Bob McGill PRESIDENTS REMARKS As the year draws to a close we, the students and citizens of Kelvin, can look with pride upon our achievements over the past scholastic year. Not only has Kelvin led the way in academics but also in music and athletics. In the fall our undaunted football team won a hard fought battle against our arch-rivals the Daniel Mc¬ Intyre Maroons after a very successful season to claim the city and provincial championships. As the basketball season drew to a close every Kelvin team was found in first place and the girls’ senior team went on to cla im the city championship. Track-wise Kelvin once again led the way. Such groups as the U.N. Club, the Nuclear Dis¬ armament Club, the Science Club and the Senior Red Cross as well as several other groups deserve much credit for the large part they have played in developing our future Canadian citizens. In the field of music Kelvin’s operetta and several choirs and ensembles enjoyed more success than ever before. I would like to congratulate the Grade Twelve Committee on a job well done. These capable few have done much to make Grade Twelve a more re¬ warding and more interesting transition year into university. During the year six major dances were held under the very capable direction of the social committee and all proved exceptionally successful. In closing I would like to thank our vice-president John Wilson, our secretary Lynn Stratton and the council for their very capable assistance throughout the year. Bob McGill, President. 6

VICE-PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TD THE GRADUATES OF KELVIN SEHOOL There are three ways in which to describe your relationships to other people. Two of them are ex¬ tremes, and the third is the mean between them. Under one extreme, anarchy, you may do as you like, provided you can. You are responsible for your actions to yourself alone and are not interested in how they affect other people. Under the other extreme, slavery, you may never do as you like, but only as you are told. You are not expected to show any personal initiative. Somewhere between these two extremes, there is a third way of life—democracy. You have freedom of choice, limited by your responsibilities to others. Don’t place so much emphasis on freedom of choice that you ignore responsibility for its consequences. Always consider what effect your actions will have on others. Your task is to maintain a balance between the freedom of the individual on the one hand, and the welfare of society on the other. We can and do measure your achievement in mathe¬ matics, history and science. There are other more intangible achievements that are not so easily measur¬ ed. As students of Kelvin you have had an excellent chance to obtain high academic achievement. But we, as teachers, are interested in your full develop¬ ment. We feel that in such a school system as ours, you have had ample opportunities to develop mentally, spiritually, physically, and socially. Kelvin is a great school—none better. You hold its good name in your hands, for by your lives will Kelvin be judged. We are confident that its reputation is in good hands. This year’s crop of graduates is one of which we are justly proud. See you next year at our fiftieth anniversary—Good Luck, and Best Wishes. F. A. Hodgkinson, Vice-Principal (June 1961). 5
