V-E DAY May 8, T945 was V-E Day, The day on which The barbaric Nazis ac- knowledged Their Tinal deTeaT, The day which leTT Japan as our soliTary enemy: The day Tor which millions oT courageous Allies, ba+h miliTary and civilian, had sacriTiced Their very lives. General Jodl's surrender was a pledge oT Tree-dom Tor every man, woman and child living in Europe. In The sTreeTs oT The UniTed STaTes There were crowds oT exciTed, iubil- anT people: buT The maioriTy remained aT sTill-essenTial war jobs or wor- shipped aT Their churches. Over The babble oT exciTed voices and rau- cous horns The church bells rang Their summoning chanT and millions re- sponded. Kneeling in audible prayer or sTanding in silenT TribuTe They gave Thanks To God Tor The TerminaTion oT The European parT oT The warg realizing ThaT an enemy sTill exisTed in The Far EasT. The knowledge ThaT Japan sTill resisTed dimmed The horns and quieT- ed The clamor oT The gay celebranTs. Thousands oT American TighTing men sTill ToughT and died on Okinawa and The oTher approaches To To- kyo. For Them There was no V-Day. There was only TighTing and Then more TighTing. BUT There was a hope Tor a Tinal V-Day-a V-J Day which would reTurn Them To Their beloved homes-a V-J Day well wiThin The sighT oT all since May 8, 1945. T
