For this period in our lives we, as students, have given ourselves to the standards which have been set as guides for us to be able to become successful members of a college society. As we learn to study, to work, and to live, Wesleyan becomes a part of our being; and together with our classmates, alumni, faculty, and administration, WE BECOME WESLEYAN. As students we have high academic goals to meet, but not all of education comes from lectures, textbooks, and classroom recitations. The 1958 Porphyrian staff presents this book as an example of life at Wesleyan. It shall become: a fulfillment of your dreams; an object of your pride; a representation of your campus life; a photograph album of your old gang; a memoir of all the fun you had; a reminder of all the work you did. Dedication To one who . understands our silence, . considers our needs before our de- servings, . 1s true to himself and therefore true to us, . . . 1s the same today as he was yesterday and will be tomorrow, . guards our interests as his own, neither flatters nor deceives, gives just praise to our good deeds and equally condemns our bad acts, . has a firm, unwavering belief in God and in prayer and a life consistent with that belief .. . We the annual staff dedicate this 1958-59 Porphyrian to Dr. Harold P. Hamil- ton. DR. HAROLD P. HAMILTON The President OSCAR W. LEVER A.B., Wofford College; M.A., University of South Caro- lina; PhD., Duke University; Graduate Work, Boston University. “November 11, 1958 Dear Studen to: The Porphyrian staif has gathered together the story oi the year 1958-1959 and presented it to us chapter by chapter, ‘Je are grateful for this serv- ice. As we read these pages we live again the events ‘of the year and in memory find ourselves joined in the comradeshin which we hold so dear, Kentucky Vesleyan has now completed her first century of service, The second century speaks across the threshhold to challenge us, All of us have an opportunity to share in making Yesleyan the college of our dreams, These days, from the vantage point of 2059, will appear as a momentous prelude to a second century filled with fantastic developments in ideas, technology, and human relations, I enjoin you, dear students, to let not change, nor care, nor time, spoil our friendships and our dreams so closely entwined now with love and zeal for Alma Mater, Sincerely yours Oscar ¥,. This year the group consists of approximately forty members; Miss Billie George, accompanist; Mr. Jay Robinson, director. Under Mr. Robinson’s able direction the Singers made a tour of eastern Kentucky in the early part of April, singing in churches and high schools. This year’s program was one of the largest ever presented and it included the traditional “Dry Bones” as well as other spirituals, religious and secular numbers. The spring tour is something each choir member eagerly awaits. This, however, is not the only public performance of the choir during the year. The year’s program includes also an anthem each Wednesday for chapel and an annual spring concert. It is a pleasure to be a part of a group that works hard, has fun, and after performance can be proud of a job well done.
