Sectlon I THE KEWANITE Page 5 HISTORY OF THE CANE The hlgh school cane has a long hlstory havlng been mtroduced mto the hlgh school tradxtlons 1n the year 1902 In that year Mrs Kemp at that tlme a faculty mem ber decnded that there should be a symbol handed each year from the graduatlng class to the Jumors This carried the idea of a chal lenge to the Jumors to equal and excel the pre cedmg class ln school actxvl tles scholas txcally a n d otherwlse T h u s t h e class of 1902 put their col or o n his cane and wlth wlth much pomp and ceremony handed xt to the class of 1903 rep resented by Roy Hunt Thls cus tom has been contlnued each year Thls year when the class of 1936 handed the cane to the class of 1937 on class mght there were he colors of thxrty fxve classes on Orxgmally class mght the o caslon for the presentatlon of he cane was a solemn serlous affalr The slgnlflcance of the occasion gradually changed untll ln the late came more nearly a dare the serl ous atmosphere gave way to a scene of actxon To explam the snt uatlon at that tnme lt mlght be well to picture what happened on class mght m Mav 1929 the vear the mformalnty of the evenmg was at its helght On the west sxde of the studv hall are the semors on the east slde the Juniors also en masse The semor cane speaker Robert Tuck Hayward takes the floor The vnsxtors ID the rear of the room become qulet as he begms to speak but does he comphment the Jumors and offer the cane as a frxendly challenge? Instead he proceeds to lmmedxatelv slander the Juniors with a flery oratlon whlch IS soon drowned out bv the rustlmg of newspapers read by the Jumors apparently bored by the artlculatlons and gestlculatlons of Tuck Then comes the rejomder by Rlchard Horses Klnff rep resentmg the Jumors as the reclp lent of the cane Practlcally nobodv IS able to hear hls mighty words because the snores of the semors are so loud as to exclude all other sound Whereupon the mdlgnant gumors 1936 KEWANITE FEATURES JOURNALISTIC THEME D1v1s1on Pages Are Unusual The Kewamte staff declded on a newspaper theme but there lt stopped and left the ways and means of developlng lt to the two art editors Loxs Whltmore and Harry Prlnce Now how could they put the lded. of a newspaper across on the dxv1s1on pages Heres how It was done Flrst they made hne drawmgs of the prmcxpal flgures and then cut these shapes out of newspaper Did they ever have fun lookmfr through old flles of papers for school news' Halftone copper en gravmgs were made of the flff ures These were to be prmted on a maroon background and xt could be done IH two ways bv the use of a zmc engravmg for the back ffround or by uslng a lmoleum cut Money belng a grave consxdera txon the lmoleum cut was selected for use The blocks were secured and cut to the desxred slze Then usmg a large amount of mk these halftone engravmgs were prmted on sheets of paper Each one was placed upside down on the block and Dressed hard wlth a roller The prmt of the 1nk was left on the block and the editors proceed ed to cut out the shapes To make the page more decor atxve some suggestlve drawlngs IH whlte were added ln the upper corner of the page These were made by cuttmg out the hnes and spaces ln the hnoleum block be fore It was prmted The t1tle page cut which IS prmted ln maroon mk was made on a lmoleum block flrst and prmted ln the book IH the same manner as the large blocks for the d1v1s1on pages Now the Kewamte staff of 1926 presents for your approval the newspaper theme tear up thelr newspapers and throw great quantltles of paper at the semors The contamon spreads and soon the audxtorlum has the appearance of a shambles Fmallv the friendly get together breaks The next year class mffht took the form of a pageant followed bv a formal presentatlon of the cane to the Jumors and the cane had regained all of lts former tradltlon and dlgmty that lt had ln the year 1902 The flrst problem to confront a newly elected Kewamte staff IS the theme to be used ln the book The theme problem IS a dlffxcult one for thls must pertaln to the school and at the same t1me be mterestlng and colorful Durxnfr the past years practxcally every theme that has a bearlng upon Kewanee Hlgh School has been exhausted The 1936 staff wanted to flnd somethmg Oflglllal and somethlng dlfferent The newspaper theme IS qulte novel and has many possl blhtxes of development Then too what would Kewanee H1 h School be wlthout the newspapers to glve It publxclty To be sure we do owe '1 lot to these sources of publlc mformatlon and whv not recog mze them ln th1S issue of thc book The Journahstlc 16101 offers chance for some unusual but slm ple art work Then too the amount of composltlon that can be used IS about three tlmes that of former Kewanxtes The newspaper style for the numerous 'lrtlcles offers the wrlters a chance to pro duce somethmg newsy and peppy rather than the cut and drled composltlons used ln past Issues of the book In any news paper you wlll flnd thumb nall cartoons and plctures reproduced m varlous locatlons on the page Doesnt thls add to the effectlve ness of thls annual?
