DEDICATION Many graduates will always remember the years 1960-61 for the wonderful record Kelvin had in sports. This Yearbook is dedicated to two of the more outstanding of her teams, the Football Team and the Senior Girls’ Basketball Team. This year the football trophy returned to Kelvin after too long an absence. The main reasons for its return were good coaches, a group of tough players, and not the least important — an earnest desire to win, on the part of the entire school. Much of the credit must, of course, go to the spectators and cheer¬ leaders who, on those cold, hard seats, suffered and rejoiced right along with the team. But the real credit goes to the boys who played their hearts out in the wind, rain, dust and mud, for Kelvin. The students had great hopes for the “men in red” this year and they were not disappointed. When all of the Kelvin spec¬ tators ran out onto the field at the end of the last and most important game, they were showing their ap¬ preciation for the wonderful effort that the Clippers had made. The Senior Girls’ Basketball Team upheld the honour of the female population of Kelvin. Selected on a “survival of the fittest” basis, only the hardier ones survived the rigorous training period. These members made a tough team to beat, suffering only one setback on their way to first place. That this group won the championship is indicative of the ex¬ cellent coaching the girls received and of the great determination of the team. It has been said that Kelvin girls always do well in basketball. This particular tradition of the school was kept alive by a fine group of girls who merely had to follow in the footsteps of the former championship teams. The football and basketball teams have given the students of Kelvin reason to be extremely proud of their school. They are, however, only symbolic of the spirit that extends to all Kelvin activities, the spirit that makes championship teams possible, the spirit that keeps “Kelvin’s colours up on high.” Thus Kelvin students excel in all facets of school activity, music, sports, and scholarship, because of this spirit that enables us to say with feeling, “We’re a wonderful team, the Kelvin Team!” Linda Vincent 2

PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE YEARBOOK FOREWORD 13E0-B1 As you leaf madly through these pages to discover what justice the photographer has done your features, and what libel the class scribe has perpetrated against your good reputation, pause to reflect that this Kelvin Yearbook 1960-1961 edition, is the year’s record of yet another chapter in the school’s long and illustrious history. Since you and your fellow students have written this chapter the year’s success is yours. September and June are so close together. Yester¬ day, in September, I met student assemblies of eager, enthusiastic young men and women anticipating another exciting period of school activity. Today, in June, I write a short introduction to the record of that period. Has the year been memorable for you, for the school? You, yourself, can answer best what you have gained and it will be the measure of what you have given. I shall attempt to answer for the school by noting highlights of the year and impressions gathered. Learning is our main goal at Kelvin. Many of you have grown both in academic stature and in living experience. A few I hope have learned from the ex¬ perience of the past year that greater rewards come only from greater effort. On the whole this year’s student body has measured up well to the high scholastic attainment of Kelvin classes of the past. The Grade XII classes of 1960-1961 have estab¬ lished a record in numbers and in overall achievement. It has been a pleasure to have them as our graduate students. In every aspect of school life this grade has provided leadership. An outstanding president, leads in the opera, all-stars in sports teams, editor of year¬ book and school newspaper are but some of the con¬ tributions Grade XII has made to Kelvin this year. These classes have been a steadying influence to the under-graduates and have given a mature tone to the school. I hope that Kelvin has given them the preparation and the confidence which they need to go on to broader fields of study and endeavour. The undergraduates, Grades X and XI, have carried their full share in making 1960-61 a memorable year in the annals of Kelvin. From September to June the all-out performance of the whole school has resulted in one successful project after another. Long years of hard work, careful building and Kelvin spirit, brought the rugby championship back to Kelvin. The girls’ senior basketball championship came back home. Performances of “THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD,” an ambitious undertaking, brought fresh laurels to the school’s reputation for good music. The “Et Cetera” reached new heights in tone and content under the year’s newspaper staff. Space does not permit individual mention of valiant groups and students who toiled hard only to miss the heights. It has indeed been a memorable year for Kelvin. Kelvin will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 1961-62. Next year’s classes will have a major role to play in making the celebration a truly golden page in Kelvin’s history. I know that we can depend on them. Let this be my invitation to you, the graduating class, to be with us again on this happy occasion. Farewell and good fortune, until we meet again. R. J.
