Her family then moved to Upland, California in 1929. Miss Hutchinson finished her secondary schooling at Chaffey Union High School in Ontario, California. She then attended and graduated from Chaffee Junior College and continued at San Diego State. After finishing at San Diego State, she went to Scripps and Pomona for a further year : or of study. She later received her Masters degree Ss ‘ from Pomona. At the age of six, Miss Hutchinson began studying piano. By the time she was twelve she played in the school orchestra and was the unofficial pianist for all civic functions. While attending Chaffey High and Chaffey Junior Col- | lege, she studied pipe organ From the first year Miss Hutchinson began teaching, she has pursued her dream of traveling. Her first adven- ture was taking a Cook’s tour of Europe on a ‘‘shoe-string budget.’’ During the years since her first trip, she has visited nearly all the countries of the world as well as traveling extensively over the United States. Miss Hutchinson has often combined work with pleasure by taking courses at various universities such as the University of Mexico at Mexico City, University of Guatemala, San Marcus in Lima Peru, Whittier College, Univer- sity of Hawaii, and University of California. A couple of years ago Miss Hutchinson put a “‘string around the package’’ with a round-the-world trip, revisit- ing many places and seeing some new ones. Greece, for instance, she liked so much that she returned a year ago to spend most of her summer vacation there. Miss Hutchinson has become a part of Kearny through working with the students personally and through classroom work. She has been an English teacher here in San Diego for 25 years, and has helped many students obtain an education after graduation with scholarships. Miss Hutchinson has also contributed much of her time to American Field Service for 5 years, making it possible for Kearny to send three students abroad, and to bring three foreign students here. So it is to you, Miss Viletta Hutchinson, that we dedicate with pride the ‘65 KOMET! Mr. Gus Lundmark, boys’ vice-principal, had the difficult task of supervising many student body func- tions. He was responsible for boys’ discipline, regis- tration, enrollment and faculty assignments. His devoted time and effort proved beneficial to Kearny students. Administration Mr. Cleon Davies, Kearny’s outstanding principal, did a tremendous job in establishing and maintaining our fine citizenship and academic standings which have always been consistent in the Kearny tradition. His friendly, very cooperative disposition and his ability and enthusiasm for working with people was well reflected throughout the Kearny High campus. Administrative Conference Kearny’s girls’ vice principal, Mrs. Karen Wiseman, has been a valuable asset to our school. Her honest and sincere devotion to better school activi- ties has been very much appreciated. The skill with which she handles her job is essential to the functions of Kearny High School. “@SGGh8 044594 Pad ikl dd Mr. Bazel Nelson, assistant principal is one of Kearny’s newest administra- tors. Mr. Nelson has been at Kearny for two years and has done much to im- prove relations between students and administration. His fine achievements have made him instrumental to the Kearny way of life. Doctor Masten, Head Counselor and test co-ordinator, played an important role here at Kearny. He supervised the National Merit and P.S.A.T. tests and gave much of his time to helping stu- dents prepare for their college educa- tion. Because of his sincerity he has re- ceived the respect of the student body and faculty of Kearny. FRANK MASTEN re Kearny High School was very fortunate this year to have one of the most harmonious staffs in the school system. Their dedication to teaching was demonstrated throughout the year as they endea- vored to give the students all of their knowledge and philosophies. Despite their fatigue and frustrations, they managed to create a well disciplined and happy atmosphere in the classroom as well as on the campus. They not only inspired the students’ talents but in many cases guided students in social activities. Their achievements were the achievements of the students, and their success with edu- cation was mirrored in the attitudes, honors, and awards bestowed upon this year’s graduating class. a e 5 os seni F 4 4 : 3 Mr. Carlton Garris MreavienNiena Mr. Leroy Smith Department Head Mr. Henry Wiegarid Business Mrs. Marilyn Brantley Mrs. Frances Burney Mr. David Cockrum rn . as eS Mr. James Henderson Mr. Richard Brown Mrs. Jean Malcolm Mr. Thomas Franklin Mr. David Hitchings is Mrs. Elizabeth Dresser Department Head Mr. John Hayes Mr. Robert Hotchkiss Mr. Robert Reed Department Head Mrs. Kathleen Smith Miss Viletta Hutchinson Mrs. Harriet Marriner Mrs. Lona Mae Ross Mr. George Dangel Mrs. Elizabeth Robertson Mrs. Carole Salcido English Miss Erlene Speck Mr. Dalton Vivian Mr. Michael Peshel Mrs. Simone Ostrander Department Head Speech | and . | Drama Mr. Jack Winans | Mr. Max Bergstrom Mr. John Carter | Mr. James Slivkoff Mr. George Welch | | Math Mr. William Harter Department Head nl a Language Mr. Glenn Merrill Mr. Kurt Clancy Mr. Gilbert Guzman Mr. Sal Gumina Miss Anna Terkelsen Department Head Science eas so ee sa wl shan Mr. Daniel Rufolo Mr. Edmund Sorman Department Head Mr. Robert Wilson Mr. John Woodruff Mr. Carl Christensen i nee Mr. Bruce Graves Mr. James Post Mr. Raymond Watson Mr. Len Kamp Mr. Clarence Pyke Department Head Mr. Glenn Wonderly Mr. Lee Bogle Mr. Richard Coolidge Mr. Charles Gawle Mrs. Betty Hall Mr. Maynard Albertson Mr. Lyle Annable Mr. Paul Deacon Mr. Carl Fleming Department Head Social Studies OO” aa = Mr. John Kloska Mr. Francis Kravcik Mr. Albert Janc GS Mr. William Newman Homemaking . — ——— | Mrs. Evelyn Hinshaw Department Head Mr. Berval Poulin nit iiuaannia Mrs. Jean Raborg wi Ty Mr. Kenneth Hantze Driver's Training TT 7} J | rv 7 Wy Mr. Fred Bates Mr. Neil Krause Mr. Jack Menotti Mr. Charles Perpich Mr. James Poole Mr. Tom Rice | Mr. Doyle Seely Mr. Birt Slater Mr. Jack Taylor Department Head Music Miss Carol Douglas Mr. John McCrea Mrs. Evelyn Khor Mr. Oscar Stollsteimer Miss Carolyn Kutzke rk Mrs. Patricia McGregor Mr. Richard Zaloudek Department Head Miss Margret Ward Department Head Custodians Bill-Redlingene= Gardener | Mr. Luther F. Entertaining at Homecoming. The Marching Band for 1964 has done a wonderful job of entertaining the crowds at half-time and also at the Toyland Parade. This year's Band, under the leadership of Pam Eagan, not only gave us their usual display of good marching, but they also surprised every- one with a precision drill routine in honor of the 1964 Olympics. The Band’s lively music and intricate routines captivated the specta- tors and added enjoyment to the _ half-time activities. The Band’s performances, as a whole, showed the long hours of hard work that the members and Mr. McCrea have contributed. The Marching Band is an excellent example of Kearny’s well-known school spirit. Marching Band The seventeen liveliest Komets on the Kearny campus belonged to Kearny’s Pep Band. For the ’64-'65 school year, this small but effective band led and helped guide the Kearny Komets at both football and basketball games. They kept the games both interesting and exciting with their renditions of Tiger Rag, Rockin’ Rhythm, and Kearny’s favorite, Swingin’. The Kearny Komets would like to salute the ‘“‘swingingest’’ band in the city school system, Kearny’s Pep Band. AA trophy. Coach Birt Slater was very pleased with that year’s team, but in the back of his mind he must have wondered how we could protect the team’s position with only five returning players next year. Mr. Slater did it. In the fall he made up a squad which was composed mostly of juniors and be- gan the practices which he feared would be rough going. Soon after the practices began his worries had been forgotten. Everyone was working hard and doing their job. Each player worked long hours after school hoping to retain their C.I.F. crown. The steady play of Senior Ken Blattman led the fine group of Juniors and Sophomores. Kearny was undefeated in their first four league matches. The season’s highlight came when Kearny tied Point Loma, the defending C.I.F. Champions. Don Ducan, Joe Hatch, Randy Shuffler, Sid Stayton, Mark Seltzer, David Graham, and Tom Donnell proved to be consistent point getters on this year’s squad. Ken Blattman—Ken, a Senior, was the most outstanding player on this year’s team. The team has few seniors but John Staley and Bob Woods did a fine job in the two mile event. Pete Downes and David Smith were also outstanding in the hurdles and shot put, respectively. Jac Crawford and Robert Marquez in the sprints and Carl Giesser, Joe Miyoshi and David Ensminger in the pole vault. The team should by next year develop into a strong squad with assets like Bobby Johnson, Tom Green, Fred Rojas, Richard Walter, J. R. Givens, Dan Georgi, and Barry Richardson. — 204 Two Milers — Richard Walter, Half Milers — Mike Gero, Bob Marquez, J. R. And these are the things we will carry with us in our minds. Again the twilight of one phase of life welcomes the dawn of another, and though we continue onward, we will still remember what is behind and have faith in what is to come. Closing With the closing of this book comes the closing of another year for the underclassmen. But for the graduating seniors, a way of life is now behind them. The C.I.F.’s, dances, clubs and the Prom are in the past. We of the staff, hope that this book, which is dedicated to the class of '65, will bring back wonder- ful memories in the future.
