The ' Wil- sonmen' won their fourth straight Kentucky Inter- PANTHERS HAVE GOOD SEASON The Panthers had a very successful season in 1952-53. The Wesleyanites had a season record of 9 wins against 10 losses in playing some of the better teams in the country. This was achieved by First row, left to right: Johnson, Pardue, Hood, Roop, Snowden, Shearer, Abernathy, Witherspoon. Second row: Coach Wilson, P. Johnson, Karr, Curtis, Moore, Burke, Glover, Third row: Withrow, Williams, Wood, Kellis, Ward, Masterson, Hackworth, Phelps, Manager, Dewey Parsons, collegiate Athletic Conference tournament cham- pionship. They defeated Centre College 70-51 in the 1953 finals at the Sportscenter. The Panthers won their initial game of the tour- nament by defeating Bellarmine of Louisville 81- 75. In the semifinals, where records fell like leaves in the fall, Wesleyan was victorious to the tune of 118-78. 58 a young team composed of only one senior, Cap- tain Clarence ‘'Rusty'’ Shearer; a freshman and three sophomores as regulars. The majority of the reserves were of the younger caliber. The Panthers of Coach Robert ''Bullet'’ Wilson also notched their fourth straight K.ILA.C. tourna- ment crown by downing a determined Centre Col- lege 71-50 in the finals. ROBERT BULLET WILSON Coach CAGE SEASON IN REVIEW The Panthers opened the season at the Sports- center with a 92-64 triumph over Bethel College. The game was never in doubt for the locals as they led all the way and showed the fans that they were in for a good season. The starters in the initial game ot the season found sophomores Tommy Witherspoon and Harvey Hackworth at guards, freshman Lewis Snowden in the pivot; and seniors were Allie Curtis and Captain Clarence ''Rusty'’ Shearer. Witherspoon was high with |? points. WESLEYAN VS. WESTERN The young Panthers of Coach Wilson held the nationally regarded Western Hilltoppers to a standstill for three quarters before bowing 86-72. They made a great showing against superior height and experience of the visiting Western team. Snowden and Witherspoon were tops for Wesleyan. LOUISVILLE DEFEATS WESLEYAN The Cardinals gave the Panthers their second loss of the season by defeating the Panthers on the Armory floor. It was height and experience that spelled the downfall of the Panthers, although they worked well as a team. K.W.C.-BETHEL Bethel became the victims of the now victory- hungry Panthers for their second loss to the Pan- thers this season. This was the first game for the Wilsonmen to hit the century mark. The score was 100-71 with ''Rusty'’ Shearer the spark plug of the night. Harvey, Guard Tommy, Guard WESLEYAN VS. CENTRE The third victory of the season was over the Centre College Colonels of Danville 81-77. It was a hard fought game for both K.I.A.C. quintets. Shearer again led the scoring. EVANSVILLE DEFEATS K.W.C. The Aces of Evansville won 90-79 in a foul-in- fested and very hard fought game. The deter- mined Panthers held on most of the way but just couldn't make the grade. Snowden was the lead- ing point producer. WESLEYAN 92-BEREA 79 With Harvey Hackworth and Tommy Wither- spoon at the wheel for more than 50 points, the Panthers sent their opponents to defeat 92-79. . alee . ao ] E2RRRR Ae oe 1 “y | ee AS 5 _— lS Rusty, Forward The Panthers grabbed an early lead, and the out- come was never in doubt. MURRAY-WESLEYAN Wesleyan went down in defeat to the ''Thor- oughbreds'' of Murray, 89-83, in a game in which Wesleyan had the lead several times. It was a great team that lost and one of their best per- formances of the season. GEORGETOWN DEFEATS WESLEYAN Nothing worse could have happened than what did the next night when the ''Tigers'' of George- town downed the defending K.I.A.C. champs 74- 73 for their first loss after 27 wins in the Confer- ence. Rusty and Snowden were outstanding for the Panthers, Dewey, Manager [es K.W.C. 102—BELLARMINE 81 For the second time of the season, the Panthers went over the century mark to defeat Bellarmine 102-81 at the Sportscenter. The superior height of the Wilsonmen was the difference as both teams played great ball. It was a team victory for the Panthers. WESLEY AN-EVANSVILLE The Aces of Evansville won their second game of the year from the Panthers 81-80 at Evansville. It was a hard fought game with the Aces winning on a field goal in the last 15 seconds. BEREA DEFEATS WESLEYAN The Panthers just couldn't get up enough steam and find their range as they trailed throughout the game to go down in defeat 97-88 for one of the highest scores compiled against a Wilson coached team. Rusty Shearer was the big gun for the losers. K.W.C.-CENTRE The Panthers defeated Centre 87-68 at Dan- ville. They played without the services of Tommy Witherspoon, who was home with the flu. Ernie Abernathy was high with 20 points, Snowden cap- tured 19, WESLEYAN DEFEATS OAKLAND CITY The Wesleyanites won their game with Oakland City 94-68. The team played a magnificent game with Snowden, Hackworth, Witherspoon each get- ting 16 points, and Shearer 14. Ernie, Forward Bobby, Guard WESLEYAN BOWS TO LOUISVILLE The Cards of ''Peck'' Hickman were too much for the Panthers. The Panthers led by 4 points at the end of the first quarter, but were defeated by a score of 95-74, Snowden was high with I7. MURRAY 65-WESLEYAN 60 Wesleyan led for 3 quarters before being de- feated 65-60 after Captain Rusty Shearer was called out on fouls early in the fourth period. It was ac.ose call for Murray, Lewis, Center HOMECOMING GAME WITH GEORGETOWN On February 14 the Georgetown Tigers in- vaded the Sportscenter floor to take another crack at the Panther hoopsters and to add to their prestige of earlier setting Wesleyan on her heels 74-73. They ran up against a much smoother ball club, and the Tigers went home with another loss. It was a team victory. WESLEY AN-BELLARMINE The Knights from Louisville put on a show on their home court and kept the Panthers in arrears for the greater part of the game. Early in the game Wesleyan trailed by as much as 10 points. Abernathy was high with 30 points. WESTERN-WESLEY AN Western gave Wesleyan it's worst defeat in the history of the school by subduing the basketeers of ''Bullet'’ Wilson 108-69. The Panthers were off in every department while the Hilltoppers were just the opposite. In winning the K.I.A.C. Tournament, the Pan- thers added another ''4 ' to their list. The repertoire of the choir is varied each year so that in four years’ participation, each student has sung music of many types in both the sacred Kentucky, appearing in churches and high schools. This year's tour included central and western Kentucky. The choir per- formed in more than thirty concerts in Louisville, Shelbyville, Lexington, Hender- and secular fields. Emphasis is placed upon sacred works with present-day signifi- cance, but old literature is utilized to a large extent. The singers each year tour sections of 70 son, Marion, and many other representa- tive Kentucky cities and towns. Music of all types is read through, and selection is made on the basis of group approval. This year an all-male quartet was formed. The quartet sang at the concerts on tour and also for school functions. From the chorus was also selected a special group to sing at the formal chapel services. All groups are available for concert throughout the year. The groups have been active in several! community services, and have cooperated with local organizations in the presentation of special programs calling for chorus performances.
