During the April vacation, the group went on a concert tour of eight days. Concerts were presented in New London, Connecticut: Tren- ton, New Jersey: Reading, Pennsylvania: Schenectady, New York and at Wash- ington, D. C, Three days of sight seeing were enjoyed at our Nation's Capitol. Visits were made to Mt. Vernon, the Bureau of Engraving, the Capitol, Smith- sonian lnstitute and many other places of interest. The choir was housed at the Houston lrlotel, right in the center of the city, and three happy days were enjoyed by all. Four concerts were presented in Keene, one of which was the Faure i'Requiem with the Middleboro, Massachusetts, A Cappella Choir as guests. This replaced the Debating Club, which was formerly in existence in K. H. S. For debate this year the team had the proposition: 'AResolved, that the President should be elected by direct vote of the people. The team began the season with the Speech Tourament at Durham, Janu- ary ZO. Following this, they traveled to Laconia to take part in a practice debate. This prepared Keene for the Bates League in which Keene High's affirmative team met the Manchester Central negative team here, while the negative team went to Concord. In the group there were but two veterans, Win Shea and Bruce Meacham. To encourage more students to enter debating, an intramural program was devel- oped. lduiser Miss Axmr McQLsHixo S mm1RoLL Farrar Shea Vliss McCushing Hanrahan than Nleeham absent when taken P Q0 First Row: Meacham. The engineers make possible the entertaining movies shown through- out the year during lunch periods. The club itself is a volunteer organization operating for the benefit of the school. The console is beneficial to the members of the Audio-Visual Club in that it gives the announcers and the engineers exper- ience in radio operation. The motion picture operators gain much knowledge in the functioning of various projectors and apparatus used in the school. Originally, the club consisted of just motion picture operators: however, the installation of the console called for the addition of more members. They gain the advantage of becoming much better acquainted with the library than it would be possible to be otherwise. It is our purpose to keep the club activities within the range of the Held of literature, so that it shall be essentially a book club, It is expected that the programs offered in the meetings will be supplied both from talent within the club and from outside. Q ' CAREER DAY March I0 1950 was a unique day rn the life of Keene Hugh School rn that the first Career Day ever held here was presented The purposes of this memorable guidance project were 1 To provide the students with data regardrng various vocations so that they mxght be able to make an intelligent selectnon of a calling To enable the students to compare var1ous occupations m cases of doubt so that they might select the one best suited to their xndrvldual mterests aptrtudes and desires To give the students the opportunity of meetmg leaders rn a number of YOCAIIOUS from whom they might obtam msplratlon and counsel The career conferences were especrally successful rn the last goal as the stud ents had a chance to hear and dxscuss their careers with nearly sixty dlfferent speakers representing over fifty vocations One of the highlights of the day was the specxal assembly program nn which the keynote speaker Dr J Wendell Yeo of Boston University gave an nnsprr mg and enlrghtenmg address on the importance and significance of the careful selection of a career l-le was enthusrastlcally recerved by the student body Following Dr Yeo s keynote address the students attended the conference sessions which were conducted along mformal lmes The speakers who outlrned the requirements and opportumtles 1n this partrcular vocation were selected from all walks of llfe lt IS mterestmg to note that the experrence was a new one for many of them who had never spoken to an audience before Most of the guest speakers had put a great deal of effort and plannlng 1nto therr talks In some cases the speaker drstrlbuted pamphlets and other mformatrve materral to mterested students A number of the speakers used personal experiences and anecdotes as examples of l1fe rn their career A questlon and answer period followed these talks under the drrectxon of ever mformtron or guidance the students felt they strll needed After they had compared the work described rn two conferences many puplls who thought they were mterested rn certam fields found that some other work appealed more A great many on the other hand found that the guldance and information gath ered on the1r chosen career served to rncrease their interest and strengthen thelr decision to follow that lrne of work Career Day may well have beeen an import ant mllestone rn the lrves of many students For some rt may have meant the definite chooslng of a lrfe work One student later wrote That was the day on whlch l reallzed what I really wanted to do Career Day especially the conferences required a great deal of plannrng before the actual carrymg out of the program Much thought and work was done by the faculty especially by Mlss Cooke the orngrnator and charrman of the career conferences The first step was the prmtmg of the comprehensrve lrsts of possible careers open to modern youth These l1sts were drstrrbuted to the stud ent body with the request that they check two vocations rn whrch they were mterested These preliminary chorces were tabulated the lrst narrowed down and another lrst printed and distributed to the students When final declsrons were made and alternate cholces hsted the speakers were then contacted and student chairmen appointed for the varrous conferences The time and effort spent in planning were well rewarded Everyone mcludrng students and speakers was convmced that th1s Career Day was a tremendous success By hearing the xdeas and valuable information dxssemmated by people who actually work at these occupations the students were given an opportunrty to profit by someone else s experience and the Informa non given at the varrous conferences proved to be an entirely different way of presenting nt A great many students expressed the opinion that the success of thns year s Career Day merits its repetrtxon as an annual project It IS highly probable that these conferences will become a permanent part of life m Keene High School lll 1 X . . . . . 2 , . . . 3 i . . . . the student chairmen. Vv'hen the first meeting was called, a large number of boys turned out. It was apparent that the boys wanted a club. XVith the aid of the Keene Rifle Club. which acts as adviser, the club meets every XVednesday evening at the North Swanzey range. The club is affiliated with the National Rifle Association. This means that rifles. ammunition and targets will be issued. The organization has not had any meets. but each Wednesday evening the boys have regular practice and it is hoped that before school is over a meet with another school can be secured. They had wonderful seasons in both basketball and field hockey. The Junior Varsity basketball team lost only one game out of a schedule like the Varsity's. By one point they lost a heart-breaker to Bellows Falls. Due to difficulties there was no return game. Who knows what might have happened? Team captains were Jane Martin and Barbara Aldrich. The Held hockey team held its own and showed plenty of spirit all through their season. They lost to Greenfield l-0 and later tied them 0-0. After defeat- ing and tying Gardner they trounced Newport. The captains were Sally Rudolf, and Lorraine Trombley. Coach Miss DRUM first Rott Kenney Dyshleiich Tromblcy Coach Drugg Rudolph B Aldrich Holbrook Strond Rou. This was dealt out by Vermont Academy in the last game of the season. The Junior Varsity Basketball Team, not to be entirely out done, rolled up a fairly impressive record of ll Wins and 8 losses. Although too much isn't known of the Junior Varsity Baseball team, we expect Coach Hanna's charges. at the end of the season, to have left behind them a fairly good record. 125 SKI TEAM 'flivwv -4h.a.,4 Oh h lranklin Castor Joslin XVernnnger Holbrook Cooper Burrill Dusty I c mascot Captain Francis Burrill Coach Ray Franklin The ski team formed last year now has a new coach Mr. Ray Franklin. The first meet of the season was with Brattleboro Vermont. The slalom and cross-country diyisions were held here and the jumping and down hill com- petition took place at Brattleboro. Although the team came through with a Hrst placing in slalom and cross country they lost the meet by tvyo points. The team participated in the Nev Hampshire state meet at Sunapee vshere they competed vyith eight other Class P schools of New Hampshire. Unfortu- nately they' placed last in that meet: this brings them down from Class A to Class B. 126 X, ' JWQ1 HC? 1 fb 'CAA iff Rm Sig' , J ff? '- Wflmeo 57 w ' ff 5 h : :' A MR. Syxwxws MR.
