation of a National honor society and authorized the president to appoint a com- mittee on constitution and organization, which drew up the constitution of the organization. Authority is vested in a national council of nine members. The four objectives, scholarship, leadership, character, and service, are not the only ones but they do include many of the things for which the secondary schools stand. W'l1ile scholarship is one requisite, it is not the only objective of the National Honor Society. Service is interpreted as: A willingness to render cheerfully and enthu- siastically any service to the school whenever called upo11. Leadership is interpreted to mean: lixerting a type of leadership which actively and wholesomely influences toward a fine leadership. A student may gain recognition in character hy: Constantly demon- strating such qualities of personality, honesty, reliability, promptncss, achievement, and morality as are indispensable to the finest young manhood and womanhood. A student must rank in the upper third of his class to be selected by the faculty as a member of the National Honor Society.
