WML 602 S I I I 5 H. lt is with deep and sincere appreciation that we, the class of 1957, dedi- cate our yearbook to a teacher, adviser, and friend, who has spent many extra hours helping our class and our school. The pride he has taken in his work has resulted in many excellent school organizations. Through his out- standing work the name of Keene High School has been heard throughout the Eastern United States by people in all walks of life. It is with much pleasure, then, that we dedicate the 1957 SALMAGUNDI to you, Mr. Robert M. Cook. s 1 :aswmi , . 1 , Ours is an age of discovery, of invention. Out of a glorious heritage of the Past has come an even more glorious Present, dynamic with' teeming energy and glowing vitality, gazing ever hopefully into the unknown Future bright with the promise of achievement. Thus, we the youth of today and the adults of Tomorrow, exultantly reach out our hands to grasp the key to the Future. We were born beneath the dark cloud of a grim warg yet, behind the cloud, shone a star, an omen of the greatness that lies within our reach. The class of 1957 is the first class to graduate under the six-three-three- system. It is significant to us that during our brief span of life have come many inspiring '6firsts in all pathways of the arts and sciences. For the theme of our yearbook we have chosen one of these, TELEVISION, which has turned its eye-and the eyes of millions-upon many scenes of the great drama of Life that exists in and around us. Even so, the 1957 SALMACUNDI directs the camera of the mind to the life and spirit and activities in Keene High School during the year 1956-1957 through a close-up shot of typical scenes and of those who direct them, of the cast of characters, and the roles they play. So then-Lights! Action! Camera-focused on the students of JCM Editor-in-Chief Assistant Editor our school . . . V f f I f7 Vawpdzeddqtde Iv . l LAUREN CE 0. THOMPSON Superintendent 0 f Schools A.B., Ed.M. Bates College To the class of 1957: Although this word of greeting is addressed to you as a class, I intend it for each member of the class. To you I can offer no advice which will guarantee your success and happi- ness. Even if l knew such advice it would be of little value to you. The fullness of your life will depend on you and you alone. The life into which you are graduating becomes increasingly complex. Much hard work will be required of you, sound judgment, infinite patience. If Keene High School has helped develop the habits and attitudes which these things require, it has fulfilled its purpose. That this has happened to you is the sincere hope of Your friend, 0 JZ EDWARD A. SILLARI Assistant Superintendent of Schools B.Ed., Ed.M. Plymouth Teachers College Unlversity of N. H. '1'1 ,4 ,. To the graduates of the class of 1957: I have an invitation to write a few words-meaningful ones. This is an opportunity which deserves my most careful attention. What can I say that will make a difference to a graduate of the class of 1957-make a difference today, tomorrow, and in the years to come? What gem of wisdom, from the wealth of experience which is our heritage or from the limited experience which is personal, can I focus upon for your benefit? What can it be-that will cause you to read it-to remember it-to dwell upon it-to he influenced by it? Over and over I ponder. I choose. I discard. Finally, I have it. I know what I will say-in a language you understand. Read it. Remember it. Think about it. I know it can make a difference. BE WILLING TO DO MORE THAN YOU ARE PAID FOR. DO THIS, AND SUCCESS IS INEVITABLE. May good fortune smile upon each of you. fm .X 2 , 3 C f HAREQE F. DREW Principal B.S., Ed.M. Middlebury College Harvard University To the class of 1957: You come now to the end of your high school days and simultaneously to the end of your childhood. Henceforth, the world looks upon you as adults, prepared and ready to take your several places in the life of the community. I believe you are so prepared and ready. If you will just do an honest day's 'vork every day, no matter in what field, I have every confidence in your f -,future success. .24 .. Keep your minds open to learning. It is the glory of Cod to establish mysteriesg it is the right of kings to search the matter. We shall sincerely miss you as you graduate from this school, but you will never graduate from our memories or from our hearts. ,Auf ja A Lf' flu MARGARET D. SENIOR SCRIPT The stars of the 1957 season have had the shortest road to stardom in the history of Keene High School. Although it was the first class to attend Keene High for only three years, because of the new Junior High setup, its members are by no means lacking in talent. As understudies, they contributed much to our baseball, football, and basketball teams. Coached by their advisers, Mrs. Mousley and Mr. Mitchell, they sponsored many festive dances and helped actively to support all school functions. Promoted to supporting roles, the class of '57 began to gain renown. Their first prom, Symphony in Pink, is one they will remember with pride. For the first time Keene High School was represented at both Boys' Nation and Girls, Nation. Bonnie Price and Kurt Schmidt were the fortunate two. Now at last in the spotlight, they have received many honors. The first Keene High student to win the New Hampshire Voice of Democracy Contest, Gary Baker, deserves special recognition. Competing with four other lovelies: Marygrace Desco- teaux, Nancy Bradley, Barbara Whitcomb, and Bonnie Price, Martha Perry was chosen queen. Crowned at the beautiful Moonlight Melody Ball, Martha made a lovely queen. Urged on by their class officers and directed by Miss Ritchie and Mr. Perkins, they have done much to uphold high standards of scholarship and traditions. The stars of '57 will long be remembered for their many thrilling performances throughout the year, and, when they receive their life contracts, the diplomas, they will be well up the glittering ladder of success and ready to display their abilities before the cameras of life. Vepres atives, the members of the junior class have played very active parts in J, this asonis productions. , fj The juniors are active in all phases of school life, and valuable talent has been discovered in many fields. They are outstanding in our literary publications: SALMAGUNDI, Informer, and Enterprise. They have also proved their capabilities in both boys' and girls' sports programs. They have had major supporting roles in the Voice of Democracy Contest, the Queenis Court, the American Legion Oratorical Contest. The A Cappella Choir and the WKHS-TV Band, whose superb performances have received many rave notices, include many juniors. A well- known personality is Sandra Barden, who has won national recognition for her poetry. With the encouragement received from the critics, we feel sure that the juniors, today's supporting actors and actresses, will shine brilliantly as the next seasonis stars. I 'XJ A Wlima 1 fg, ,! 1- N One of the most important topics in the television world this year is the successful sophomore show. Those who were only extras last year have been promoted to understudies at WKHS-TV and are certainly paving their way for stardom in 1959. They owe part of their high rating to Peter Barrett, president, Cary Wyman, vice presidentg Wendy Waling, secretaryg and Norma Perreault, treasurer. Upper- classmen have nothing but praise for these young hopefuls. Sophomores have appeared in many worthwhile programs. Sports fans have recognized their ability and have especially admired the tremendous work of Cross Country State Champ, Peter Fletcher, and all viewers have watched the new varsity cheerleader, Norma Perreault. ln front of the cameras also, other members of the class have participated in the Debating Club, Dramatic Club, and have been hard at work as members of both Enterprise and Informer staffs. Several sopho- mores have shown marked ability in instrumental and vocal fields, and much praise is also due the latest Ushers Club discoveries. If these sophomores study their scripts and continue their hard work next year, they will land major roles in many of the 1958 productions. V I 1 l K 4 N.. X ' x C. Wyman, Vice Presidentg N. The premiere of one hundred seventeen freshmen was announced this fall be- cause of the overcrowded conditions at WKJHS-TV. The members of the cast were obviously quick to learn because they immediately fell into their roles as extras in the program of WKHS-TV, Keene. Part of their high rating is due to their four accompanying directors: Mrs. Charlotte Beauregard, Miss Frances McCushing, Mr. Harold Bridge, and Mr. Claude Leavitt. Not only did they do their required work but also took part in band, orchestra, sports, Enterprise, Glee Club, and Informer. Their orange and black uniforms painted a gay picture on the field during half time when the band entertained the spectators with thrilling exhibitions. Once again the band performed in the annual Firemen's Parade in October. Because of the work of the band council, a trip was made to Groton, Connecticut, for an exchange concert with the Groton High Band. The primary function of the DRAMATIC CLUB is to afford the best in dramatic pres- entations for the high school and the com- munity. The club hopes to give each member of its organization the opportunity to express himself in the phase of dramatic work for which he is most suited. ln November of the '56-'57 season the de- lightful comedy Two Blind Mice was given and was followed soon after hy our traditional Christmas play, The Miracle Star, which was written by Wayne Miskelly. Other programs during the year included one-act plays per- formed at club meetings and special programs which were arranged to make possible a variety of activities for many participants. 3 PROPS Around piano: D. Despite this tremendous deficit. the birds went into every game with an over- whelming desire to come out victorious. As the season progressed, one thing be- came certain. Even though the boys couldn,t put together a single victory this year. they were building the foundation for Keene teams in the future. It takes a great love for football and a courageous, competitive heart to go all the way through a season such as Keene High experienced this year. Springing from this yearis team will be the stars of the future that will bring victories to Keene High and make every minute of this gruelling season worthwhile. The seniors whose courage, determination and leadership should be heralded were Ken Coolidge. Bob Sullivan, Cliff Channell, Artie Trombley, John MacAllister, Al Cuymond, and Co-Captains Walt Kosmo and Oscar Black.
