The principal purpose of this department is to teach students to read, write, speak and listen to English with understanding and enjoyment. Litera- ture, composition, grammar, and vocabulary are taught. Everything from Johnny Tremain to Hamlet, from syntax to sonnets, makes the study of our Miss Dorothy Picrman, Librarian Mother tongue interesting and informative to all ot us. The aim ot our tour year course in English is to develop our ability to speak and write with graceful- ness and fluency, and also to understand and appre- ciate our modern media ot communication, such as magazines, newspapers, radio and television. DRAMATICS In her drama and public speaking classes Miss O'Meara strives to perfect the art ot oratory in her pupils. Pantomime and improvisations are humorous and valuable essentials ot a day's course. Thus more of Ken's students are able to speak with the tones, depth, and grace ot the clearest brook and the deepest ocean. LIBRARY The steadily growing circulation of books and the increasing attendance in the library are deserved tributes to the numerous special services rendered by our indetatigable librarian, Miss Dorothy Pierman. With the cooperation of the monitors, the bulletin boards have attracted attention to new and timely displays ot books. The library has become a vital part of Kensington High School. l-4

GUIDANCE OFFICE This year we welcomed two new girls' guidance counselors, Miss Corcoran and Miss Langner have aided Kensington girls in solving many problems. With Mr, McMahon, boys' counselor, they assist students in planning post-high school education, securing part-time work, and selecting the proper courses of study. Their advice and encouragement have been invaluable. Both boys and girls appre- ciate the services of the guidance office. Numerous students have profited by the interest inventories and mental abilities tests offered by the guidance department. In addition, the counselors have presented expert speakers on various careers, have informed upper classmen of open house pro- grams, and have provided information concerning scholarships in colleges and universities. Mr. Thomas Mountain, Mr. Angelo Gianturco. SCIENCE Scientifically inclined students have a great educational opportunity at Kensington. The science college entrance course offers such challenging subjects as Biology, General Science, Physics, Chem- istry, and Radio. The excellent teachers present the MATH Nearly every knowledge-thirsty student at Ken- sington has studied one of the mathematics subjects, for this branch of learning nourishes the mind and stimulates curiosity, Algebra - elementary, inter- mediate, and advanced, plane and solid geometry, SEATED: Miss Mary Stcuclle, Miss Virginia Mayer, Mr. Martin Larrabee. subjects in a lucid and attractive manner employing all the facilities available. Various clubs have been formed for interested pupils who desire to augment their scientific knowledge and to learn by doing. EMATICS and trigonometry develop logical thinking and pre- vent absurd conclusions. We all agree that the knowledge we gain in our math classes is as powerful as the turbulent waves of the ocean.
