. WE GRATEFULLY DEDICATE THIS BQOK We, the graduating class of l954, are proud to dedicate this year book to Mr, Axlerod and Mr. Hayes, Kensington's co-assistant principals, to express our appreciation and gratitude for their unselfish and unbiased administration. These two noble men have collaborated with harmony because they have astonishingly similar ideals of education. Mr. Axlerod believes that the purpose of an educa- tion is to develop a responsible citizen , Mr. Hayes, that it is to enable one to take a responsible place in a democracy. Mr. Axlerod is happy about his transfer to Kensington last year, he considers it a wonderful experience with the children and faculty. Partici- pating in sports himself and deeply interested in people, he urges students to strive for scholarships, to become identified with the community through political, social, athletic, and religious activities. Mr. Axlerod loves outdoor life, camping, chess, and television and enjoys summer with his family at the lakeshore. He is doing graduate work at the Uni- versity of Buffalo for a Doctorate in Education. We shall always remember the faith Mr. Axlerod has in the modern generation, his belief that we are healthier, better informed and educated, better behaved, and likely to become better persons than our predecessors. All through our lives we shall respect his high ideals and persistently weave them into our pattern of life, Mr. Hayes has been very successful in arousing our enthusiasm for the democratic and social func- tions of our school. His interests lie in sports, records, and young people, his educational pursuits include earning a Doctor of Education degree at the University of Buffalo. Sincerely, he believes that our generation is more generous, enthusiastic, and interested in various activities than his own and is comparably cooperative and willing. All through the year he has been an advisor, an exponent of democracy, and a friend. What we have learned from his examples of indefatigable endeavor, initiative, cooperation, and perseverance manifested by the dances, attractive cafeteria dec- orations, and the formation of a Student Council, we shall practice in the future. We have assumed the responsibilities related to these privileges. This is in accordance with Mr. Hayes' theory of education: The success of our educational pro- gram is determined by the success with which our young people are trained to take their places as morally, socially, and civically responsible citizens in a democracy. To succeed in this aim the school should teach democracy not merely by precept but also by example. When we leave Kensington we will take all our precious memories with us. Among these will be the kindness, helpfulness, consideration, and under- standing of Mr. Axlerod and Mr. Hayes. With their moral support backing our generation we shall face the challenge of life without fear. The words of a man's mouth are deep waters, The fountain of wisdom is a gushing stream.
