Hours of planning and preparation have been put into it, but the members of the Salmagundi Board will feel their job well done if you enjoy the con- tents. We sincerely hope you will keep it as'a reminder of the days which in a few short years will be but just a memory and that it will serve to sharpen and bring back those memories of your teen age era. We also wish to express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Randall, John Coffin, Percy Hudson and all others who have helped to bring this book to a iinish. SALMAGUNDI BOARD Editor . . . . . We who are leaving feel sincere regrets that we will no longer be able to enjoy his wonderful sense of humor and his grand personality. I-I EA DMASTE R HARCLD A. RICE t Virginia A. ELWIN DAMQN e No one knows better than we students the great loss Keene High School has suffered in the death of Mr. Damon, for twenty-six years a teacher of chemistry in our school. A kind and understanding friend to all, he was more than just a teacher. In his classroom he prepared young people for the world, and shared with them his knowledge gained through a lifetime of service. Welwill miss him, but his memory will always be with us. They have worked and labored to' prepare the copy and ideas for this book. They have enjoyed the work and it has meant many hours of planning and of work. The paper shortage and other war time conditions have made the Salmagundi increase its prices. but it hopes that you will find it worth the price. All in all the members feel that they have got much out of being allovved to compile the 1945 Salmagundi. n SALMAGUNDI BUSINESS BOARD Faced with the problem of ad collecting,-one of the least desired jobs on the Salmagundi,-the members of the Business Board, spending afternoons on this Work, sometimes wish the ad had never been invented, but under the capable direction of Len Farina they have brought home the bacon. With a sigh of relief, they now request that you at least glance at the ads, a monument to many hours of weary traveling. You see, Mrs. Chase is the hospital doll and the thirty-six girls who completed the course have learned a great deal by taking care of her. Mrs. Reynolds instructed the girls part of the time. The course emphasizes four things: health. security, self-expression, and congenial companionship. , A OFFICE PRACTICE Adviser . . MR. CLIFFORD PERKINS There are two groups of Oiiice Practice girls. The first group are training to be clerical workers, while the other group are training to be stenographers. The main object of the Office Practice group is to learn the fundamentals of oiice work. To gain experience, each girl spends one period a day in either Dr..Rice's or Mr. Thompson's ofiice. An additional period each day is spent with Mr. Perkins typing and mimeographing the notices, programs, tests, and any other material that grade schools, clubs, or teachers send in. It is also the Oflice Prac- tice girls Who type, mimeograph, and put together the Informer. MECHANIC ARTS GROUP Instructor . . MR. WOODBURY Despite restrictions of travel, the band has had a busy and interesting year. As usual, it played at all of the home football games and participated in a number of parades and public meetings. The five twirlers have worked out snappy new routines this year that made a big hit. ' The season was high-lighted by a combined concert with the Bulkley High School band from New London, Connecticut. The group numbered over one hundred players, sixty of whom were from Keene. The concert. directed by both Mr. Pierce from New London and Mr. Woodbury, was a smash hit attended by a capacity audience. The band is looking forward to a return concert in New London as soon as transportation permits. J KEENE I-IIGI-I ORCHESTRA Director '. . . . MR. WOODBURY Concert Master . . RICHARDAIKEN Although there are few opportunities for public appearances, the forty mem- bers of the orchestra get a great deal of enjoyment plus experience from playing for most school assemblies and for Dramatic Club productions. The New Hamp- shire and New England Musical Festivals, which were looked forward to by the members, have been cancelled for the present. However, it is hoped they can be held again by another year. A CAPPELLA CHOIR Director . . MR. WOODBURY Each year we grow prouder cf our A cappella choir as they go unohtrusively about gathering new honors for themselves. This year they impressed audiences at East Jaffrey, Portsmouth, and Plymouth, Massachusetts, and at their spring - concert in our own auditorium. a One of the loveliest things about Christmas Vacation time is having the choir stroll through the corridors singing carols on the last day of school. 'It just lends the right touch to all our Christmas spirits. I I ATHLETICS VARSITY FCJOTBALL Captain . . . TOM GORMAN Coach l. . ARTHUR MULVANEY Manager ........ ROY CARROLL The Salmagundi is proud to have the New Hampshire state champs appear on this page. Compiling one of the best records in the school's history. they can well claim that they are one of the strongest teams the Orange and the Black will ever see. With the entire line back and two backiield starters, all that remained was to finally select Betts and Barnes as the other two backfield men. Rolling over all opposition, the team had many All-State candidates with Cobb and Gorman making twoand Wyman being made captain of the Sportwriters' All-State. One of the remarkable things about this team was the ability of the second stringers, most of whom were good enough to play first string on any other team in the state. Coupled with this was the lack of the necessity of having one star to make the points and so operating like a machine they rolled up the following record: A Keene 27 St. Bernards 0 12 Vermont Academy 0 4 26 Mount Hermon 6 20 Stevens 2 22 Bellows Falls 0 75 St. Joseph 0 46 Brattleboro 0 VARSITY BASKETBALL Captain . . PAUL WYMAN Coach . . GILBERT WYMAN Manager ........ LEWIS KIBBEE With a record of 1 l-4 in regular season play and a victory and a defeat at the New Hampshire Tournament the Keene quintet concluded its schedule with a post season game with a loss to the Red and White of Concord. Starting with two veterans, Wyman and Chakalas, Coach Wyman filled in the other positions with Robbins and Yannekis at guards and Cmrandin alternating at center and forward with Wyman. Borden and Barrett saw suflicient action to merit the varsity K also. The reserves CGorman, Cwoodnow, Bardis, and McLeodD showed much ability but were unable to see enough action to suit them. The home season was very successful with 8 victories and no defeats, the outstanding ones being the conquering of Portsmouth and the state champs, Manchester Cen- tral. Tournament hopes were high, but with the loss of Wyman we had to be content with reaching the semi-finals, and although leading 19-16 at half time, lost to the smooth moving Central five. The cause for applause at the tourna- ment was the selection of Lindy Chakalas, as captain of the all tournament team. Although the team was organized rather late in the season. a fairly good schedule of games was arranged. As usual, the games with Peterborough were the ones which the girls really wanted to win. However, after winning the home game, the Keene team met with defeat on the Peterbor- ough court. The team consisted of six seniors and one junior. Filling the guardspots were Jeannette Whitehouse, Regina Johnson, and Ruth Nolin. At forward positions were June Pratt, Marion Davis, Rosalie Lombard, and Charlotte Dean. SUMNER JOYCE That howling that poured from the gym all winter long, seven periods a day, was one of Mr. Sumner Joyce's gym classes. In the fall it is calisthenics and football, the tag variety. In the winter it is a more severe course of calisthenics and basketball. and when the spring rolls around, the victims are out behind the school engaging in a rugged game of softball, but only after fthe body buildingj calisthenics. But it is in the winter that the boys have the most fun. They rush down to the gym and rummage through the many lockers for an outfit that its them and then they hurriedly slip into the clean dry gear. When the last one is dressed, he is warmed up by calisthenics and then the basketball game. Mr. Joyce is the referee and his decisions are usually questioned. So when the period is over, the battered and bleeding welcome the cold showers, and then the rest of the day is spent resting up. But outside of the cold gym, the cold showers, the insecurity of the lockers, Mr. Joyce's gym classes have a good time. I I .
