'Lf' Wy? . n! q? fa ff . ,nj f - MV Olaf 0 fu W of HL lfw ll 0 ff, . 5 9 JI, BN.. 118 Dry 1060 summer, grape harvest, valley flatness, Levis, driving on the right side of the road, gum chewing, 210 mil- lion people in one country . . . this was the United States Allison Hodder found when she arrived in Fresno July 19. What she had left ten hours earlier in New Zealand . . . an island, winter weather, sheep, 50 of rain, mountainous terrain, boarding school, rugby, fish and chips, a country of 3 million people . . . A contrast--but what was similar for Allison and the people she met were the high hopes for the forthcoming year, the enthusiasm to encounter ideas and people the American Field Service experience would offer. A sheep ranch, 30 miles from Masterton, was Al1ison's home in New Zealand. Across the ocean in Kerman she lived in her new home with the Gordon Cowan family. She had attended a coed public school, Wairarapa College in Masterton for four years and boarded at Purnell, a mile from the school. Allison exchanged ideas on education and commented that her New Zealand school was more academic than Kerman. Girls participated on an almost equal basis as the boys in a variety of sports. Allison liked the casual rapport between students and teachers in our school and tried her best to learn Spanish, understand football, and attend classes new to her. Those who were able to meet Allison will remember her interest in people, warm personality and very, very small handwrit- ing. I wouldn't have a clue what this is.
