BFNIAMIN f XYIIIIQ SIIIIPI 1111011110111 Last September Dr Benjamin C Wrllrs assumed the duties of Superrntendent of Buffalo schools Dr Wrllrs and hrs famrly came here from Yonkers New York where he was held rn the highest regard as an educator He studred at varrous rnstrtutrons of hrgher learning but recerved hrs degree as Doctor of Education at Columbia Unrversrty In hrs visits and assocratrons wrth our schools Dr Wrllrs has been pleased and impressed with the enthusiasm and cooperation shown by teach ers and students alrke He and hrs famrly wrsh to express their gratitude for the courtesres and krndnesses extended to them by the crtrzens of Buffalo Hrs outside interests are many and drversrfred but he especially enioys fishing whenever the rnterscholastrc contests hrs particular favorrte The sportsmanship exhrbrted by players and spectators alike in the heavy rain at this years Bennett Kensington football game greatly lm pressed hrm Dr Wrllrs believes least partially due to the expansion of educational opportunities during the past decade He contends that rf the present pattern of 12 years of educatron were to become the mrnrmum rather than the maxrmum many additional improvements would follow Currently rn Buffalo only 2700 seventeen year olds are in school whrle 4500 sixteen year olds are registered This gives an rndicatron of the tremendous num ber of students who leave hrgh school before graduation One of the students greatest problems rs to understand clearly the relatronshrp between teacher and student which 15 to gurde and develop the growth of us who are to control the future Altogether too often the student mrs rnterprets the lessons of schooldays as a useless nagging rather than a creatrve polishing If the mass of people who were school children 20 vears ago had realized that fact think how drfferent todays world might be How we get our youth objectives of educatron Dr Wrllrs marntarns that thrs will be achreved only throught the ooperatron of the students with therr parents and teachers Thus we will protect and preserve Jur freedoms and expand our respect for dem Jcracys prrceless heritage Por every rrght there rs an rndrvrdual responsrbrlrty and we must re spect our responsrbrlrty We here at Kensington offer Dr Wrllrs our sincere congratulatrons on the manner rn which he has rntegrated the manrfold duties of hrs Jffrce and w1sh hrm a long and successful career rn the Crty of Good Neighbors ai, f . 1 1 A I Aa JJ L . y Q, 1 ' , y 1 . . . . . , ' . . . Our Deputy Superlntendent has led a very colorful llfe Pe was born on a farm ln Ohxo and recelved hxs elementary educatlon IH the llttle country school house After teachlng sxx years ln hlS home state he came to New York and taught flrst rn Rome then ln Schenectady came to Buffalo The call of educatlon however was not the reason for h1s commg here During the Flrst World War Mr Good was a paymaster In the Unlted States Navy It was ln th1s capacity that he was statloned ln Buffalo From then on he was a commerclal teacher at Hutchlnson Hlgh he was a conflrmed Buffalonlan For ten years School F01 many years he served on the com mlttee for the preparatlon of our examlnatlon papers ln both the elementary and the secondary schools From 1923 to 1948 Mr Good was a lecturer 1n Accounting and Buslness Education at Mlllard Flllmore College and the Unlversxty of HARRY I I OOD Deputy Supermtendent Buffalo In 1933 he was appo1nted to the Depart ment of Commerclal Educatlon ln the Board of Educatlon He served ln the post for four years and then became Assistant Superlntendent to Dr Bapst Mr Good holds the degrees of B C S from New York Unlversxty B S from the Um versxty of Buffalo and M A also from the Umverslty of Buffalo The educatlonal assocla tlons in whlch he has membershlp are New York State Teachers Association Associated Prlnclpals of New York State Councll of School Superm Teachers Assoclatlon of whlch he acted as Secretary from 1932 to 1938 and as Presldent ln 1939 and the National Educatlon Association In 1919 our genlal Deputy Superlntendent married a Buffalo glrl and together they raised two flne chlldren Mr Good enjoys traveling by automoblle and campmg Hls favorite spots for amplng are xn the Alleghenles and the Adlron dacks He also enJoys playxng golf Other sports whlch Mr Good takes pleasure 1n playlng are basketball and volleyball and he hkes to watch hockey .
