mr. pogerfd, e grafefu! y eizbecbca fe wid 5004 ln the past two years the hearts of all Kensing- tonians have learned to cherish one person. We are proud to dedicate the i956 Compass to this man, who is our principal, Garnett F. Roberts. Mr. Roberts, who was born on November l9, l886, in Alden, New York, was well acquainted with teacher-student relationships when he came to Kensington. He acquired this experience while teaching at Watkins Glen and Saratoga Springs, where he also coached football. Later he taught and was then appointed principal at Masten Park High School. Using his knowledge and warm gentleness, he has promoted our school activities with sincere in- terest, While he is striving to further our education and studies, he can always be seen at the football and basketball games, cheering our teams to vic- Mr. Garnett F. Roberts tory. Through his tireless efforts there have been marked physical improvements in Kensingtorfs makeup. How much brighter the school is with the public address system and the new coat of paint which were added this yearl Finding a few spare minutes from his busy schedule, Mr. Roberts is apt to use them for his hobby, by which he is classified as an amateur painter. Until recently he found enjoyment play- ing golf, and is still an enthusiastic fan. Although we show him how we feel by the wav we love and respect him, there is no better way to say this - in appreciation to a wonderful man - Thanks, Mr. Roberts. . . . Speak gently, let no harsh word mar the good we may do here - David Bates

'IM .9ntl'0Jll,Ce Our gkefne . . . THAT INTANGIBLE SUBSTANCE, GASES SO VITAL TO LIFE ON EARTH, THE AIR AROUND US, IS OUR THEME FOR THIS YEAR. AIR AFFECTS OUR EVERY MOVEMENT, FOR WITHOUT IT THERE WOULD BE DEVASTATION AND UTTER NOTHINGNESS. AN EMPTY EARTH VOID OF LIFE WOULD EXIST. THE BEAUTY OF THE SKIES WOULD BE LOST TO THE FLEETING IMAGINATION OF OUR CREATOR, AND THE REALITY OF CIVILIZATION MIGHT STILL BE A DREAM. JOHN RUSKIN SAID OF THE SKY, THAT IT IS: ALMOST HUMAN IN ITS PASSIONS, ALMOST SPIRITUAL IN ITS TENDERNESS, ALMOST DIVINE IN ITS INFINITY. AIR STORMS, BLOWS, DRIFTS, WHIRLS AND ROARS IN EMPHASIS OF ITS HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS. IT HAS WIND, RAIN, CLOUDS, THUNDER, LIGHTNING, FOG AND HAIL TO EXPRESS ITS MOODS. COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MEN WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE WITH- OUT AIR, FOR THE TELEGRAPH, TELEPHONE, RADIO, TELEVISION AND RADAR ALL DEPEND UPON AIR FOR TRANSMISSION. ALL SPEECH, SOUND AND MUSIC ARE DEPENDENT ON THIS SAME STUFF OF LIFE. MAN IS ETERNALLY REACHING UPWARD TOWARD THE HEAVENS FOR THE CULMINATION OF HIS ACHIEVEMENTS. HIS UTOPIA IS THE GREAT BEYOND. THUS FAR, HE HAS ONLY TOUCHED UPON THIS ZENITH THROUGH AIR TRAVEL AND AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLED MISSILES, THUS, IN SUMMARY, IT MAY BE SAID THAT AIR IS LIFE, FOR EVERYTHING ANIMATE AND HERBACEOUS RESULTS FROM THE EXIST- ENCE OF AIR. 6
