valedictory . . . Graduation! The occasion that so long has seemed but a vision has now become a reality. This, one of the happiest events in our lives, also fills us with a feeling of deep regret. Accompanying the joy of com- mencement is the sad task of bidding fare- well to our Alma Mater, Kensington. When we began high school four years ago, we were insignificant freshmen to whom the prospect of senior year and grad- uation seemed to be in the far future. Yet, the years have swiftly slipped into the past, and we now stand upon the threshold of the future. lt is our duty to advance with confidence and courage, fortified by the ideals which we have learned at Kensing- ton. Realizing our obligation to our country and to society, we shall employ our know- ledge for the betterment of the world. This is our responsibility, for we are the future. The word valedictory traces its etymology back to the Latin words, vale and dicere. Vale was a customary Roman manner of bidding farewell, and dicere means to say. Hence, the primary purpose of a vale- dictory is to bid or say farewell. That is what we, the graduation class of l953, must do tonight. To you, Mr. Chassin, our most esteemed principal, we offer a heartfelt thank-you and goodbye. We wish to express our sin- cere gratitude for your inspiration, guid- ance, and the high ideals that you possess. You have encouraged us always to strive for the best, ever conscious of the standards which we should maintain. We also wish to thank you, Mr. Axlerod, for your con- tinuous inspiration and advice. ln your first year as assistant principal of Kensington you have most ably demonstrated an under- standing of young people and their prob- lems. We are indeed fortunate to have had at the head of our school two men with such high ideals and such a genuine en- thusiasm for education. To our teachers, so patient and under- standing, we say an affectionate farewell. During the past four years you have tried to prepare us to face the future, undaunted and unafraid. You have planted within us the seed of knowledge, it remains for us to cultivate it and bring it to fruition. On this eventful occasion we also wish to thank our parents and our guardians, who have stood steadfastly by us and cheer- ed us in success as well as in failure. Your constant faith and confidence have helped us to achieve this educational milestone to- night, Now we must direct our thoughts toward the future. Graduation is not the end of the pathg it is merely a stepping-stone to a much broader life that we have yet to face. We are leaving our Alma Mater, but we shall carry with us an abundant treasure of memories, We fervently hope that those who succeed us at Kensington will cherish her as dearly as we have and will help to add to her renown. presenting . . . officers of 1953 Senior Officers Seated: Aglaia Economou, Vice-President, David Seitz, Presidentg Ruth Critzke, Secretary. Standing: Richard Hall, Boys' Marshal, Robert Butler, Treasurer, Barbara Bottomley, Girls' Marshal. President-David Seitz Probably the most versatile member of our class is Dave Seitz. When he isn't studying to maintain a high scholastic record, Dave is participating in athletics, debate or dramatics. This four year man excels in cross country and was a member of this year's prize swimming team. He likes pizza and especially mayonnaise cake! Dave's pleasant manner, which has won him many friends, will undoubtedly influence his future career in engineering. Vice-President-Aglaia Economou A winning smile, smart dresser, pleasant personality, all describe Aggie Ever since her Freshman year, she has con- tinued to win friends and influence our school. We will never forget the fine work she did in dramatics and debate. Since studying French. she has added another language to English and her native Greek. We hope that the years to come will bring much joy and prosperity to Aglaia. Treasurer-Robert Butler Our very conscientious treasurer has given much to Ken through his athletic abilities. As co-captain, he led the cross- country team to victory, winning All-High honors for himself. Mr. Butler is a fraternity man and he is socially popular throughout the school. We are very glad to know him and have him handle our money. Best wishes and much happiness to you always, Bob. Sec reta ry-Ruth C-ritzke Ruth's cheerful attitude and mature char- acter have made her an officer for two years. Maintaining a high average keeps her busy, but she always has time for her countless friends. Through her piano and organ playing, Ruth has given us many hours of pleasure. Lunch is perhaps her favorite subject. Oh, those egg salad sandwichesl We hope that Ruth will someday earn her Master's in education. lThat is if she doesn't get another kind of degree firstll Boys' Ma rshal-Richard Hall A leader, an athlete, an admirable person - Dick is all of these. His quiet, assuring manner has made him known and liked by everyone. We will long remember his prowess in football games, at track meets and on the basketball court. This year he was captain of the basketball team. Dick's athletic ability and personality will be missed at Ken lespeciallv by a certain coachl. We are certain that he will do well. Ci rl s' Ma rsha l--Ba rba ra Bottomley Our Miss Bottomley is known to all her fellow students for her enthusiasm and gen- eral interest in every school activity. She has taken part in dramatics, debate, music and also in athletics. Whenever there is a game, rehearsal or meeting, you can be sure to see Barbie there. She has held offices in many clubs and this year she is president of Siempre Amigas Hi-Y.
