Beyond, the unknown ports are looming in the distance, enveloped, as yet, in the fog of the Future. Guided by numerous buoys and lighthouses warning of shoals and rocks, we have had smooth sailing this year. Capably piloted by our hehnsman, Alohn Bar- rett, Class President, and the ship's ofhcers, the ship has weathered and aged, along with its crew, but the flags are rippling valiantly, and all sails are unfurled. September-October-November: Longitude and I.atitude - The same as last year - XY'ash- ington by Spring Streets. Fair skies, good wind, few reefs or storm warnings encountered. These first months were spent in weighing anchor and getting under sail. W'ith a rather suc- cesful season on the gridiron, we were happy to see juniors make such an important contribu- tion to the game. December: Fair skies, good wind. Vife sponsored two record hops during Christmas Vaca- tion and thus swelled the golden coffers. january: With the entrance of janus and the ringing in of the new year, many of the class participated wholeheartedly in the annual Mid-Year Ball. both attending and assisting in decor- ating. This month we held the annual Oratorical Contest, sponsored hy the American I.egion. Out of four speakers chosen from the Puhlic Speaking Class, we were pleased to have two of them from the junior Class and very proud of XX'ayne Miskelly who took second place. March: Many of our class traveled to Durham this month to watch Our Boys play in the Basketball Tournament. Many of Keene's most exceptional players. we noted with interest and pride, were memhers of the Junior Class! June: Wfith the end of another year in these Halls of Ivy, we sponsored, as do the juniors every year, the junior-Senior prom. This, we think, was an outstanding success - one of the memories to he forever cherished hy graduates. This year you've seen us on the gridiron, in the Dramatic Cluh plays, in the hand and A Cappela Choir Concerts, on the haskethall court, writing for the SAI.MAGIfNDI, the IZNTIZR- PRISIZ, The INFORMIQRL you've seen us on the hockey held, on the hasehall diamond, de- hating, displaying artistic handiwork, speaking from the stage in the auditorium, or showing moyies in Room 56. XY'e have had a good year - we've successfully climhed another rung in the ladder of education, and rushed ahead to new horizons. Now, with sails unfurled, full speed ahead, we're nosing into the home stretch, reaching for that last goal in Keene Iligh, the donning of the cap and gown. lovxff-Ixgiagi-'s 1- x 1 i Hts, 'tr Room 1 Row 1: C. Piloted by co-captains Don Bedard and Stan Dambrouckas, they hit rough sailing with the powerful Panthers of Nashua, losing 28-0. They Hnally rode out the storm, having lost 6-0 to Concord, with an impressive 12-0 victory over Stevens of Claremont. Like a small, hut sturdy and deadly destroyer, they plodded on, facing the formidable foes of Dover and Bradley. Although outplaying their foes, they lost in the ebbing moments of battle by scores of 15-12 and 19-12 respectively. A veteran of rough sailing by this point, the light but fast Blackbirds swarmed over Laconia 28-6 and continued their high sailing. Invaded by the Red Raiders of Spaulding High, they turned them hack 19-12. Now with the end of the journey in sight, the spirited football crew of Keene High School's athletic fleet girded themselves for the traditionally tough Manchester Central. Meeting with a clash, the Flock sailed into port with an 8-0 victory to their credit and a worthy 4--1 record. Three of the crew were chosen for all-state honors: George lfckhard, lirnest Blastos, and Brian Houghton. George went on to achieve an honorable mention for the All-American high school team. Now the thunder of the bats piled up scores like Keene's 15-5 and 15-5 wins over Orange, Massachusetts. or their 15-1 triumph at Bellows- lfallsg now they were silenced as in the 10-0 defeat at Athol. Such veteran campaigners as Dave Donovan, Don Mackey. and Captain Bob XVhitcomb were showing the course, ably backed up by new-comets like jack Boyea and Gerry Metivier, whose brilliant and steady pitching was a highlight all season. A fair record of 8 wins and 7 losses was compiled for the season. After having split in two skirmishes with arch rival Nashua, winning 7-5, losing 3-0, Keene again met the Nashua club in the tournament playoff. Our boys piled up their highest run total of the season, winning 18-2. for a good start towards the state championship. But all of Keene's hopes were sunk by a S-5 bombardment by Laconia. Keene had to put in for dry dock for the year. where Coach Mulvaney will have to do a pretty big remodeling job for next year, with only about three real veterans returning. The keen interest of the sophomores, as well as that of the upper classmen, added to a suc- cessful sixtieth anniversary issue. Interesting journalistic contributions and outstanding art work coupled with the zealous work of the business board mark a well-put-out magazine. Girls ' State The 1955 Granite Girls' State was held the week of june 25 to July 1 on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. Among the 180 delegates were tifteen Keene girls who were chosen on the basis of scholar- ship, citizenship, and service. The girls were sponsored by various organizations in Keene. Educational highlights were talks from lidward D. Eddy, acting president of the university, Professor David C. Knappg Professor Robert Dishmang and Louis C. Wy'man, Attorney General of New Hampshire. The girls also enjoyed rallies, elections, paiama par- ties, and a stunt night. Everyone was proud when Gayl Ford was appointed a delegate to Girls' Nation which was held in Wash- ington, D. C. During the week several honors were bestowed upon Keene girls. Gayl Ford was elected secretary of the Federalist Party and a member of the Governor's Council, Polly Philbrick was elected head of the Fed- eralist Party and was appointed to the position of At- torney General, Sally Kershaw was appointed lNIessen- ger of the House, and Virginia Chase was appointed Fish and Game Director. Much of the knowledge gained at Girls' State will be of value when the girls take an active part in local, state, and national government. Profile Boys' State On june 19, 1955, Ronald Farina, George Eckhard, Carlton Russell, Anthony Redington, William Hayes, Mark Waltz, Daniel Kinney, Gary Howard, Guy Huntley, john Hanninen, and Stuart Osborn left as dele- gates to the American Legion sponsored Boys' State held at the University of New Hampshire at Durham. During the following week the boys experienced an extensive program dealing with governmental prin- ciples, federal, state, county, city and town. This program consisted of lectures and demonstrations, however, the boys still found time for recreation. Almost all of the boys held an oflice, either appointed or elected. The Keene delegation was honored when Guy Huntley was elected to the Govt-rnor's Council. Probably the highlight of the entire week was the thrilling experience of seeing and hearing President Eisenhower speak in Concord State Park. Row 1: G. Howard, G. Huntley, S. Osborn, G. Eckhard, C. On December 15, twenty-six choir members appeared on the television show Swanboat and appeared again in the early spring. Five choir members, Kurt Schmidt, Verne Colburn, Mer- ton Scadova, Toby Sheinfeld, and Virginia Chase took part in the All-State Festival with two hundred other singers from around the state. This was held in Keene on April 5 and 6 and was conducted by james Remley, Director of Music in Newton, Massachusetts.
