QR EE x lib-D E E, Rlp De Hmkle KNOW you never have heard the st0ry of the other Rlp He was m many respects lnke Rlp Van Wrnkle Hrs name was Rlp De Hnnkle He and hrs wife kept a llttle tavern m the vlllage of Lodn ln the state of Marne They had no chlld but had what was to them as dear as one I was a very clever llttle dog named Dutch One day Rlp De Hmkle took hrs gun and dog and started for the woods m hope of findmg some game for hrs tavern He dld not have to go far for all the country around was a forest After passmg over several stone fences and through a few fields he came to hls destlnatlon The sky was cloudmg up and It was beglnnmg to look like ram Rlp was worried for he dls Presently ram began to fall and Rlp beganlook mg for a place of shelter As he stumbled through the woods he came to an old oak tree that had been chopped down but had not been dlsposed of because It was hollow Rlp made good use of hrs find by squeezmg mto It bemg careful to put hls gun IH out of the ram The ram kept commg faster and heavler Fmally lulled by the patter of the drops Rlp soon fell asleep How long he slept there he could not tell but hxs stomach told hlm that lt had not been a cat nap As the ram had ceased and It was gettmg hght m the east he reasoned that he had slept ln hrs snug shelter all mght Thlnk mg that he would go home and appease hrs hunger he tned to pull hlmself out but alas the log had become swollen by the ram and he was held prlsoner In hrs anxrety he wondered where his dog had gone After calllng for some time he decided that Dutch had deserted In reahty Dutch had gone home On the other hand Mrs De Hlnkle was very anxrous about the palr and even more so when the dog arrived alone She gave Dutch a hearty breakfast and afterwards followed hlm to the prrson Mrs De Hlnkle was notan expernenced wood cutter but after a great deal of trouble she managed to free the prisoner with the ald of an axe These two people were very happy to thlnk that they owned such a smart dog and to show there appreclatron they bought a pretty llttle collar and had the name Dutch engraved on the small sllver plate After this experlence ln the log Rap made a resolutlon never agaln to protect hlmself from the ram ln a hollow log ELMI' R DICCINS The Challenge She has a wonderful xmaglnatlonl Over and over came that lnsbrrmg thought and most of all F E Klmg prlnclpal of the Kendallvllle Hlgh School had sald rt Although the past two hours I could not translate one me Surely I can be as great as Caesar hlmself wlthout translatlng thls fourteenth chapter In years to come my works shall be studled and outllve even hls great deeds for I am wonderfully talented I have only to close my eyes and my lmagmatron brxngs forth a plcture of anythmg I deslre wlthout the sllghtest effort But thls Hrs Caesar lta respondlt Eo s1b1 mmus dublta tlonls darl I bent my head lower over my book but the words were a hopeless blurr before my tlred eyes and before I was aware I found myself seated ln a dark cave gazmg mto a fllckermg flre Suddenly from the flames arose a grlm hgure wlth one hand extended cordxally toward me and ln a voxce full of prlde he sard I am the Kmg of Imagmatlon and have summoned you hither to test the ablllty of sald wonderful tal ent If I find you efficlent you shall become queen of my realm and tread the earth clothed ln fame If not you are condemned to study tontmually Caesars Oalllt Wars recltmg every day the fourteenth chapter Thls lb my challenge Do you accept' Filled with prlde I nodded for had not Prof Klmg sand my nmagmatlon was wonderful' Very well he contmued I shall call my Pun thirty F 2 5 2 4 .
