TUNIOR-ELLA Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Edu- cation, Iunior-Ella lived with her helpful father. As the years passed, her father brought a hard stepmother CKeene Highl with her two daughters, CHomework and Marksl, to live with her. Her stepmother was not cruel but very hard. She made poor Iunior-Ella get up at seven o'clock in the morning and go to school by eight. Poor Iunior-Ella! Homework was forever calling her to do some work, and Marks left her anything but peaceful. One day as Iunior-Ella was at one of her chores, she heard a notice by Ed Farina concerning a Kings Ball which was to be held. Iunior-Ella hoped and prayed with all her heart that someone from the football team - Co-captains Dave Bradley and Iim Kinney, Bob Soucy, Ken Koskela, Freddy Kosmo, Skip Martin, Francis Gallup, Bob of yOU? LULQBA .7 lmcif Yi! nexf year Shea, Bill Hewel, or Ronnie Patnode would ask her. She wanted to go very badly, but she didn't think that her two step- sisters CHomework and Marksb would let her. Then, she was suddenly interrupted by a loud shout from one of Homework's helpers, Mr. Mulvaney. She did not know her assignment very well, but that math brain, Paul Cloutier, came to her rescue. Suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone rapping, rapping gently at Room 20's door. Ot course, it was Margaret Grossi, Helen Bourassa, Ann White, Leah Medotl, Frances Warlick, and Ioan Priest clicking their magic typewriters. As Iunior-Ella was passing to her next chore, a swift breeze fRonnie Holbrook, Ed- rick Farina, Robert Wheeler, Ed Sullivanl ran by. Martha Conant yelling, Oh, Man, made her begin to chuckle like Smiley Chase. She passed that cute, long eye- lashed kid lHarriet FarrellI and those sharp dressers KNancy Roberts and Skipper Mar- tinI. She stopped at her junk closet ClockerI. Ronnie Ieflords was there helping his girl, Ioyce CSweetstuftI Burt with her books. Row I: E. Farina, G. Eaton, H. Heath, M. Ingalls, A. Frazier, B, Doody, R. Fisk, A. Fuller, W. Fealey, R. Hurd. Ieanne Coty and Iane Bailey, two terrific gals, greeted her with their special hella Before she got to her next chore she saw the double-Iays fIean and Ioan Fowlel, and right behind them, those inseparable buddies - Ioan Kent and Sandy Bemis. Then a shrill cry of Hi, Liz shouted by Bob Shea to Sonia Bardis came through the corridors. Three minutes was almost up so she hur- ried down the hall and entered the room. She motioned Nancy Curfew Burrill to hur- ry so she wouldn't be late. Another of Horneworks helpers fMr. I-lanleyl had to shut his door because those peppy cheer- leaders Marlene Miinch, Allison Osborn, Carolyn Thrasher, Dolly Stalbird, and Eve- lyn and Helen Robinson were making so much noise. After getting some gum from Margaret Dodge she attempted to throw the Wrapper into the basket, but missed. Of course, Iim Beckwith, Bobby Hemeon, Stan Gillis, Bob Freeman, Skip Martin, Dick Mackey, or Iim Kinney, members of our fine basketball squad, would have been willing to make the shot for her. Norma ang Oil we oclclfi are wiflz you Davis, a member of the queens court, helped Iunior-Ella with her homework. Two golden-haired sisters commonly known as the Bowlbys were signing date contracts. In the next few days, Iunior-Ella kept teasing Homework and Marks to let her go, but they wouldn't. Then suddenly, a fairy Godmother fMiss Saffordl with her kind brother ilvlr. Goberl appeared. They helped Iunior-Ella so that finally she was able to go. Iunior-Ella now wishes to thank her two wonderful advisers and class officers iPresi- dent Stan Gillis, Vice-President Sonia Bar- dis, Secretary Ed Sullivan, and Treasurer Dave Bradleyl for their help, hard work, and leadership. THE INFORMER Editor Business Manager Exchange Editor CONNIE HAWES BARBARA TAFT RUTH OIA The whole purpose of the Informer is summer up in its motto, By, For, and About the Students. It is written, set up, and printed by the students. It is for the stu- dents and is all about them. Included in the paper are editorials, re- ported news articles and features. One feature specialty of each issue is the personality of the month column which honors one person from each class who has done the most for his class. A person has never, so far, been chosen more than once. To become a member of the Informer staff a student must first write a trial article, so that his ability may be judged. If his work is satisfactory he becomes a staff member, and is given at least one assign- ment for each issue. He is responsible for seeing that all information is discovered and that the assignment is in on time. The Informer could not possibly get along without the co-operation of the corn- mercial department. Typing students type all the material in columns and send it back to the staff. Staff members then arrange the make-up of each page, and then the sten- cils are cut. These are turned over to the clerical practice class which completes the Work on the Informer. Here the paper is run off on the mimeograph machine, and each copy marked with the subscribers name. The last issue of each year is the Senior Issue in which superlatives, class Will, class prophecy, and ambitions are included. Members: C. Park, C. Collias, N. Swahnberg, M Perry, S. Thompson, C. ADVISORY COUNCIL President DONALD STONE Vice President GEORGE KBEGOS Treasurer ROBERT WILLIAMS Secretary CABOLYN PUTNAM Assistant Secretary IANE BECKWITH This years Student Council has been one of the most active in the history of Keene High. The council undertook several projects which proved to be profitable for both stu- dents and faculty. One of the first responsibilities the coun- cil assumed was the supervision of fresh- man elections. ln addition to helping with the actual voting, the council also helped the candidates plan their campaigns and design posters to help poll votes. The council did much to help popularize dancing within the school. Besides sponsor- ing and supervising afterfthe-game dances during football season, it also sponsored a dancing program in the gym during lunch periods. According to the preamble of its constitu- tion, the aims of the Keene I-ligh School Stu- dent Advisory Council are to promote good citizenship in the youth of our school and to encourage the practice of the con- cepts of true democracy . . . and to make our school ever better. This year's council certainly has fulfilled those aims. ur xelareaen fa, fiued it 0. Of course gradu- ation is an important event in the minds of the underclassmen and all ushers look CC forward to the Freshmen Reception, assem- blies, the Rotary Club play, the Dramatic Club play, and the annual Talent Show. Selection for membership in this club is usually held in the spring. Ten girls are selected by the club with the help of the head usher, the assistant head usher, and the club adviser, Mr. Richmond. The Ushers' Club is a popular club and many girls are desirous of membership. The club was extremely active this year. Among their money-raising projects were sales of food, orange and black beanies, and high school pencils. After the hard work of raising money the club enjoyed a very interesting trip which proved that their efforts had not been in vain. ' Along the entertainment line, many par- ties and outings provided the club members with enjoyable times. The Halloween party stands out in the minds of the club mem- bers as one of the biggest and best parties of the year. The D, E. Club has certainly done a won- derful job both in the field of Work and in enjoyment, While helping its members to become better citizens in the community. And that's just what the members of the Square Dance Club do. Under the able direction of Miss Murphy and Mr. Purbeck, the club, which is open to all students in high school, teaches the basic square dance calls and the various styles of square dances. The main objective, however, is to establish good social habits among the students. To aid beginners in learning, often part or all ot the record is devoted to instruction which is easily followed. The club has ap- proximately twelve albums ot the most pop- ular square dances. This year the club has a large number ot members. Two sets, made up ot eight members each, put on an exhibition at the Hobby Show. Another large group will par- ticipate in an exhibition at the Bicentennial Celebration this summer. The Square Dance Club certainly is a good way to make many new friends and to spend an enjoyable evening. President BRADLEY MARK Vice President ROBERT G. GENERAL SCIENCE CLUB The members of the General Science Club have been very busy this year learning much in the field of science that cannot be taught in the classroom, During the year the members visited sev- eral points of interest in Keene, including a trip to several of the more prominent fac- tories in town and also a very interesting and '.-.'orth-while visit to the Health Officers Cffice. Here they saw a water test in proge ress, which led many ot the members to conduct their own experiments. To realiy top off the year, the students took upon themselves the task of raising money for a trip to Benson's Animal Farm. The club went on a conservation tour in the spring. This years club has surely done its part in making science a more interesting and desirable subject. For this aggregation was the first track team in the history of K. l-l. S. to go undefeated through the entire season. They started the season by defeating Rutland in a dual meet and from there, they were off. The traclcsters won four big meets where teams competed from all over the state. There were the Manchester lnvitational Meet, the Laconia Kiwanis Meet, the Keene Rotary Meet, and then the big one at Durham, the State Championship. The team was paced all year long by its co-captains, Phil Hulslander and Phil Lang- try. Hulslander won both the lUO yard and 220 yard dash in the state meet. Another boy from Keene, namely Bruce Merrill, Won the state javelin throw. Other Keene men who figured prominently were Gerry Gos- lant, Phil Langstry, lim Langley, and Ed Sweet. This '52 squad is the second state cham- pion that Coach Iack Mayes has had in just four years. A grand ovation should go to Coach Mayes and his '52 champions. KEENE HIGH BASEBALL - 1952 Coach ARTHUR MULVANEY Captain AL KNOWLTON One of the most thrilling baseball seasons ended on the night of Iune 2, l952, when the never die Blackbirdsu lost to Nashua in the State Finals, 5-3. It was a season that may long be remembered by Keene fans because of the great spirit that the boys showed at all times. In the great season that saw the Keene Blackbirds Win fourteen and lose three for the overall record, there were many out- standing performances. Among these feats were Gene Seaver's phenomenal batting average of 478, a record that may stand for many years to come, Dave Columbuss ability to hit home runs that gave him the title of Dangerous Dave, Bill DiIulio's clutch home run at Vermont Academy in the ninth inning to give us a 6-5 victoryg Captain Al Know1ton's fine pitching that gave him a 10 and I record, Clncidentally, Al Won twenty-four games and lost only four in his high school careerl and last but not least was the game played at Fitch- burg. Keene was losing 8-O in the eighth inning, but came up with ten runs to win IO-8. Coach Mulvaney once remarked that this was not the greatest team he ever coached, but it was the fightingest team that gave him the most thrills. VARSITY FOOTBALL The Keene High Blackbirds were called out tor grid practice by Coach Hanley the last week in August. Up until Armistice Day they worked hard, morning or afternoon, in- spired by the leadership of their coaching staff and co-captains, going through calis- thenics, running down under punts, forward passing, live-blocking and tackling, learn- ing plays, running signals, and scrimmag- ing. They realized that it was a man-sized job they faced and it wasn't a game that girls could play. Faced with a real major league schedule which included such opposition as Man- chester Central, Bishop Bradley, Water- town, Nashua, and other traditional op- ponents, the Keene High gridsters proved themselves to be healthy, rugged, sincere, and dependable. They gained the respect of all opponents. Spirit was never lacking despite many defeats, Co-Captains Legere and Curtis, along with seniors Iohn Wright, Bruce Mer- rill, Bernard Streeter, Dave Eno, Chubby Zecha, Mickey Lambert, Zing Punt, and Gerry Goslant, and others, have all con- tributed to a season that will be a memor- able one. Most of these boys, veterans since their freshman days, will be greatly missed when next season rolls around. Coach Gus Hanley spoke to the boys several times about the spirit of the team and it suddenly caught on in the Bradley game, never to be lost tor the rest of the season. At the conclusion of the season, Lyman Curtis was awarded the coveted Sharby Trophy with the Boosters' Club Trophy go- ing to Ray Egan. Row I: Eno, Gallup, Goslant, Curtis, Legere, Bradley, Bardis. GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL The girls' varsity basketball team con- sisted ol all sophomores and juniors this year. The sophomore forwards were Carole Lower and Nancy l-lildreth, and the junior forwards were Barbara Lewis, Nancy Wheelock, Lucille Willson, and Helen Tet- reault. Sophomores Pat Campbell, Shelby Randow, Emily LeClair, and Elaine Rear- don, and juniors Nancy Bouffard, Shirley Croft, Deborah Putney, and Carolyn Gilbo were guards. At the time ot this writing the varsity has won two games and lost three. They beat Gardner twice and lost to Greenfield, Bel- lows Falls, and Walpole. They have two more games to play. The I. V.'s have won three, lost one, and tied one. They conquered Gardner twice, Bellows Falls once, lost to Peterboro, and tied a game with Greenfield. Most of the games were quite close and very thrilling, both teams taking the lead many times. Miss McCaughy and Miss Drugg once again coached the varsity and I, V. teams respectively. VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY The cloud of dust seen behind Keene High last fall was merely a sign that the girls on the field hockey team were hard at work. A lot of positions were won by girls who moved up from last year's I. V. team. As always, Miss McCaughy's high spirit and excellent coaching kept the team work- ing harder than ever. The girls selected a different captain for each game. The varsity played Putney, Stevens, Greenfield, and Gardner, winning two, los- ing two and tying four games. The I. V.'s won three, lost one, and tied two, playing the same teams except Putney. Seniors Ioyce Croteau and Dianne Wilcox played in the forward line with juniors Margie lngalls, Carolyn Thrasher, Nancy Bouffard, Sally Duguay, and Nancy Burrill. Halfbacks were Barbara Lewis, Nancy Par- ker, Carole Lower, and Helen Tetreaultg fullbacks, Deborah Putney and Linda Par- ker, and goalie, Mary Lewis. Nancy Burrill was high scorer with five goals. VARSITY BASKETBALL The varsity basketball team ot l952f53 was a squad ot twelve boys, ot whom only two were veterans. Bob Baker, a 6' 4 center, was back, as was Don Stone, an all state guard as a junior. Their opening game against Brattleboro, which the Blackbirds won, saw Bob Baker sprain an ankle which was to keep him out for an indefinite time. When Baker did return, Don Stone had a seige ot illness, which was to plague him the rest ot the season. The Blackbirds were never really at full strength, yet they played brilliant ball all year long. They finished their regular season with a l3 won 7 lost mark and went to the State Tournament. For the twentieth time in the history ot the school, Keene failed to win, but they gave it everything they had. One consolation was the selection of Captain George Hamilton for the All Tournament Team. Our hats are off to them. They did a magnificent job. Never before has the gym or Alumni Field rung with such cheering. The teams who were playing felt it, too, and as one of the fellows said, lt was really great. lean Ann Govangeli and Bea Leger were co-captains ,and their sparkling leadership along with Miss Murphys expert coaching made the girls really click. During football season the squad cheered as a whole, but for basketball they divided into two groups, sharing the games. Iean Ann's squad con- sisted of Helen and Evelyn Robinson, Alli- son Osborn, and Pat Campbell. Cheering with Bea were Iane Martin, Carolyn Thrasher, Marlene Miinch, and Dolly Stal- bird.
