We Will be proud, then, if this last endeavor should be successful and be accepted with friendly interest. The year 1946 also marks an innovation in the customs of Keene High School: namely, the seal, which is the device used on the cover of this book. This seal, the original coat-of-arms of Sir Benjamin Keene, is also to be placed on class rings, and on the rings of every graduating class hereafter, We wish also to extend our sincerest thanks to all those who have helped to make this book a success: Mrs. Randall, our Salmagfundz' adviser, Mr. Prentiss and Mr. Coflin of the Sentinel, Mr. Percy Hudson, Mr. Stebbins, and our advertisers. Zin emuriam CHANDLER PIERRE August 29, 1928 December 6, 1942 We always Will remember Chan, the little guy with the big smile, the quips and jokes. Our brave class- mate lost his life in the irst year of high school try- ing to save his dog. He would have been a great addi- tion to our class in every Way, but it was not to be. We are proud of Chan because he died nobly as he had lived noblyf 5235221522 U Q . 1 h ' 1 .,,. ' 2 . f.W,1,.Q:.,f-'fl -- giismfk . a'f'if1Lei1f, mg fp DEDICATION 0F A, G. DECEMBER Dear Diary - - - The Dramatic Club production 'AThe Spider was tonight. lt looks as if we sophomores have some actors in our midst. David Bachelor, who played the magician, and Joseph Hanrahan, who played the Chinese boy, were proof of that. Fritz Richter, the Paderewski of Keene High, thrilled the audi- ence with his piano solos. JANUARY Dear Diary - - What a basketball game we saw tonightl We've some pretty enterprising sophomores on the Jay Vee team, this season: Steve Pappas, Jim Yannekis, George Starvou, Bob Aliber, and James Barnes. Good work, Boys! FEBRUARY Dear Diary H - Our class president, Dick Wilmot, a World War Il veteran, became a senior as a result of examinations. Martha Huntley is now president of our class and Jim Yannekis is Vice-President. MARCH Dear Diary - - We went to the Club '48 tonight. The entertainment was outstanding. A magician, Alan Roberts, mystified us all with his sleight of hand. Norma Morissette and Arthur Bouffard tap-danced. Ernie Betts and Allan Kendall entertained us with trumpet and piano music. Refreshments com- pleted the pleasures of the evening. OFFICERS AND ADVISERS President ..... ..,. D ouglas Treat X'iee-President y . Ann Almquist Secretary . . XVinnie Sharby Treasurer . The eighteen members, rep- resenting the four classes, were selected on the basis of forwardness in their classes, through both scholastic standing and qualities of leadership. Commencing in Oc- tober, the members attended meetings of the Keene Rotary Club, two members visiting each month. Through these visitations to one of Keene's foremost organ- izations, these young men of Keene High School have obtained a sizeable idea of how the backbone of our city functions. Aside from the priceless experience of viewing Rotary work itself, the students enjoyed the gift of a good meal each week, plus the most precious gift of all - - - friendship with the many business men of Keene, O c t o b e r November December J a n u a ry February - - - Nelson Guild Allan Kendall Kenneth Carle Richard Farina Leonard Beard John Ziefle Reno Putnam Neal Slocum Frank Blackington Edward Watkins March April--- May--- June Richard Barnes Robert Dederick Roger Bloom Barrett Waling XValter Ballou Aubrey Barrett Leon Loos Fritz Richter SUMMER SCHOOL We were the brave, the courageous, who toiled over our books, all summer long, scraping the surface of knowledge. We intended to graduate at mid years, but due to the changed condition of world affairs most of us are now going through to the end of school in June. As usual there were a number of people who laughed and jeered at us for wasting a whole summer vacation on school, but now the tables have turned, and they look in envy as we walk about the halls, never burdened by more than two or three books. There are also a few of us who manage to go home at recess, leaving the others behind to toil through two more periods. We wish to thank Mrs. Randall, Mr, Stearns, Mr. Richmond, Miss Ray- mond, and Miss Tracy, who devoted their time to make summer school a thor- oughly fine experience, and one that we will not forget for years to come. Other units were on breakfasts, luncheons, suppers, dinners, and lunch boxes, Even if a cake or two did fall, cooking proves to be an extremely fascinat- ing study. CAFETERIA GROUP Adviser , . Miss BRADBURY At your own risk! This is the cafeteria by-word. The cafeteria seems to be one of the most popular places in K, H. S. The food sold there by student work- ers is prepared by Mrs. Greene with the assistance of other students who work during study periods, This year the cafeteria lost Mrs. Gates but gained the val- uable services of Mrs. Greene, Mrs. Corkery, and Mrs. Barron. Mrs. Boyce pre- pares the lunches for the faculty. Under the supervision of Miss Bradbury, the cafeteria serves the hungry populace of K. H. S. throughout the year. SENIOR MACHINE Adviser ........ MR. FORREST HALL Due to the war the demand for machinists has increased to a new high. Witli this in mind the seniors, as they leave Keene High School, have a bright future ahead. The army has outlined a course in Advanced Machine Shop, and a great many seniors are taking this subject in place of senior drawing. This course pre- pares the students for a chance to better themselves if they are inducted into the armed services. During the HFSI part of the year the seniors were invited to the New England Screw Shop and were conducted through the factory. Soon after the Christmas vacation Mr. Robert Gilman, who is attending the Keene Teach- ers College, started in helping out in the machine shop and has given Mr. Hall excellent assistance. The graduating class has received another invitation to be the guests of the New England Screw Company, and the trip is planned early in the summer. A movie was shown early in the year through the courtesy of the South Bent Lathe Company on the operation of a lathe. SHOP KEENE I-IIGI-I SCHOOL BAND Director ...., MR. CHAR1.I2s A. XVOODBURY The band has been fortunate enough to travel this year, for the first time since Pearl Harbor. As usual we attended the home football games, and the an- nual Brattleboro game in Brattleboro. Concert season got under way with our bands traveling to New London on March l5, l946, for a joint band concert with that of the high school in New London. The band also attended the New Hampshire festival in Newport, N. H., on May 4. A joint concert with Middle- boro High, of Middleboro, Mass. was held on May lO, in Keene. As usual the band played on Nlemorial Day in surrounding towns. Superior members were selected for the all state band and orchestra in Nashua. ORCHESTRA Diret'ror . . Cnaiztris A. Woontsum' Keene High School is proud to have one of the few orchestras in the high schools of our state, The development of the band with its uniforms, parades, and showmanship has, in many cases, discouraged the study of the string instru- ments. It is generally accepted that the orchestra is the finest medium of musical expression, and although our orchestra is not as large as the choir or band it is quite well balanced and proficient. lts major activity is to play for dramatic productions and assemblies. Witli .1 lull complement of wood-wind, brass and percussion instruments, in addition to the sixteen strings, it presents a pleasing and satisfying impression upon the listener. Some of our more outstanding members were selected to play in the All- State orchestra at Nashua, April l l- l Z and the New England Orchestra at New Britain, Connecticut, on March 2024. Judged on the basis of age of the mem- bers and their preparation, especially among the string section, We repet1t4'iWe are proud to have one of the few high school orchestras in the state. A CAPPELLA CHOIR Ijuetcfur- . . QHAR1.Ps A. XVooientAt1i1i' The a cappella choir has again cast itself into the category of best in New lgngland, as the restrictions of war-time transportation have been lifted, thereby permitting the choir to make its ninth season one of its most successful ones. Commencing its festivities by holding the annual carolfsing in the school corridors, the choir's season consisted of the yearly Christmas concert in Keene on December lo, a concert at Nliddleboro, Mass., and the New England festival at New Britain, Conn., in March, at which a group of over 300 voices sang: the New Hampshire festival at Nashua in April: the New England audition festival at Gloucester, Mass., in May, for which the choir gave a special concert: the New Hampshire audition festival at Newport, in which the choir joined with the Dartmouth college band for a concert in May. As usual, the choir participated in the annual baccalaureate and commencement exercises. As a result of the l946 graduation, the choir suffers the loss of many seniors who have greatly aided in making our organization one of the best known in New England. CHARLES BLANCHARD Keene 1-ligh's Gridsters of 1945 were neither brilliant or sloppy: they were just a fair-to-midd1in club. Dover, conqueror of Manchester Central, Was defeated in the first game of the season, A strong St. Bernard's Club of Fitchburg Was next taken into camp. Stevens, state Class B Champions, were twice victors over our club, but the sec- ond game was in doubt right up to the final second of play. Although hampered by injuries the Orange and Black closed the season in a , blaze of glory by coming from behind to Win the feature game of the year at Brattleboro. RICHARD MCLEOD Manager . . BRUCE KIBBEE Keene High started its basketball season early, and after the opening game usually played two games a week right up to the finish. Keene managed to squeeze into the last spot for tournament selection, but lost the preliminary to a very strong Nashua team, which went on to win the tournament. The only veteran returning to the club this year was Barrett, and Coach Wyinan had to build his Varsity from inexperienced players. The regular line-up was Reynolds and Martineau, forwards: Watkins, cen- terg and McLeod and Bardis, guards. Five of the regular starters have graduated and Chan Goodnow, who was being counted on as first string catcher, has gone into the service. Coach does have a fairly good looking outfield and the pitching doesn't shape up too bad. Here is the way the team shaped up as we went to press. The only returning infield regular is third sacker, Allan Kendall. All the rest of the infield positions are wide open for competition. Dick McLeod, an outfield regular last year, could be brought in to play first base if the situation called for it. The outfield is the strong point of the year's club with Paul CRedJ Chamberlain, and the aforementioned McLeod patrolling its outer reaches. Dick Barnes should head the pitching staff, and DiJulio should squeeze in there some- where too. With Goodnow gone, the catching staff is pretty weak and so far looks to be the weak spot of the club, although Chamberlain could switch in from the outfield without much trouble. K. H. S. JAY-VEES J. V. Football Coach . . MR. WYNIAN J. V. Basketball Coach ..,.. MR. MULVANEY It seems that every year the varsity clubs have a poor season, the Jay Vees come up with their best teams. J. V. Football was the best in many a year. They were able to play a full schedule, Whereas in the previous years they were able to play only one or two games because of transportation difficulties. Coach Wyman led his gridsters to an undefeated season. They won all of their six starts in fine style, and the only serious competition offered them was from Vermont Academy. In basketball the Jay Vees were practically as good. They lost very few games and for a while they were undefeated. They were one of the big reasons why there were so many fans at the basketball games this winter. Their best fea- ture was the fact that they had two equally good teams, and the rivalry between these two teams became so hot that during one of the off games on their schedule they played a preliminary game with the Varsity. The system tried this year will probably be continued. Any freshman girl may try out before a com- mittee composed of freshman teachers. This committee selects a group which has a try-out before the class: then votes are cast for two candidates. A cheer- leader continues from year to year if she proves satisfactory. Cheerleaders do not receive their letters until they are seniors. This year the cheerleaders Were fortunate enough to get to a few of the out- offtown games. The bus didn't comef Since only three of the team are graduating, the prospects for next year look pretty good. In our first game We actually did not score one basket from the floor. PHYSICAL EDUCATION This year's program of Physical Education Was supervised by Mr. Sumner .loyce until the 4th of March. at which time Mr. Hatch, released from active duty in the Navy, resumed his former position. The activities participated in by the junior and senior boys have been both rugged and extensive, including calisthen- ics and a broad program of sports. Physical Education, a wartime baby at Keene High, is scheduled to put on long pants next year if present plans materialize. Started as an emergency meas- ure With classes required for junior and senior boys, next year's program will find Physical Education a required subject for all freshman and sophomore boys instead of the upper classmen.
